now here's anderson cooper. >>> tonight, the terrible power of tornados and the almost unimaginable impact of one. the one that hit joplin, missouri. the deadliest tornado on record, part of the deadliest tornado season in half a century. it stayed on the ground a very long and when it left, it took a large part of joplin with it. >> oh, man! >> oh! it's getting big, big, big. >> at least 126 people dead, dozens still missing, the actual number not known. local officials believe up wartds of 8,000 structures were damaged or destroyed. nearly two dozen people, including three young men, took cover at a convenience store. the video is dark, but the audio, the sounds tell a story. >> oh, my god! [ screaming ] >> imagine pushing open the door after that incredible experience. elsewhere in joplin, one couple recorded the scene moments after the tornado struck. destruction all around them, homes on fire. they called out for the young man's sister and fiance. >> sarah! sarah, mike! >> of course, there's no end to the heartbreak, but no end to hope either. we met tracy pressler, looking for will,

anderson cooper is live in joplin tonight in missouri. anderson, these are quite desperate scenes. the pictures of really horrific. you got there the last few hours. what are you making of what you're seeing? >> reporter: it is really -- as you said, it's obviously horrific. what maybe the pictures don't show is the weather that's still -- the weather system that's still affecting this area is making it very difficult for those who are out searching for people who may still be alive trapped underneath the rubble. it's cold here. there has been a driving rain here throughout the day. severe thunderstorms. major lightning. huge lightning strikes all around us over the last several hours. and the bad weather is expected to continue into tomorrow. huge bolts of lightning just there. i don't know if you saw any of them behind me. you can imagine what this does for anybody that may be trapped underneath rubble still and may still be alive who is going to have to spend the night here in the driving rain. it will give them access to liquid, something to drink which is obviously good for an

. >> we turn now to anderson cooper in another part of joplin, missouri. anderson, thanks for being with us. >> thanks for having me. you hear that father and i mean, there are people like that -- you run into them wherever you go. and it's really hard to listen to. we're on three days now. and there's a lot of people volunteering. they just gave a press conference saying there's 5,000 people who volunteered and stuff. there's still 1500 people unaccounted for. there's a lot of frustrated parents who are being told you can't go to the morgue, you can't identify bodies, you got to wait a week or two. so there's a lot of questions about how organized this effort is. and whether it's going to be able to ramp up in the next day or so to get some of these parent's answers. for many, there aren't any answers right now. i've been out today with a family of a young man named will norton who just graduated high school. was going home from the graduation ceremony with his dad when the tornado struck. they were in a hummer and an suv. his dad tried to hold on to will

we go to anderson cooper with "ac 360" in joplin. >> good evening, everyone. it is aa very difficult night here and joplin, missouri. the death toll is 116 but that number, frankly, is likely to rise. the number of missing at this hour is simply not known. it's impossible at this point to know. we're going to try to talk to the mayor of joplin in a few moments to get the latest information we can. there's a lot to tell you about. now, the effected areas have been declared a disaster area by president obama. there are crews out even now still looking for people who may be alive, still trapped in the rubble. and the rubble is all around us. it goes for miles. as far as the eye can see. the location i'm at, it is just completely destroyed neighborhoods, block after block. all you see on the horizon are broken and bent and destroyed trees. there is lightning in the air. a heavy downpour of rain, which has been going on and off throughout the day, which has been making the search and rescue operations all the more difficult. and now night has fallen. again, there v
