be the final descent for phoenix two. the mining minister there, just thanking this rescue worker. he must be absolutely shattered. he must be dead on his feet. having been up for the last two days at least. a quick cursory inspection of phoenix two. and now since rattling down that shaft, just being lined up, making sure the wheels are ok. just putting it into position. and beginning its descent for the final time. to pick up the final rescue worker. one of six who's been coordinating such a successful rescue program today. so the lights of phoenix two descending down that shaft. for the first 54 meters, and then going through hard granite. which they couldn't actually reach down to -- they were going to line the whole thing, it could have taken them another week of these men being underground. well, that rescue worker is speaking to the president's wife. the first lady here. and now a cold wait for the last time for phoenix two. to reach the bottom for that last rescue worker. to clambor inside to be pulled all the way

the phoenix capsule, they're working on it. checking the oxygen inside, the communication, the cameras and the lighting inside. the phoenix capsule, one at a time is going to bring those 33 miners back to the surface. there again you see the scene at the the top. let's wander through the timeline just to refresh your memory of how this ordeal has played out. it was on august 5 that the mine collapsed. 2,300 feet under ground, 33 miners trapped. it was august 22, the miners second a note saying they're alive. imagine the stress on the families, the stress on the miners there,'s the president of chile holding that note august 27, into the ordeal. on august 26, the miners send a video message to their families saying they will survive and voicing their determination to survive this ordeal. august 30, the month-long rescue plans begin, they start drilling down plan a, b and c, it is plan b that made it down. on october 9, the drill pierces the roof, where they are, essentially the bunker under ground, the drill pierces the roof on

karl, do you have a sense of how far away the phoenix capsule is? >> reporter: i believe it is -- i believe the capsule is now no more than two, 2 1/2 minutes away, judging by the time that the rescuer took to get down, this capsule is really moving quite fast, it seems to be going quite smoothly. technically speaking, the technicians said it would take longer for the capsule to get down to the mine than it would to extract it from the mine, back to the surface. we now have on this current ascent, florencio avalos stepped into the phoenix capsule eight minutes and 31, 32, 33 seconds ago now. so i would expect to see the phoenix rising to the surface, bringing the first miner back to life in just a minute and a half, maybe two minutes from now. and if you look at this picture behind us, family members, well-wishers, they are just waiting here, this is the moment they've been waiting 69 days for. you can see also at the extraction point, you can see president sebastian pinera and his wife. they have come out, they're standing alongside the extraction

the phoenix tube is-- phoenix two is on its way down there with that engineer. they have a camera feeding them a live picture as it goes down. when he makes it down there, he'll exit, greet the 33, he'll explain to them some of the process. something that they've already had the opportunity to do. because they've had that video link. and then the first of the 33 miners is expected to get in to the capsule and the capsule will come up. the ride to the surface, about 15 minutes. we hear people singing. some of the singing has been the national anthem. some is the cheer which is quite popular for the national soccer team here. there's a sense of jubilation and excitement leading up to what everybody anticipates to be the first of 33 successful rescues. >> kerry, manuel gonzalez, that first rescuer to climb into the capsule and go down and may be just about now arriving at the bottom, will we have an indication when manuel gonzalez has made it to the bottom? >> well, i think the way we're going to know that is we're going to draw the conclusion when we see the winch

every single part of that rescue capsule, the phoenix one and phoenix two, there are two capsules that are going to alternate that are covered with video and audio capability. >> yes. i think that's what they're doing right now. they're sending the camera up and down. it's 2,040 feet. they've been sending the camera up and down because they've been inspecting the walls. the first 187 feet has pieces of half-inch steel pipe that are in lengths of about 20 feet long. they were all soldered together or connected together. the reason they did that is because part of the shaft had loose fractures or rocks that could come loose while capsuling. it appears they may be sending a camera down once again to inspect the shaft. >> reporter: meanwhile the phoenix cap sewer is rile above it, and they're going to wait till they get a clear feed, you would imagine, before they're going to lower the phoenix capsule down. again, without anyone in it the first time, but then it's the real first beginning of the rescue operation which we're not told is going to take place around 10:00 p.m. here. that will

the phoenix capsule itself is 21.5 inches in diameter. so a broad-shouldered miner is going to get in there but only with a little bit of a squeeze. they are going to have to come out in this rescue position and they don't want the miners to feel too constrained. they don't want them to feel too clause sister phobic. so they can talk to the people on the surface so that they don't feel alone. this is the first time that they are literally going to be on their own, fenlding for themselves since the mine caved in on august the 5th. they don't want the miners to get nauseous. so that is why they are taking great pains to make sure that the phoenix capsule doesn't spin and gyrate on its way up the rescue shaft. that's why it has the rubber wheels and there is anti-twist cable and so the miners don't get nauseous. for the last six hours now, they've only had a liquid diet provided by the space agency nasa. vitamins and protein to make sure that they literally don't throw up on the way up. also as well, making sure that the miners don't get diz
