>> it's a small world. >> yes, it is. >>> jeff ranieri is here with us. do you wear your class ring? >> no, i did not purchase one. let's take a look outside here in oakland. you can see we have clear skies and also a bit of fog forming well off the coastline. we're going to see that roll in tonight. and the areas with the fog throughout the morning, it stayed cooler. we warmed up to 70s in los gatos and 69 in livermore. right now, cooling off to 50s here throughout the coastline and through the peninsula. 65 in san francisco and starting to drop off throughout our interior sections with 63 currently in livermore. tonight we'll see that patch of fog, windy at the coastline, still staying dry for tuesday with 70s inland. ahead, midweek, we will bring in our wednesday with showers coming on back. we have the system out here in the northwest that will produce the strongest rain up in washington and oregon. for us, it brings showers into wednesday and drop temperatures down. as we head towards tomorrow morning, we make sun and clouds by the noon hour and the

let's bring in jeff ranieri now, and jeff, we're looking at the wind headed toward south beach and across the bay. >> our computer picking up on these northwesterly winds, they're very dry and they're hot and they're continuing to fan the flames. you can still see the flames on the top of that build at this point. as we've been mentioning, a tough time getting containment of this fire, as we've seen one of the warmest days we have had in months in some cases, push across the bay area. it looks like these winds are going to stay pretty consistent ton, even some gusts into the low 20s. once again, right off of folsom reet in the re1000th block. and they're likely having to do this possibly in shifts here as this heat is so intense, along with those temperatures outside. you can see that locator map that we just put up, this is going to be something that the wind is going to continue to fan here as we head throughout the next several hours. let's hope they can certainly get containment out of this here in the next half hour or so. >> okay, jeff. we want to update this now. we're just hearing

i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. the sun has come out. details on what your weekend is looking like. plus tracking some severe weather and tornadoes that have >>> weather is turning into the big story right now. i want to get straight to jeff ranieri. we have a tornado that has touched down near chico. any reports of any damage or anything like that? >> no reports of damage or injury we've heard about. this warning does stretch from chico to paradise down to durham through 6:45. likely extended as these i isolated thunderstorm cells are staying intact. we have some twitter pictures coming in and some unbelievable chopper video. when you think about it here in california we only average zero to one tornado a year. these are live chopper pics as this rope tornado is touching down. again, a very weak fum there. we've seen it lift up and then come back down but amazing to see this happening here in california. this is probably about the fourth or fifth funnel we have had touching down. this, i believe, is near the durham area where we are pic

a man who's been in the strike zone many times, jeff ranieri, joins us now to explain a little bit, jeff, of the science behind why this has been such an active season. >> jay, thank you so much for your reporting there. we know the pictures only show a small section of what's happened, especially joplin, where seven miles of complete and utter devastation is occurring right now. let's take a look at why it's been so severe not only this past week but for weeks in a row. that i emgentlemajet stream at 400 miles per hour. actually, out here in the west, with he have some small link to this because we've seen strong dips in the jet stream across the western u.s. which has been attributed to la nina producing these extremes. what happens when we get the jet stream dipping in the west? it has to kind of give and dip somewhere else, and it has been so persistently happening right across the central and southern u.s. that and that la nina has been sending these stronger jet stream patterns across the central u.s. and this pattern has been so slow to shift. if you think in california we've had

. >>> let's turn things over to jeff ranieri and so, windy today, but rainy on sunday. >> yes, yes. we are looking at that rain coming back. i'm kind of laughing here because it's like, go figure. we're already well into may and starting to see these winter conditions coming back here. today, we did manage some 70s in our typical spots in the south bay with 72 in san house. 72 in los gatos and santa cruz, popping up to 76. so a nice day if you were able to get outside. but our winter storm watch already in place. already lightening strikes near lake tahoe. we'll have more on that snow coming up. let's bask in some of the dry weather now. oakland, 68 degrees. winds southwest at 17 and to san francisco. look at the bay bridge and traffic is moving along smoothly. winds westerly at 17 miles per hour. the onshore flow, still keeping it cool here with 50s and 60s, but it is starting to cool off quick in livermore. 61 in san jose with cooler air edging closer and closer. no rainfall at this point. it's going to be dry even into saturday morning. what we're going to be watching for saturda

jeff ranieri joins us now. you made the sun come out, jeff. >> yes, we did. i found my inner zen today with this sun out. it really is hard not to be in a great mood. 61 right now in san francisco and clear skies here, right across san francisco. visibility excellent. no fog at all developing, even though the winds are west at 22, we just haven't seen enough moisture pile in from the pacific. we are watching a few showers here, even with all this sunshine. very, very isolated. napa, looking at some light showers over the next hour, but that is really the last of this. as this system continues to push off towards the south and the east, if you are heading to the sierra, we'll have to watch out for some lingering snow showers as well. current temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s as this winds down after some two feet of snow up across the summit. right now, we're basking in some of this warmth here. still 70-degree weather for parts of the peninsula. palo alto, low 70s and 68 santa rosa. down right warm today even though some temperatures didn't get out of

we're going to check in live in a minute, but first jeff ranieri will show us the numbers. how hot did it get? >> did spike up to some 90s throughout parts of the east and also the south bay. let's look at where my hottest numbers are, santa clara, 92, gilroy, 92, pleasanton, and what helped spur in the heat was the drying northwest wind, anywhere from 15 to 20 miles per hour, really helps to keep this weather krafrpg up m high pree high pressure sitting offshore is driving these winds and producing a lot of sinking and warming air here across the bay area where we did have plenty of 80-degree heat. as we just mentioned, this is some of the hottest weather in seven months. the last time it was this hot was back on october 2nd when the east bay got up into the upper 80s. as we all know, big weather can mean big business and we join elise. how is the weather impacting the businesses? >> reporter: remember a few weeks ago we had all the rain and now sunshine. local businesses like this one behind me are finally breathing a sigh of relief. >> the weather's incredible. i've been

we bring in jeff ranieri who has more on the floodwaters. >> that's right, raj. the major flooding in the southeast continues as the mighty mississippi river continues to flex its muscles. as we take a look, what you're going to see in this video is just devastating here. the rainfall and snow melts from record-setting snow in the midwest, flowing down through the mississippi which is expected to hit 48.7 feet. that could make it an all-time record level. they haven't seen records like this since back in 1937. it took more than a week for the river to rise this high, and officials say it will take at least a week for it to recede. the army corps of engineers is opening floodgates to help ease pressure downstream. >> we've reached the trigger to operate the bonnet carre spillway, passing new orleans. >> and people in louisiana are alreadyer movingf o of thth mississippevi l mississippi levees ee est torms, tornadoes ichu.anrr es icrr whsatwh ouki'rta le ang'rookt as i a the mississip riverer in memphis. flood stage is 34 feet. we're well over ten feet above flood

let's turn things over to jeff ranieri to find out what the rest of the week will bring. >> if you liked what we had this weekend, i think you'll like each and every day especially as we head into wednesday. some of the warm spots today, pleasantton, 83, walnut creek 82, and san jose 79. gilroy and morgan hill mid-80s today. we are starting to see some cooling near the coastline. a little bit of an onshore flow, still holding on to some heat in the east and also the south bay. right now livermore, one of the warmer spots with 78 currently right now. so as we take a look at tonight, we are going to see breezy conditions at the coastline, a few clouds, nothing major. tuesday, stays warm, plenty of 70s, and here's where it gets great. if you want some hot weather, a few 90s possible in the long-range forecast. high pressure is responsible for all this warmth building into the bay area. it will keep it warm once again for tuesday with a few 80s possible, but it's wednesday where we look to have some of the hottest weather of the week with a few potential 90s. we may see a bit of cloud cover

we bring in jeff ranieri. we were talking coming into the studio today, please explain here. >> it's wild, it's wacky, it's all about the jet stream taking an aggressive dip to the south. look at this, the past 48 hours we have had close to a half inch here from the north bay over towards the east bay. that now nearly doubles what we should have for the entire month on average for may. we saw that in just a four-day period. again, we're doubling monthly averages here. this is how rare and unusual it is. as that jet tream continues to drop to the south. so as we zoom in clo jr what we're going too find here are winds gusty atne, t mi c miles per hour stained winds and anywhe from 15 to 25 miles per hour inland as this area of low pressure slowly moves in we're finding moderate areas of rainfall, any travelifa on 101 or interstate 80 is going to be wet and also very, very slick. also for the east bay, the oakland a's game happening tonight,ve we do expect wind an rain towards danville, also sht,ers and moderate
