we'll have more on her condition in just a moment but first the family of suspect jared loughner issued a written statement this evening delivered to the media at their home by a representative. it says: ben tracy begins our coverage tonight from tucson. ben, what's the latest? >> well katie, the f.b.i. is still here at the safeway grocery store here tonight, this is where the shooting took place and as you can see by the yellow tape, this is still very much a crime scene. while we're learning more about the allege t shooter, he is now behind bars in phoenix. meanwhile, his family here in tucson as you just mentioned is finally breaking their silence. for three days now the f.b.i. has been scouring this grocery store parking lot looking for shell casings and bullet fragments. they're also searching for even the smallest pieces of information about the alleged shooter, 22-year-old jared lee loughner. ever since the mass shooting on saturday, loughner's parents have been secluded in their tucson home. but the f.b.i. has interviewed them extensively. their neighbor, wayne smith, shocked th

jared loughner's friend bryce tierny told "mother jones" magazine loughner kept a journal of his dreams and tierny saw it. and we may finally hear from the parents of the alleged shooter, jared loughner. it's been reported that his father has written a statement and he may release it. >>> jared loughner remains locked up this morning as investigators dig for more clues. the 22-year-old was denied bail monday at his first court appearance. he's accused of saturday's shooting rampage which left six people dead and 14 injured, including congresswoman gabrielle giffords. authorities tell cbs news that they think loughner targeted giffords out of anger towards the governor, not out of hatred for any particular party. he might have been upset after reportedly asking giffords at a 2007 event, "what is government if words have no meaning?" and getting no answer. >> he seemed to dwell on the fact that she wouldn't answer his question. i think that's just like the start of it. >> friends say loughner appeared increasingly unstable. this makeshift altar with a skull was discovered in his back yard. congresswoman giffords remains here in critical condition. but doctors give them encouraging news.

there's been a lot of conversation about how students like jared loughner can slip through the cracks, and i know this is something you really want to focus on now. >> i was very honored to have a visit from the president and the first lady in my hospital room and we spent a few minutes talking about something that every teacher knows-- that very early on you see the kids that are separated from other kids and clearly are showing social behavior problems and mental health problems, and we need to do a better job as a nation of identifying these kids and getting them help. i have no malice toward this young man at all. i only have sadness that we as a society are not able to help him >> couric: i know before you left the hospital you had an opportunity to visit with congresswoman giffords. how did she seem to be doing? >> her husband mark came over and got me, and when we arrived in the room he had me sit right next to her and then he said very loudly "pam's here." and she squeezed my hand. and she's a fighter. i have a lot of confidence that she will be back in the saddle. >> couric:

we have a lot of witnesses, surveillance tape showing jared loughner with the gun. he clearly was the sole gunman. he told investigators that he acted alone, and then he invoked his fifth amendment rights and has now refused to cooperate any further. it's interesting, though-- the sheriff last night in tucson mentioned this second person of interest. that's a bit of a mystery as to who this person is. i've been told now that this person, described as a white male in his 40s or 50s, was seen with loughner prior to the shootings in the vicinity. perhaps in one of the stores there. he's been seen on the surveillance camera. the authorities simply want to find out, did he know about this? did he have any role whatsoever? did he perhaps drive loughner to the scene? i'm told that he is not a gunman, and in that sense, not a suspect. >> schieffer: i find this very interesting. we find these people that are always described as deranged and so forth. they always seem to be smart enough to know when to stop talking. >> you know, the other thing is the congresswoman yesterday

what do we know about that time in jared loughner's eyes? >> well, we've talked to friends who see that as kind of a breaking point in which he came into high school out of junior high school as someone who appears to have some small problems with bullying. he was picked on but it seems like he was not out of the mainstream of his junior high school. he took music lessons, played in the jazz band, he was part of the larger group of the high school and friends say starting around 10th grade that starts to decay. he had a goal friend sort of cut off other friends and he and his girlfriend broke up. he wound up with no social connection. then you see later on in high school towards junior year or senior year an incident in which he's caught in the school having drunk a large amount of alcohol, a large amount of vodka the night before. she shows up at school at 9:00 a.m. obviously drunk and has to go to the hospital he's so drunk and he tells the responding police officer that he drank because his father was upset and yelled at him. so you're st

he's been identified by people familiar with the investigation as jared loughner, 22 years old. the pima county sheriff's office says he used a pistol during the shootings. federal officials are examining a myspace page that belonged to jared loughner as well as a youtube video that was linked to him. the myspace page, which was removed within minutes of the gunman being identified by u.s. officials, included a goodbye friends message that was published just hours before the shooting. it asked friends to please don't be mad at me, and that is the latest on the shootings and the alleged gunman today in tucson. we'll take a look now at an earlier briefing held by governor jan brewer. >> good afternoon. all of arizona is shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific tragedy that transpired this morning in tucson. i have been in contact throughout the morning with law enforcement officials as well as mayor walkup, and just a short while ago with the president of the united states. the president conveyed his heartfelt sympathies for our state and shared determination to ensure that jus

did the system fail jared lee loughner or was he so troubled he never would have been caught? >> i think that not only did the system fail this young man but the correct systems were not in place. for example, we didn't have police or other first responders in all of the interactions that he had become aware of mental illnessillness, become aware of what the warning signs were. for example, if they had crisis intervention training this would be an opportunity for this young man to be taken in to the mental health sector as opposed to now in to the justice system. >> woodruff: what do you think about that? is it possible for just lay person who have said this guy is weird then call the cops and stop mayhem or was this just something that was going to happen? or some something that was unpreventable? >> i certainly wouldn't call it unpreventable or say necessarily that someone speaking up would have prevented it. we simply don't know. would have at least given -- created an opportunity for it to be potentially be prevented. i wouldn't necessarily say that reports had to be made
