hexavalent chromium in san jose's water. thuy vu on how the local utility is responding. >> reporter: chromium vi can be found in a variety of sources, ground water, leather tanning operations, steel mills and now one group has found it in san jose's drinking water. >> reporter: it's clear, looks clean, but is it really? a national environmental group found unacceptable levels of toxic chromium vi, a heavy metal, in san jose's municipal drinking water supply. >> we found 1.34 part per billion in san jose. and that is significantly higher than the level that california epa is suggesting would be appropriate as protective for cancer. >> reporter: in fact, it's more than twice as much as what's considered safe by the state epa. san jose has the fifth highest amount of chromium vi among water samples taken nationwide. the cancer-causing chemical was found in nearly 90% of the 25 cities tested. >> i knew we would find it in some locations? buy did not expect it to find in this many locations. this is a nationwide problem. >> repo
