bob redell is live in san jose. he has a look at how brain injuries are changing the culture of football. >> reporter: good morning, brent. if you look at it on the scale of the nfl, there are roughly one to two concussions per game, so it's certainly a significant issue. later this morning in new york city the nfl's brain, head and neck medical committee will be meeting today and tomorrow to look at ways to cut down on concussions and traumatic brain injury that say take place on the field. this meeting comes after a youth sports summit in d.c. yesterday during which the national athletic trainers association agreed to team up with the nfl to push for laws that will better protect young athletes. now, the kbidea is for each sta to have a law similar to the one enacted in washington state which requires young athletes and parents to sign forms acknowledging the risk of a concussion. players with a concussion must be removed immediately from a game and can't return to play until they have been cleared by a doctor. no

bob redell is live with a look at why drivers got the ticks in getting out of the way for a standoff. >> november 11th, rush hour in the morning came to a halt on the upper deck of the bay bridge. a man in an suv pulled over and threatened to blow up the bridge. he was arrest and didn't have a bomb, but during that hour or so that traffic was backed up, a lot of cars were ordered to turn around and through the toll plaza gate. the toll plaza gates are by fast track. the electronic toll system and fast track distinguishes between the people turning around because of police activity or cheating their way through the toll game. the computer sent many of those drivers a $36 ticket and adding to the frustration of having that morning commute ruined that morning. the metropolitan transportation commission that oversee this is as acknowledgement and if you have received one of the tickets, all you have to do is appeal the ticket and explain what happened. you are on the bridge that morning during the standoff and ordered around and take care of the ticket. you will not be charged at all. in

bob redell joins us from outside the u.s. geological survey with more. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura. what would have thought the turning point in the bp oil spill would hinge on a cell phone picture and a lone scientist who works in an office in this building behind me in the usgs campus in menlo park. he served on the science team trying to stop the spill. in mid-july there appeared to be a problem with a cap placed on the blown out well. low pressure indicated there might be a leak. the government was thinking about removing the cap and they wanted the doctor's opinion first. unfortunately he had no access to the data in the computers in houston. a colleague e-mailed him a cell phone picture of the monitor displaying the readings. he can't show it without permission from the oil company. this was 6:00 at night and the government needed an answer asap. he created a model based on the cell phone picture. he double and triple checked his calculations and the next morning he presented the results in a power point presentation to the

bob redell is live with a look at when the suicide attacks are allegedly planned. good morning, bob. >> good morning, marla. sometime over the holidays is what the threat is specifying. whether it's airplanes and airports or something else or someplace else, the threat is not that specific. the information about a possible terrorist threat comes from two insurgents captured in iraq and they confessed that al qaeda is planning suicide attacks in europe and here in the united states to take place in the christmas season. even though the threat is vague, the government said it is credible enough that it is taking it seriously. considering last christmas when a man tried to blow up a plane with a bomb hidden in his underwear. one of the people who told them about the new threat claims to be part of taking orders from al qaeda's leadership. they claimed the failed bombings as one of the attacks, but they are skeptical concerned they made it after the fact. this morning we spoke with the people here at sfo and across the bay at oakland international. they say right now t

today in the bay's bob redell is live in milpitas. these are gas lines customers rely on to heat homes. >> both are here in the south and east bay. that runs from here in mill pit as near 237 through fremont. the other is 153 that runs between fremont and oakland. the california public utilities ared a 20% reduction in pressure until the lines can be reinspected with weak wells. this won't affect residential service and people will be able to heat homes. it's businesses that might see their service reduced. this is all tied to the gas pipeline explosion in san bruno. the past september that killed eight people and destroyed 37 homes. a few day ago it raised questions about the wells on the pipeline that blue up. turns out that some sections were only weld on the outside and not the outside and inside. that is considered safer. regulators reduced pressure in lines like 131 and 153 installed around the same time using similar welding techniques. the pressure must be reduced until the lines are reinspected through a water pressure test,
