i am very honored to join supervisor chu, a supervisor carmen chu, eric mar, and jane kim, and supervisor campos, supervisor mirkarimi, malia cohen is here as well. it is a wonderful occasion to celebrate our chinese new year at city hall. i want to welcome all of you here. i have been thinking about my first month on this job. as you know, i try not to follow the speech sometimes that i scripted for. i tried to speak what is on my mind. the thought here is that it is no longer a lunar new year celebration just for our chinese community. what our community now has to offer is really expanding the family to all of these other diverse groups in san francisco. that is what makes this so wonderful. we can share what this joyous occasion means and connect with all the other families of the city, whether african american, latino families, russian families, or all of the some groups of our asian families, it is what makes the city very special. if i have seen anything the first 30 days of this inaugural apartment that was historic redone by our board of supervisors, it allowed me this special pr

i know as a former member of the school board -- jane kim as well -- they serve our communities well. one thing that mayor ed lee brought up, for me, personally, lunar new year was a time to get together with family. i remember my grandmother cooking all of the great new year food. it brought us together but it was also an opportunity to share our culture with others, bring more unity among all of our communities. half the lunar new year to everyone and let's unite our communities together. thank you. kim, supervisor jane kim's office is in touch with all those people. and they could really, really benefit in from that and they are looking for storeser the ability to buy fresh produce. that was one of the issues that came before the commissioner that set off this -- well, anyway, i won't go there, but set up the reason for the tour. and it revolves around the establishment in the tenderloin had previously asked for liquor permit and we turned them down and they were encouraged to work with the mayor's office of economic and workforce development to set up the grocery store to be liquor free and sell produce and fruits and vegetables and that kind of thing. and they were trying to do that and i would encourage you to do that outreach in that area. as far as the soils, i don't know if the department of agriculture already look at that kind of thing and how much of a problem it is. i wouldn't think it would be as much of an issue on private property and backyards, but vacant lots might be a different issue, but i don't know if it's that big a deal. and

our next commendation will be offered by i -- our supervisor from district six, jane kim. supervisor kim: thank you, president chiu:. i'm really excited today to present commendations to an organization that does really amazing work in our district, la voz latina. neighborhood six and the grouppeds in the greater mission area are very familiar with the amazing work of this organization, a fabulous group of women, mothers, that contribute to the vitality of our neighborhoods. they are a model for real community organizing and have taken on leadership roles on important issues that matter within our community, whether it's the safe passages guidelines, a program that started from the community with the boys and girls club north of market c.b.d. and several other community-based organizations, to take back the community to our own hands, to make the streets safer for our kids walking home from school and after school programs, to partner with a diversity of groups in the tender loin. they also work actively with parent groups in several of the public schools including tenderl

i also attended a d6 community meeting with supervisor jane kim. we had a lot of discussions around the educational needs around the carmichael community and outlying area, and what is happening with rec and park, and how we can ensure quality and safety for our students in the community. i want to thank supervisor kim for providing the opportunity. item t is the report of closed section -- closed session actions. the board approved the expulsion of a middle school student. a public employee was dismissed. the board acted pursuant to the code to authorize the superintendent answer to fund managers -- and certified managers to offer their release for the school year. there was the appointment of one principlal, four site managers, 18 assistant principals, and four supervisors. there were classified personal transactions and the acceptance of gifts for the month of january, 2011. before our adjournment, we are very sad to have to adjourn our meeting with three wonderful people that have been in our lives. i would like to start by asking jill wynns to
