"today in the bay's" christie smith is live on treasure island with more on this tragic story. christie? >> reporter: good morning to you. right after the runner collapsed witnesses describe a scene of confusion and delay. they say rather than seeing the first responders on scene immediately that it was fellow runners and race volunteers who administered cpr for quite some time. now the man who collapsed and died is 36-year-old peter hass. we do have video of him this morning that was taken in 2009 when he was being interviewed. he was talking about his company pet for usa, a wholesale pet store. he was running in the keizer permanente half marathon in san francisco this weekend. 13.1 miles through golden gate park. one witness told nbc bay area news that from the time he collapsed, he was receiving cpr for 15 minutes, but still there were no emergency responders there right away. now, published reports say that fire dispatchers were given three different locations for the incident. so far no cause of death has been released, but an autopsy is set for some time this week. repor

christie smith is live at treasure island this morning. there's word drivers could get a little distracted. >> reporter: yes, it is impressive. with each piece that goes up, this tower is becoming more and more the centerpiece of the new bay bridge. i want to step aside so you can see what's going on this morning. if you look over there near the bottom you can see that a part, a large part is being hoisted up this morning. when we last checked in an hour ago that piece was totally flat there. right now the tower is 374 feet tall, which is already taller than koyt tower in san francisco and taller than the tribune tower in oakland. this will be the fourth tower section for the self-anchored suspension span. when it is complete the whole thing will be 525 feet tall. the jacks hoist the section into place. the last time a section was installed was in mid-december. and this was a long and steady process. each section takes about 30 hours to lift and to bolt into place. the first tower sections went up last july. and progress on the new bay bri

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in oakland. the bad news here is $4 a gallon might seem like a bargain in a few more weeks or months. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. you know, i have to tell you when prices get like this we have seen people running in and out of this gas station very quickly buying a whole lot of gum and not a whole lot of gas. this is just something they really don't like talking about. if you drive you have to pay for it. and we are looking at nearly $4 a gallon here at this gas station in oakland. as you said, it could go higher than that. analysts saying if we see a problem with oil coming from places like iran or saudi arabia, this case could mean that the bay area would pay $5 or $6 a gallon. what's behind this? the uprising in libya set record-setting gas prices on wednesday with oil touching $100 a barrel for the first time since 2008. one driver told us she's tightening her belt but who can just stop driving? >> all i can do is just, all i can say is i just keep getting the gas. i don't have a choice.
