some of san bruno's ruptured line. none of them is in san bruno. the closest ones are in nanz and hollister. after the explosion and fire, state regulators ordered pg&e to inspect its whole network. the utility also says it found about 300 manual gas valves that need to be replaced with faster alternatives with either an automatic or remote- controlled shutoff and that could cost up to $450 million. the manual valves are an issue because after the san bruno pipeline ruptured, workers needed an hour and a half to close the valves manually. of some 300 valves, pg&e is considering upgrading nearly a third of them are in the bay area on the peninsula, south bay and east bay. now, pg&e is expected to finish checking its entire system by december 15. meantime, congresswoman speier has also planned a friday night town hall meeting involving pg&e, the public utilities commission as well as a national transportation safety board. that town hall meeting friday night at 6:30 at saint robert's catholic church in san bruno. there is a closed-door meeting this m

anne makovec is in san bruno reporting the utility had plenty of pipeline problems during that time. good morning to you, anne. >> reporter: good morning. it is the california public utilities commission that regulates all the gas lines in california including here in the san bruno neighborhood. and new concerns this morning after a new report shows the cpuc might not have been doing a very stringent job. there is a panel forming to review the pipeline blast here. but after the explosion on september 9 the "chronicle" began looking into the history of the agency's dealings with pg&e and it reports a hands off approach. it said even though pg&e had even more pipeline infractions than the rest of the state's major pipelines combined over six years, no fines were handed out. meantime, pg&e is putting motorized cameras into the pipeline here in san bruno to inspect it between the blast site and two third of a mile in either direction. planning on showing the pictures to the national transportation safety board which is in charge of the investigation. now, pg&e has not yet decided whether

anne makovec in san bruno to show us what's happening today. anne. >> reporter: yes, nice to have any piece of good news come out of this san bruno neighborhood. here is the blast site behind me. looking quite differently than it did just a few weeks ago. you can see there are still some properties that have yet to be cleared. but by the end of today there will only be about 10 properties left standing. of course, standing is also a relative term because a lot of the properties that do have items on them just have semblances of homes at this point, chimneys, some cars. they are also working very hard on testing the air quality and the soil quality on all of those properties and looking forward to a brand-new neighborhood here in san bruno. and again, we are looking live here at this neighborhood where the people that live on the outskirts have been allowed in. we still see plenty of tags on their houses. we talked to some of those folks today about how it feels to live and here. good weather and a lack of wind have allowed crews to clear 27 of

. >>> pg&e faces a number of lawsuits in the wake of that deadly pipeline fire in san bruno. anne makovec is near the explosion site with more on who is taking legal action. >> reporter: good morning. several of the victims of this explosion, people who used to live here in the san bruno neighborhood, and 25 additional lawsuits on top of the five that have already been filed are expected to be filed against pg&e within the next two weeks. five families filed lawsuits yesterday claiming pg&e knew its pipeline was defective and was putting lives and property in danger. newspaper reports show the company's own documents said portions of line 132 just a few miles from where i'm standing had a, quote, unacceptably high risk of failure. pg&e has not yet responded to those lawsuits. meanwhile, the state's senate heard testimony yesterday from some of the people who lost loved ones in the explosion. they say they are filing these lawsuits and speaking out because they want this to be played out in public so that everyone realizes what happened and pressures the government and pg&e to

bruno. pg&e answered questions for two hours from mayors, jackie speier in a closed-door meeting. they learned that because the pipes are all of different diameters there is no easy way to evaluate them. they would have to go with pressure testing, taking large segment of pipeline out of service for long periods, a second concern there are inconsistent results on a stretch of pipe north of the san bruno runture . the mayors' third concern, pg&e's apparent contention that the age of the pipes is not a major factor in determining their integrity, that it's only important in 10% of the cases and jackie speier expressed frustration that federal authorities haven't determined a cause of the san bruno fire yet. >> i think there's just an ongoing frustration that we still don't know why the pipe exploded in the glenview area. and until we know why, it's hard to know what steps need to be taken to protect residents throughout the region. >> reporter: pg&e is expected to have a more complete review o
