terry mcsweeney is live with the latest. this morning went smoother than expected. >> yeah. hard to say. maybe people went earlier or took the dumbarton or the bridge but it was better than expected and crews are trying to make sure there's not even a question how this evening's commute goes. they're working on the crack right down there not far from where i am trying to work on that steel beam. it's just before the rise. i am told if all goes well -- and these a big if -- the repairs could be done before this evening's commute. thousands were slowed by the problem, a problem you can't see from up the here. the problem is a 10-inch crack in a 30 foot long wishbone-shaped steel beam which is attached to the concrete girders supporting the bridge deck. the beam was installed in 2001 as part of a seismic retrofit system. >> allows the bring to move 3 feet either way so it will roll with the punches during a earthquake. >> caltran says there was never ever any imminent danger but definitely something that needed immediate attention. $800,000 has been budgeted for the emergency r
