washington sort of gets in the way of all of that, doesn't it? >> yeah, the tea party movement has put the republican party on probation, they want to see if these guys come to washington and change the ways from during the bush years, frankly. the republican party spent way too much money when they were in control and democrat stood on their shoulders and spent more and they want to see a new breed of conservative coming to washington, cutting spending, looking at all the programs and maybe moving forward to the balanced budget amendment. >> doug, final word. >> i don't think it's going to happen. a clash between the tea party movement and the established republicans and balanced budget, extending tax cuts, prospects and all have the chance to divide the republicans about before they get to the hill. >> they're posting competing letters to each other. doug and brian, stick around, we'll get some coffee and be back in a few hours on "fox & friends." smockers need not apply. starting next year, one hospital won't hire anyone who lights up. and wan

those inside washington and outside washington. >> definitely some skepticism inside the beltway about the tea party. and not surprisingly the tea party is an outside the beltway phenomenon. also, much more confidence in the ability of the tea party and the republicans, much more confidence in their ability to actually influence the agenda and be effective here in washington. high confidence outside the beltway. inside washington, relatively low confidence. another way of putting it, high cynicism about whether the republicans will be effective once in power. >> one of the other indicators was people inside washington have much higher confidence that president obama will be elected in 2012 than people outside. >> i was really shocked. the outside the beltway audience, only 26% thought he would be re-elected. about 49% said they did not think he would be. that leaves about a quarter giving what is really the only correct answer which is who knows. nobody can predict the future. about a quarter didn't have an opinion. pretty strong consensus inside the beltway that obama's election prosp

joining me from washington, mark mazzetti of the "new york times" and david ignatius of the "washington post." i'm pleased to have both of them here. i'll begin with mark who's been writing about this as well. what's the status of the investigation? what are the questions that they are in hot pursuit of this? >> well, they still don't know exactly who was behind the operation. they firmly suspect it was the work of al qaeda in the arabian peninsula, which is the al qaeda affiliate in yemen and they suspect that probably some of the senior leadership of that group and asiri, the bomb maker you mentioned, may have, in fact constructed the two bombs. but as of yet, they don't have anyone in custody. the person that they arrested over the weekend they released because they found out her identity had been stolen and was used to actually send the two packages. so right now they're still kind of short on leads. other than that, they still have to figure out exactly how the bombs were meant to be set off at which point they were meant be set off. so there's still a lot of questions. >> rose: th

but this term repudiation of washington. washington only does what's good for washington. washington this, washington that. when did that... this has always worked. republicans use it and it works. democrats out it and it works. liberals use it and it works. why does it always work. >> andrew jackson used it. it worked for him. well, it reflects, you know, i've said this before on the program but to me the most important political polling results of our lifetimes is they ask the question do you trust government to do the right thing most of the time? starting in 1932 straight through the '60s, 70 or 80% trusted government should do the right thing most of the time. that was easy to govern. now it's like 19, 20, 23% percent trust. that trust just isn't there. that's one of the things i think the obama administration misread and now realizes that. they're playing with something real. that doesn't mean people don't want to trust washington. i think they do. it means there's an incredible hostility. there's an assumption that there's corruption in washington and self-dealing.
