crews are making emergency repairs as we speak in the commute direction westbound after uncovering a crack yesterday. theresa garcia is live in foster city. theresa, how long is this going to take? >> kristen, caltran was originally estimating 24 to 48 hours to complete that emergency repair work. now it is saying hopefully it will be done by this afternoon. that work did begin yesterday after crews discovered a crack in a steel plate. caltran's crews found that 10-inch long crack on a section of the san mateo bridge yesterday. it's underneath the roadway, the structure that's designed to hold the bridge together in a earthquake. caltran has closed a segment of the far right westbound lane closer to the foster city san mateo side. caltran says the retrofit beam has been there since 2001 and they're not sure why it cracked but says it poses no immediate

located as you head up on the incline westbound on the bridge. the problem is actually underneath the bridge. to deal with the problem, they have one lane shut down. you can see people are still moving through there quite well at this hour. we expect the change to show as the traffic picks up with the morning commute. cal tran is hoping everyone will avoid this if possible. take the bay or dumbarton bridges. if you have to traveling across the bridge, this is what you will look at as you come across. this is video we shot as you drive across the westbound direction this morning. you hit the cones and then you see it coned off. it stops after you get up and over the incline, but you know with a morning commute, that is all it takes to cause a problem. there is a 10-inch crack in the 30-foot long wish-boned shaped steel beam right before the incline on the under side of the bridge. that was found on a routine inspection of the bridge, but they have to fix it. it is part of a retro fit that went in nine years ago. they need metal plates to fix it an

impacting westbound 92 in the commute direction for a second day. they have a stretch of westbound 92 blocked off right before you get to the high- rise. we saw bigger delays than usual yesterday with the morning commute. really during the heart of the morning commute most likely between 7:30 and 8:30 the case yesterday. it was backed up for about a mile just past the toll plaza. so it never saw huge delays but it was definitely busier than normal. a lot of people going southbound 880 using the dumbarton bridge as an alternate, which means it's going to be a good alternate again this morning. looks like those repairs won't be wrapped up until possibly this afternoon. so in time for the afternoon commute. this is westbound 84 towards the toll plaza and you can see one of our sensors there, 57 miles per hour towards menlo park. bay bridge another good alternate for the san mateo bridge. so far no metering lights and no delay heading into san francisco. and mass transit -- here's 880 through oakland. this is also good. this is past the coliseum. the ta
