ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty is there now with the very latest. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning, claudine. that's right. we are here off highway 1. this is a community technically part of pacifica but about two miles south of actual downtown pacifica. if you take a look behind me you can see where they've just reopened the roadway here where the flashing lights are. there were actually crews there when we first arrived about half an hour ago. they told us they had just cleared the road. it was just a matter of time before they opened it again to traffic. now officials shut it down last night just after 10:30 down to about seven miles north of half- moon bay. the road was blocked by a mud slide in the area known as devil's slide. it happened after rains and heavy wind whipped along the coast. crews found about 100 feet of mud in the southbound lanes just north of the highway sign. and according to to the chp website they initially thought they would be able to run one way traffic but that quickly changed and they were forced to

ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty just joined us. tara. >> reporter: it's one of the busiest shopping days of the year. it's amazing that police say no one was hurt. this crime unfold the yesterday just after 5:00 when a man wearing a trench coat with a rifle hidden inside tried to rob a clerk. first he hit up the clothing store inside the valley fair mall. for some reason he didn't follow through. he tried to attack -- carjack actually a woman in the parking garage. next he moved to the santa clara side of the mall where he tried to carjack another car. he ran into the mens warehouse and held up the clerk and took some cash. most shoppers were unaware of what was going on. >> he had it concealed in a trench coat. i think that kind of prevented some major panic. that's not to under estimate the violence in the nature of this incident and we are definitely taking this very seriously. >> reporter: in the end the suspect raced over to seasal street where he carjacked someone at knife point. now police do not know at the time why the sus

tara moriarty joins us from vacaville. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, pam. so many aspects of this story from incomprehensible. the age of the victims and suspect. this is the house where the children were attacked while they were sleeping. they were home alone at the time. right now the house is empty. that's because both of these children are in critical condition. someone broke into the house early sunday morning and attacked a 13-year-old girl sleeping in bed beside her 18- month-old brother. the suspect stabbed the girl with a kitchen knife more than 30 times and raped her. the baby woke up crying and the suspect assaulted him and tabbed him ten times in the stomach and chest area. the most disturnings a -- the most disturbing aspect is the suspect is a 14-year-old child. >> it's horrendous how he victimized this 13-year-old and 18-month-old child. for no apparent reason. >> reporter: now the suspect apparently went to sleep inside of the house. that's when the girl grabbed the baby and went to sleep. he is now in juvenile hall booked on attempted homic

ktvu's tara moriarty joins us now from south san francisco with new information. tara. >> reporter: well, friends of the victim say that a third person has now died. we are still awaiting official confirmation from police on that. but we have noticed that officer have stepped up patrols in the neighborhood this morning. now this is a look at the alley way where the victims were found. you can see it's been hosed off. it was riddled with chalk circles like the ones you see right here next to this candle. there are a couple other ones by the truck. down on the ground right there you can see about five or six of them there. these are spots where detectives found several bullet casings in the street last night. now it happened just after 7:00 at the corner of 8th and lenden streets. police say two people were killed under a hail of bullets and four wounded after a drive- by shooting most likely gang- related. two victims pronounced dead at the scene. and another rushed to the hospital where sources tell us he later died. this may be tied to an going trouble with a riv

ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty has been talking with firefighters and joins us with the very latest. >> reporter: investigators have been collecting evidence all day long. taking pictures and investigating witnesses. if you take a look at the entrance of the building you can see where it's burned out that's where officials say someone purposely lit a christmas tree. when the call came in witnesses say there were small children trapped inside the building. one of the victims said someone wedged a burning tree underneath her door. >> we woke up and heard screaming and babies crying and we look out the window and the house is on fire. it was flamed up. coming out of the door. blazing through the home. we had some guy had to drop babies out the window. fire department broke the gate off the door. she had to break her window to get her out of the house. it was crazy. >> reporter: mike thompson says the building has many bars on the window. that concerned crews. they wanted to make sure everyone got out fast. >> there were multiple families that live in here. this one entrance serves four

tara moriarty has more. >> reporter: come monday, you may see a lot more people on computers looking for work inside this unemployment office here in oakland. that's because in less than two days, 185,000 californians who receive unemployment checks may not be able to get them. now since obama's tax deal with republicans fell through, special extended jobless benefits are getting cut off. of a -- after a seven-month job search, dominic ewing just landed a construction gig but he worries for his girlfriend expecting a child. she's out of work and relies on that unemployment check. >> a lot of people are in my situation. it's very hard. we really need the help. single moms need this for their kids. they don't have a job now. >> reporter: people in their fine at tier of benefits, 20 weeks, as part of the extension, will be cut off on saturday regardless of whether they have reached the limit. this affects more than 800,000 people in the u.s. officials here tell us most of the long- term unemployed cannot go a week without their benefits check. that means somwill have to look for new pla

tara moriarty joins us with the update. >> reporter: good morning. people have been driving by cruisers all morning long. some picking up their parked car which is were here from overnight. others driving by checking out the scene but not willing to talk to us. we are not sure if they were witnesses. according to the contra costa county times, police arrested a 33 year old. last week if you look across my shoulder you can see there was a shooting caddy corner from where we are standing near the traffic light and gas station. we have noticed an officer patrolling the area. he expressed concern that the department maybe laying off officers. talk of cutting jobs comes at a troublesome time. last night three people were stabbed during the fight at cruisers on a-street. authorities say the 33 year old stabbed a person in the face, chest and back. the victim has urn gone surgery and expected to survive. this marks the 5th violent crime since last week and the police department maybe forced to cut back its force because of budget problems. >> people are goi

we're here live in oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> 6:34. san francisco police chief is holding a community meeting tonight. the subject is yesterday's officer-involved shooting where police shot and killed a man accused of stabbing a teenage girl. this happened around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. police say they were called to the scene of a party involving lots of young people. after a 15-year-old girl phoned in saying she'd been stabbed. three officers entered the home when police arrived. >> met the suspect inside and the suspect had some type of weapon possibly a knife. officers asked the suspect to put down the knife. the suspect advanced on the officers and the officers shot the suspect. >> police say two officers fired at the man. the suspect who has yet to be identified was taken to san francisco general hospital where he died. the girl who was stabbed was treated and released. the two officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation. >>> livermore police are warning people in one neighborhood ab

tara moriarty joins us from vacaville with the story. good morning tara. >> reporter: good morning pam. the victims were attacked while sleeping inside of their own house. right now the 13-year-old girl and 18-month-old brother are listed in critical condition. neighbors say they are stunned at what happened. one of the most shocking aspects of the story the person that attacked these children is a child himself. just before 3:00 in the morning yesterday a 14-year-old boy got into the house on ballsome way. >> unfortunately the 13-year- old was also sexually assaulted during the course of this and when the 18-month-old woke up he was also assaulted and stabbed. >> reporter: police say the suspect stabbed the baby more than ten times in the stomach and chest area. the girl was stabbed more than 30 times. authorities say that despite just being raped and stabbed the girl acted heroicically getting help with the neighbor. they discovered the suspect was asleep inside. the victims mother that was out for the night returned here back in the m

tara moriarty joins us now from yahoo's headquarters in sunnyvale. >> we are waiting for an official announcement from yahoo on the job cuts. that may not come until later today. we are at yahoo head quarters where a source inside the company has said as many as 700 people could be laid off. that is 5% of the work force. it would be the fourth round of layoffs in the last year. most of the latest cuts would come from the products division which is responsible for yahoo news, sports, finance, and other pages. yahoo has grown 4% while google has grown more than that. now according to the new york times yahoo's chief executives has been trying to reinvigorate yahoo that has suffered from years of bureaucracy. they have been unable to capitalize on social networking and has lost its dominance in the search network. >>> time now 5:02. just hours ago dozens of police officers rushed in to control the wild and out of control barroom fight in sonoma county. this broke out at 1:00 a.m. at the rocks bar and lounge in petaluma. a fight that started inside that bar spilled out on to the streets.

tara moriarty joins us live with details of growing crime concerns in the city. good morning, tara. >> reporter: that is right the stabbing happened here at cruisers saloon less than seven hours ago. it's the latest in a string of violent crimes. police say that three people received stab wounds during a fight. at least one of the injuries is serious. it's not clear what set off the bar brawl this latest incident is one of five violent crimes to have happened since wednesday. now despite the apparent surge in crime, the city is getting ready to lay off six officers because of budget problems. >> if there are more cops laid off, people will know there are not cops around and they will be more liable to do bad things. the crime rate will increase. >> reporter: last week a woman was dragged to her death and two men were injured in separate shootings. antioch has recorded ten homicides this year. there were only five in 2009. the police layoff could been neitherred if they -- negotiated. antioch is city of 100,000 methamphetamine and it will -- antioch is a city of o
