anne makovec is live in pacifica with the details. i'm glad you're not wearing a hat this morning, anne. >> reporter: i know. , you know, i should be because then my hair might have some hope of looking decent at some point today but it's just not the case. it is extremely windy out here along the coastline and it's going to be all day. but the good news is they just opened highway 1 in pacifica. it was closed for a few miles after a rockslide in devil's slide. let's look at some of the video that we shot at about 4:30 this morning. this was crews cleaning up the last bit of that mud slide and it was mainly mud at that point. they were making sure all the mud was off the road so cars weren't slipping around but there were a lot of rocks involved and they cleaned those up overnight. crews were out there for several hours. and this is the opening this morning was very good news for commuters because when that is closed which does happen from time to time, that can make a 10-minute commute last up to an hour.

kris was in pacifica talking about that. here the golden gate bridge, you see that the lens still glows because water is still on the lens and that will be an indication that you've got to make sure your windshield wipers are in good condition as well. smooth drive across the bridge but wet roadways. further north we're looking at one lane blocked by a sig alert but that's as you're heading north. so most of our viewers won't run into that. the bay bridge, we do have an issue. the metering lights are on but not an issue for these folks. the wet roadways are the issue coming out of oakland but the metering lights keeping the upper deck moving smoothly. lower your speeds, especially at the off ramps. keep that in mind. no problems off the east shore freeway. just a 20-minute drive off of the carquinez bridge approaching this area. as we look further south, southbound with the taillights around the bend and things have sorted themselves out nicely. we saw earlier slowing approaching the express lane but now a smooth drive over

this is a community technically part of pacifica but about two miles south of actual downtown pacifica. if you take a look behind me you can see where they've just reopened the roadway here where the flashing lights are. there were actually crews there when we first arrived about half an hour ago. they told us they had just cleared the road. it was just a matter of time before they opened it again to traffic. now officials shut it down last night just after 10:30 down to about seven miles north of half- moon bay. the road was blocked by a mud slide in the area known as devil's slide. it happened after rains and heavy wind whipped along the coast. crews found about 100 feet of mud in the southbound lanes just north of the highway sign. and according to to the chp website they initially thought they would be able to run one way traffic but that quickly changed and they were forced to issue an alert shutting down the road in both directions while they got out the bulldozers. back here live if you take a look out behind me here there's a denny's on the corner. it's too dark to make it out,

the heavy rain has caused another portion of the cliffside apartments in pacifica to fall away. now officials can once again concerned about the building on esplanade avenue. it has sat here quietly since last went's problems but this month's rains shook loose a piece of hillside bringing up concerns about the buildings on the street. the city is wondering what the owner is going to do. city officials say he needs to do something and they would like to set up a meeting but they can't reach him. a woman who was killed when a free fell on her tent at a wildlife preserve in santa rosa has been identified as a tourist from alabama. the tree, high winds knocked over the tree killing 70-year-old gail fallgas. she was a retired school teacher. she was reading to her seven-year-old granddaughter when the oak came crashing down on one of the luxury tents at the wildlife preserve. >> there was a tent with a father and son and they heard the initial crash and heard screaming. they went outside and saw what happened. they actually had a pair of scissors in their at the present time and they

this was the scene in pacifica as the storm started to pick up. meteorologist lawrence karnow is tracking the storm and here to show us the areas hardest hit right now. >> guys, it has been ripping across just about the entire bay area tonight. we have had gusts now up to 57. gusts of 30 to 40 miles per hour common. of course, just tons of rain. still see some heavy amounts of rainfall just about everywhere you go around the bay area but it will become more spotty into the next couple of hours. in toward san jose you're looking at moderate to heavy amounts of rainfall this area. beginning to move out of freemont. t. oakland looking at moderate to heavy rainfall. heavy rainfall in half moon bay. north bay still seeing heavy rainfall. look to the far north you'll notice the shade turns more to a lighter green. lighter amounts of rainfall. so we may begin to see the ending of some of the heavier amounts of rainfall. still, it has been impressive. check out some of these numbers, folks. almost 3 inches of rain. over 2-inches in palo alto and almost 6/

testing at lynnmarch beach in pacifica and lake shore and marina lagoon show unsafe levels of bacteria in the water. heavy rain from last weekend storms caused sewer drain systems to overflow. the beach in pacifica had also been closed because of bacteria levels but officials say the waters there are clear again. airport screeners taking a closer look at thermos bottles. air carriers have been alerted to a potential terror tactic that involves empty drink containers. an administration official anonymously confirms that but stressed there is no intelligence about an active terror plot. it was sent to airlines as part of the a regular update of home land security involving terror tactics. >> a sacramento airline pilot who exposed what he calls a major security flaw at u.s. airports is speaking out. he shot cellphone video at sfo showing how easy it is to gain access to tarmacs and runways. all they have to do is swipe i.d. cards at several doors. he shot this at sfo and the pilot doesn't want to be identified. >> how effective is security when everybody on board is screened and everybody

this guy ventured out onto the pacifica pier in the heavy winds. >> middle of a typhoon. any second you feel like you're getting blown off the bridge. and kind of exciting much kind of scary at the same time. >> reporter: there were sporadic power outages. about 5000 customers in da weathery d -- in daly city and some parts of san francisco. there are always some that are unprepared. there are others who will brave the awful weather to do some shopping. pg&e said tonight that all together along the peninsula there were 37,000 people without power tonight. but as far as we know now, robert, a ll of that power has been restored. >>> other news around the bay area now. oakland police are warning buyers to be careful when using craigslist. recently a number of people interested in buying cars have been robbed after responding to ads. police say that the victims were attacked and even beaten when they went to remote areas in the north and east areas of the city. so police recommend that you meet in populated public places and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. >>> san jose

the heavy rain on tuesday has caused another portion of the cliffside apartments in pacifica to fall away and now officials are once again concerned about the building on esplanade avenue. amy has the latest. >> when we first shot this video a year ago, you can see there was a grassy lawn behind the apartments at 330 esplanade. now you just see a rocky cliff. and, apparently, this isn't even the most dramatic vantage point. >> i didn't know the extent of it until i walked on the beach and looked up. >> kathy still lives in the apartment building next to the one sitting so dangerously close to the edge. >> all my friends joke around with me, say we're going to give you a life jacket for christmas. >> 330 esplanade has sat here quietly since last winter but this shook a piece of hillside bringing up concerns about the buildings on this street all over again. >> i'm a little worried but i try not to be. just depends. i mean, how bad the wind is going to be. >> mark willow by is the agent for kathy's building. he made sure tarps protect the lawn from rain and send the water from the roof
