terry mcsweeney is live with the latest. terry? >> that report on the one hand talks about 38 leaks found in pg&e gas pipes, but it also points out they've all been fixed. it's going to be the topic of the discussion today. a couple dozen mayors, congresswoman jackie spear and 38 leaks total found of pg&e pipeline. four leeks were on high pressure lines, the same kind of line that brew here in san bruno last month. 34 other leaks were found, nine of them in oakland and berkeley, one millbrae and a number of others in claire county. pg&e has identified 300 manual valves for possible upgrades to automatic or remote shutoff valves. they're scattered from san jose, come on up the peninsula all the way to daly city and call the way across to livermore. take a look at congresswoman experience questions for pg&e as one of the many they'll be asking of pg&e officials. the mandatory inspection hadn't been ordered by the public utility commission, would the leaks have been foungd. pg&e say they would have been found probably during the annua

terry mcsweeney, abc 7 news. >> thanks terry. other news this morning, two san francisco police officers are recovering after being injured when their car hit a muni pole last night. they were heading southbound on san jose avenue near randall street about 6:45 yesterday evening. the car ended up on the muni tracks. the muni power pole was knocked over. the officers were not responding to a call. the officers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. no word on the cause. >> a fremont police officer who was badly injured in a shooting two months ago has finally been really leased from the hospital and is back home with his family this morning. 39-year-old officer todd young was shot trying to arrest a suspected gang member in oakland. one of the two bullets tore through his stomach and bladder. his recovery process will include several more months of rehabilitation and physical therapy. >> officials now say parts of an upscale north california mall could be closed for months because of a standoff with an arso

terry mcsweeney, abc 7 news. >> 5:05 now. governor schwarzenegger has signed a bill into law to help victims of the san bruno fire. families and businesses affected by the september 9th natural gas explosion will get relief funds and be allowed some tax write-offs. topping the list, a $75,000 property tax exemption for people who lost their homes. the state will provide the relief funds until an investigation determines responsibility for the fire. that fire killed eight people and leveled the neighborhood where it occurred. >> oakland police say two home invasion robberies that took place early tuesday morning and late tuesday night are linked. there are rewards of up to $5,000 for information leading to arrest. the first occurred shortly before 1:00 this the morning on east 26th street. the second incident took place on the 2,000 block of east 20th street shortly before 11 p.m.. several people were robbed of cash and electronics by two armed men in each incident. there were no injuries. >> an award-winning author is saying

terry mcsweeney, abc 7 news. >> thank you. california halls a whole lot of new laws on the books after governor schwarzenegger signed hundreds of new bills before yesterday's deadline. they range from kindergarten cutoff date to a way for car owners to make some money. jenelle wang is here with a look at the most important or interesting legislation. jenelle? >> kristen, the car sharing law is pretty original. it would allow vehicle owners to rent out their companies for money. welcome news for a car company that created new technology that keeps track of mileage and access times. if you rent out your car for about 20 hours a week, you could make $4,000 a year. a bunch of bills surrounded around kids. cutoff december 1st. the governor also signed a bill that allows foster kids to keep some of their benefits until the age of 21 instead of 18. and prosecutors can now charge parents with misdemeanors and fines if their kids miss too much school. the governor signed a bill requiring all school cafeterias to provide drinking water

terry mcsweeney joins us live from the 800 block of high street. terry? >> i am told that at least 50 firefighters are on the scene out here and they are a long way from wrapping things up. the building is still burning at 8:24 high street between bush and sutter. the roof of the building is still burning. inside it is so unstable firefighters can't go in and found out they couldn't go in by trying to go in through the fire escape. they're calling it they couldn't access the building. i'll step out of the way. you can take a look at the firefighters going at it down there. this is a four-story building. maybe an hour ago or so the call came in of a fire here. 50 people have been displaced. it's not just the front units or back units as well. the building certainly would appear to have the same significant damage if not totaled. there are two buildings on either side of this building. one has a zero lot line and there is damage there. they are doing what they can to preserve that building. on the other side of the four-story building burning, they have ano

terry mcsweeney is there live with the latest. terry? >> this fire's been knocked down but the damage has been done. eight families are homeless after a fire that broke out in the middle of the night. we're getting word of a couple injuries. take a look at the flames that did the damage. the call came into firefighters about ten minutes to 4:00 at the village parkview apartment complex. firefighters got out here. in fact there's a fire station less than a block away from the apartment complex. firefighters arrived, did what they could do but four units in one building are destroyed and three units in another building are very seriously damaged. when the calls came in a lot of eyebrows raised because there were reports of explosions and possibly ammunition going off. one of the people making that call was the mother of mckale salazar. >> i woke up and we thought we heard gunshots. i thought something was happening with our next-door neighbor because they were screaming. and then everyone's like run out, run out. we ran out and all of a su

terry mcsweeney is live in san mateo county with more. hi, terry. >> hell to you. the congress woman is meeting across the street in her office on el camino real and 4th avenue. many meeting not only with elected officials from san mateo county but also with pg&e officials is going much longer than anticipated. that may mean something, maybe not. we don't know. but we know why it was called in the physical place, the congresswoman saying the urgency is obvious. the meeting chaired by spear and local officials follows a report from pg&e that their crews found 38 gas leaks during inspections of their 2500 mile long gas pipe system. four were high pressure lines, the kind that blew in san bruno killing eight and destroying dozens of homes. 38 leaks is not an alarming number of leaks. >> that's a fairly normal outcome with that. we have thousands of miles of transmission lines, many more thousand miles of distribution lines and we test them on an ongoing basis. the representative has specific concerns. a representative from south san francisco wants to know when the ut
