i had the good fortune to start working at the port with monique and noreen ambrose, who was such an expert, and it was through her tutelage and your amazing patience and the patience of your staff that i came to appreciate all of the common law principles that really guide the port in our day-to-day activities. it is really a very rich history of law. i think we are really serving the public in some extremely important ways. i just want to apologize that we are always coming to you seeking special treatment because that seems to be what we do in san francisco. i think you brought to the job a very strong environmental ethic. i know that had to be the case, and i did have a chance to work one of byron's reelection campaigns, and i know what a great guy he is. i know is that reputation and the reputation you have built at the commission, it was really with your concurrence that we were able to get through some of the things monique spoke about. this most recent bill is going to mean so much, so you were firm and fair and always listened to us patiently, regardless of the crazy ideas t

two more items, the last one was put on the agenda by monique. i glanced at it briefly, then i read it and it is quite a remarkable achievement. last sunday was world polio day. last sunday thousands from around the country came to san francisco to mark the rotary 25 year fight to eradicate polio. the events culminated in a dramatic fashion when the ferry building was resounding with the pledge to end polio now. other structures around the world -- around the world carry the same message, including the sydney opera house. earlier that day, thousands of rotarians walked from united to the ferry building to signify this effort they have undertaken. i did not realize this and i am sorry to take your time on this, but it is fascinating. rotary has raised $900 million and is nearing its goal of raising an additional $200 million for the challenge goal in the bill gates foundation. rotary has immunize more than 2 billion children, reducing " the amount of polio cases by 99%. these are just remarkable statistics. on behalf of all of us, i learned a litt

that is due to the leadership of the mayor, jared at the time you were with the city, monique. they deserve the credit. we are proud to partner with them to be able to help provide this funding, but the leadership and commitment and drive to make this happen -- it has been a five-year effort. this has been incredible because i remember when we first started this effort. we put together just shy of $2 million to help move this forward. why do we do this? because diesel emissions represent a major health concern here in the bay area. toxic soot from diesel lodges in our lungs, causes a number of respiratory problems, and oceangoing vessels represent a fraction of that. this is something we have an undertaking in the bay area, to clean of diesel soot from a variety of sources. we put together a comprehensive program we continue to implement to clean up all the trucks in the port of oakland. we are also doing that with regard to the locomotive traffic in the bay area, and this project represents another example of our efforts working with partners in the city and county of san fran

we also appreciate your work on california coast, on the projects that monique mentioned regarding offshore oil development, and as a giants fan, i appreciate if you seeing the way clear to allow us to sit in the cheap seats with the great views of their of san francisco bay, and we wish you the best of luck in the future. thank you very much. monique, what are some of the factors that really place a youth at risk? well i think factors that place the youth at risk for using substances include underlying mental health issues. i think that environmental factors play an important role if they're in a community that is highly supportive of use. maybe at home there's using going on. i think that those are some really big contributing factors. and greg, why should we be concerned in america with all of these issues with youth? well i think the biggest thing is people don't generally realize all the different areas that are impacted by young people using drugs and alcohol, you know. if you look at, you know, in my life, you know, you talk about the hospitalizations, the criminal stuff, all the different areas in my life that were impacted as a result of my alcohol and drug use. so it wasn't just that i was putting myself at risk but i was putting other people at risk and i was causing, you know, impacts in different areas of society. for our audience, give them an idea of how you ran into trouble with

monique, how do i get into if i'm in need of a recovery school? how do i approach the various schools? are they available to everyone all over the united states or is it only in certain pockets? unfortunately, there are recovery high schools in only eight states and collegiate recovery communities in nine states. so i think that speaks right there to how underserved adolescents and young adults are in the area of addiction. however, we are in eight states and we are in nine states and how do you access a recovery high school or collegiate program? well, first you could go to our web site and you can see where the different high schools and colleges are located and it would be as simple as contacting them directly and asking what their enrollment criteria that's going to vary between high schools and college programs. and even individual high schools may have different enrollment criteria. but basically we're looking for students and families that are committed to their education and their recovery, are committed to abstinence from drugs and alcoho
