carolyn appealed to the state agitant general. the only other women in this class happened to be the secretary, so she called her boss and be explained what had happened over the phone and told him what had gone on. carolyn went through with the closing ceremony as the distinguished graduate. the battalion personnel section back at the national guard headquarters where carolyn worked had never had a female nco. despite the fact that carolyn had had her e5 stripes pinned on her at that bnoc celebration and graduation, when she returned to her unit, she was told that she would be a specialist 5, not a sergeant. she told us, i said, no. i earned those stripes. it was, like, you can't be a female in charge. you look good and you're smart, you've got it but you're still a woman. i was a feisty young kid, and be i was, like, in your face. i said, you're not going to take my stripes away. carolyn got to keep her stripes. when lieutenant carroll transferred to the u.s. army, she excelled in her army career. she was accepted as, for flight

in 2005 colonel carolyn carroll deployed to afghanistan. she worked closely with american soldiers and special forces. she was executive officer of a nato unit for the canadian army. she was acutely aware of the dangers that were inherent in iraq and afghanistan war zones. she said, there's a chance that every time you go out, there's a chance you might not come back. now, all these women who have served in the u.s. military have traveled many ground miles and can point to their military service in thousands of miles on maps. however, their journey along the road of military history has far outdistanced all physical miles and leads, clearly, into the future. even so, women are still fighting for equality in the military and as u.s. citizens. all of these military women who we interviewed could not be included in this today's program, of course, due to time constraints, but they have of earned our respect -- they have earned our respect and admiration. ..

carolyn got to keep her stripes. when he transferred to the u.s. army she excelled in her army career. she was accepted as the flight training and helicopters when she graduated from fort rucker said she was rated on a cobra front seat. later she flew to the black hawk and then when carolyn was assigned to her more gains she flew the soviet helicopters ahead. in august, 1990, major carroll deployed to the operation desert shield and desert storm she was an executive officer of the units attachments to that unit 300 military soldiers form the day that the u.s. and coalition troops started moving across the direction in baghdad major carroll flew her cobra helicopters about and in front of the advancing american and allied troops. a site she would never forget. he said i was in desert storm in the first infantry division and led the attack against the burned. one of the most exciting things i did when i actually flew the mission on the ground attack is was like a world war ii movie because you had tanks and amol carriers and big tracks and refueled a

carolyn: how to get improvement... sometimes has different ideas. there's been a lot of negotiation and a lot of speaking together and now everyone agrees what needs to happen in this area. chris: trinity plaza, in the mid-market at 8th and market, there was a proposal to tear down 360 rent-controlled units. and the existing community that lived there, mostly filipino residents, in a long struggle... i worked with the residents to convince the developer to agree to replace each rent-controlled unit that is torn down, as well as include affordable housing units in a big market-rate development that they're going to do on that site. it's pushing a 37 to 38% affordability, which is unprecedented in any development deal. carolyn: it's like a zone plan, a whole plan that designates money for all sorts of things including housing, affordable housing. $40 million for arts and entertainment, which historically this area was the entertainment theater district of market st. of the city. we have all these great theaters that are underused, underutilized and ac

carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. pg&e has restored power to more than 4,000 customers affected by an outage in half moon bay. the lights went out yesterday afternoon and electricity was restored by 10:00 last night. so far this morning no new outages have been reported in the bay area. another 500 customers lost power briefly yesterday afternoon in pittsburg and bay point, this after a car ran into a power pole. and in redwood city and belmont, electrical service is back to normal following two separate outages caused by downed trees friday night. here's an example of the storm-related problems pg&e faces. in oakland winds knocked down a tree on quickly street near i-580. oakland firefighters and pg&e crews were dispatched to the scene. after the tree fell on a power line leading to one home, that house was damaged, too. the tree also hit a car that was parked nearby. despite all the rain, a lot of people are counting on this weekend to finish their holiday shopping. lisa amin gulezian shows us what shoppers are deal
