and the story of atlanta, the idea of community controlled schools is not just an atlanta story. so it is a story that an approach to education reform that was attempted all over the nation. and in part on eisai detected i should say that it was attempted, embrace, but also it became the approach out of necessity because atlanta, like so many cities had to deal with white flight, with a contract team economy. so it is a very complex circumstance, a part of why the african-american who took over the cities were not able to achieve all they hope by the time they actually gain power. i think that ms. mathews fears were borne out in politics and the political arena. >> i really liked your bottom-up approach to history. i think that's really valuable because it lends texture and an understanding of what actually happened. and it makes things seem more contingent and more contested than they were, then the sort of dominant narrative has. so where does the dominant narrative comes from? on the lawyers and thurgood marshall, are they just more prominent and is that what makes a dominant

he got to know these clients because sncc, the students in the atlanta movement, worked with atlanta's ghettos, trying to help people who were poor find a way out of those conditions. the students helps people obtain social services, balanced budgets, all sorts of matters and moore handled related legal cases. he also worked on behalf of conscientious objectors who were anxious to avoid service in the vietnam war. he represented school disaggregation plaintiffs, at least until he became a critic of school disaggregation. he handle criminal proceedings including capital cases. he filed first amendment actions on behalf of all manner of demonstrators. his roster of clients included stokely carmichael, cleveland sellers, angela davis, julian bond, some of the most prominent activist of the 1960s. moore had an empathic lawyering style which endeared him to his clients. he was called the lamb. one's neck volunteer called him quote a big lovable teddy bear. she said, moore held it all together for activists under pressure. howard moore had worked with me and trying to get myself together. i

we're 310 feet below grade, deep under atlanta in hard rock. in the downtown area of atlanta, the sewer system and the stormwater system are combined and there are overflows during storm events, and so the purpose of this system is to relieve that flow, take it into the tunnel, transport it to a brand-new treatment plant, clean up the chattahoochee river. narrator: instead of the combined sewage overflowing into the river, it will flow into this tunnel that acts as a storage tank. the water will then slowly empty into the new plant for treatment before it's released back into the river. man: the system in total is about 8 1/2 miles, 27 feet in diameter. most of the time it will be dry. the only time it will fill is when the sewer system is overwhelmed by the storm. it is a massive project. our budget was $210 million. we've worked about a million and a half man-hours. hunter: it is an incredible amount of work. our capital program right now is $3.9 billion. over a period of less than 10 years. franklin: so it's very expensive. the bottom line i
