collins got lost while hiking alone last week. she did not have any food but told rescuers she sur vied by drinking water from a creek. a full scale search was not feasible so collins' name went looking for her and found her huddled near a downed tree. >> she had a little plastic bag in her pocket and said she would use that to drink water. sounds like she didn't eat anything during that whole time. >> collins injured her ankle while running along a path and tumbled into a radio convenient. she was unable to get out and ended up taking shelter until she was found. a 20-year-old man is in the hospital with with life-threatening injuries after being shot in the healed with an assault rifle this weekend. it happened on engel street in the bayview district. police are on the lookout for a suspect. they don't know what prompted that shooting. a nine-year-old girl spot while opening the door of her hercules home friday night is in stable condition this morning at children's hospital oakland. she is expected to make a full recovery. lisa

debra collins was walking in henry coe redwood state park. her break came six days later when a man and son came looking for her. >> reporter: they are not a search and rescue specialist. >> it took us an hour to get there. >> reporter: he is a software engineer who likes to hike with his soon. he decided to do something to find the missing hiker. >> thought i could help while i'm hiking. >> reporter: the father and son had been out for almost an hour and decided to turn back. but then an idea flashed through his head. >> instead of heading back, i called my wife and asked my wife to pick us up from another park entrance to could more ground. then it wasn't but 10 minutes later we found her. >> reporter: just off a steep unmarked trail cold, wet, and exhausted after spending six nights in temperatures as low as 30 degrees. >> i had dylan wait and then i went up ahead and called her, hello? are you okay? and she started responding yes, and very quiet and very low energy responses. but once i said, are you debra collins, then she was very relie

suzanne collins explains, the 16-year-old has been in custody for a year and a half. suzanne? >> reporter: well, kai. the victim, christopher jones, was beaten. he fell off his bike and died. and his mother said today, it is just too early to let the boy who struck the first blow out on home detention. >> reporter: jennifer atkins and her sister make their way hesitantly into the anne arundel courthouse. her son, christopher jones, was killed in the summer of 2009 by a group of juveniles who beat him when they encountered him on his bike. now, the teen who the first punch, wants to get out of a locked detention facility and come out on supervised probation. >> it's been really hard, especially with it being christmastime. and not having chris here with us. and then to have to deal with, you know, the possibility of this kid getting out of jail so prematurely. >> reporter: the juvenile who is now 16, told the judge by phone, from the detention facility in michigan, that he has matured and even leads younger youth there in doing the right thing. but the report shows he also has
