mark sayre reports about the town hall meeting for tonight. people are concerned about a possible increase of pressure on the pipe. good morning. >> reporter: that's right. pg&e and state regulators are discussion the possibility that the gas line pressure might need to be increased if we have a cold snap. >> reporter: we'll have details on the town hall meeting in just a moment. first the other development is the issue of pipeline pressure. the potential that the pressure on the pipeline that runs through the area might be increased. at the public utilities commission meeting yesterday both the puc and pg&e said the line pressures may need to be increased if there is a cold snap this winter because the line that exploded and two others are operating at just 80% of capacity under the puc order. if demand increases, it's possible that some customers like hospitals and other commercial customers could lose gas service because they are considered noncore customers. but, of course, the entire concept of increasing the pressure has residents very c

let's go to mark sayre at 26th and santa clara streets. mark, good morning. >> good morning, sydnie. this is a two-alarm fire broke out around 3:00 a.m. here on east santa clara street. we are just to the west of the 101 felipe. let's show you video that we took when we arrived here this morning. this is wendy's party favors and balloons. fire crews called here by 911 a second alarm called. when they arrived, smoke and flames were showing. it took crews an hour to knock it down. this is in a strip mall with 6 adjoining businesses including a printing company which had chemicals and what not that fire crews were concerned about. fire officials say preventing the spread of the fire is one of the top concerns. >> they have active fire so they went in with a quick interior tack, very aggressive. they went in the topside and cut a hole to keep the fire to that area. they kept it confined not to the neighboring unit. >> reporter: that certainly is good news. 30% of the interior party supply store destroyed in the fire. no injuries to any fire cr

let's check in with mark sayre on mt. hamilton one. areas where there is an official warning out today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the national weather service has issued a red flag warning for the east bay hills and diablo range here on mt. hamilton, you can see there is an abundance of brown dry brush. that red flag warning includes all hills above 1,000 feet in alameda, contra costa and santa clara counties. the fire danger isn't just in the mountains. yesterday in vacaville a small brush fire broke out along interstate 505 keeping fire crews busy for the afternoon and the conditions remain ripe for still more fire trouble. >> we have had some precipitation and cooler weather but these north winds bring the fire danger back up. the conditions are dry. the grass is extremely dead. >> reporter: you can hear just how dry this brush is on mt. hamilton. one. other concerns that they have, juliette, the potential for wind. some possible gusts projected up to perhaps 40 miles per hour over some of the ridgetops later on today

reporting live in santa clara, i'm mark sayre, cbs 5. allen. >> mark, thanks. >>> deadly accident this morning in san mateo county to tell you about. it happened just after 7:00 on el camino real in atherton. details still kind of sketchy but this car apparently hit a pedestrian. el camino closed for several hours of course while police investigated. it re-opened about 10:45 this morning. the name of the pedestrian is still not released. >>> also, from san mateo county, a strong smell of gas and loud noise while pg&e crews worked on the natural gas pipeline this morning. crews are purging a gas line in hillsborough south of black mountain road exit on 280. the utility says it's working to improve supply for the peak winter season. pg&e is going to be purging that line again tonight at 8:00 and then again next week on wednesday. it's been more than a month since a pipeline exploded in san mateo county killing 8 people and destroying dozens of homes. that was in san bruno. >>> well, it's a problem that unites law enforcement agency across

mark sayre reports. >> reporter: good afternoon. this morning the caltrain board of directors as expected did approve a fare increase and also service cuts. but the deputy general manager of the agency that manages caltrain also took time to refute reports that caltrain administrators received 14% pay raises. they say the way caltrain is administered to lead people to conclude that's the case because caltrain is administered by the san mateo county transit district. those employees then bill the time that they work on caltrain matters to the caltrain budget. those employees did work more hours. that means they did -- were paid more. the overall administrative costs were up 14% but nobody received any big raises. >> the caltrain employees did not receive individual pay increases totaling 14% between 2007 and 2010. the difference in total wages applied to the caltrain operating budget did increase 14% during the period of which 9% of this amount is the result of additional staff hours being applied to the caltrain operating budget. >>

mark sayre reports. >> reporter: you don't have to drive far in san jose to find roads that are in need of some serious repair work at tully road. it's impossible for vehicles to miss the potholes. this san jose resident says she knows the problem all too well. >> they definitely need fixing. there's a lot of potholes. >> reporter: in san jose's alma neighborhood city work crews were busy repainting crosswalks. this resident was happy to see the work but says the pothole problem in particular needs to be addressed. >> i have already aligned my van three times because of the potholes. my husband has a fit because he runs into them all the time and we just had tires fixed. >> reporter: last month a group reported that san jose has the highest proportion of major roadways in poor condition of any metropolitan area in the nations. san jose city leaders say they are well aware of the problem and they say they will likely need a special parcel tax at some point down the road to pay for all of the needed improvements. drivers say something needs to be done. >> sometimes too bumpy. yeah. >> rep

mark sayre on the evidence against rojas. >> it's a difficult day for our department. it's a difficult day for our profession. >> reporter: he says 36-year- old clay rojas worked in a specialized unit investigating felony crimes. the chief say this investigation began when this man 38-year-old william bettencourt of santa cruz county was arrested in an unrelated case. he is a member of the hells angels. he was in possession of confidential dmv data allegedly obtained by officer rojas. >> during this short two-week investigation, we learned that he had passed along some confidential information that he had accessed through some computers at the police department. >> reporter: the chief says that data would typically contain names, addresses and social security numbers but it is for law enforcement use only. >> we are very clear on what the rules are so when you can access those databases and for what purposes, this was just a clear violation. >> reporter: as for motive? >> that's one of the questions we are looking at. what was his motive? what was his true relationship
