until lee attacked him. jim, lee emerged almost overnight. lee became the successful defender of the confederacy. was he a sleeping giant that was allowed to slumber too long by jefferson davis? >> well, i don't think so. because lee's experience in the first year of the war had been a succession of failures. after he had helped immobilize the virginia troops and then had joined the confederacy, when virginia finally did join the confederacy, he had been sent out to deal with the problem in the western part of virginia, which became west virginia, where mcclellen actually had overseen successful union occupation in many of that area. lee was sent out to western virginia to try to recover that area in august of 1861. and every effort he made turned out to be a failure. he came into -- came under all kinds of criticism from the richmond newspapers. it was called granny lee as you suggest. then in november of 1861, jefferson davis sent him to the south atlantic coast to charleston. just in time for lee to witness the capture of fort royal by the

lee new the battle was impending. so hills division makes the forced march of 17 miles and gets to the battlefield at 4:00 in the afternoon. those that are not scattered along the way. i think half of the division gets there and crashes into the flank of the brand cyberattack -- burn it cited attack and was threatening to cave and the right flank when hill crash his in the left flank and 53 breathes a great sigh of relief and it saved the day for the confederates. find his last words tell him to come up that is what he is referring too. >> i think you adjust the mcclellans weaknesses that lee deserves blame because he took enormous losses and the army was in grave condition when they cross the potomac into berlin to fight the south the cross with 40,000 men? >> blame? lee hold the termination was to get this over with as soon as possible and i think the recognize the south could not maintain is so very long against the north so from the time he takes command on june 1st 1862, he takes the offensive to try to end the w

was call the granny lee, as you suggest. then in november of 1861 jefferson davis sent him to the coast of charleston just-in-time for lee to witness the capture of port well by the union navy and the occupation of the south carolina and georgia sea islands by union forces, another reversal of the confederacy. lee had to check to deal with what was going to be the consequence of that. he gave orders to pull back range of the navy which was seen as another major retreat by the confederacy. it is not that lee was some kind of a sleeping giant his talents were not recognized. he actually had not really succeeded in doing anything. he was called back to richmond in march in 1862, became a military adviser to jefferson davis and then began fashioning the confederate strategy of a counter-offensive first with stonewall jackson in the shenandoah valley and then joe johnston was wounded at the battle of southern pines. lee was given direct command of what he named the army of northern virginia, and that is when the great news releas

[applause] it is one of will to have a building that reduces carbon emissions. webcor has been building a foundation for cycling for the last 11 years by supporting 8350-member cycling team. we have a professional team. we set by women to the beijing olympics -- four women to the beijing olympics, and we have national champions. we have been very successful. now, we are advocating for cycling. commuting, for kids to be able to have a safe way to get to school, more bicycle lanes, a better understanding that there needs to be recognition of the cyclist and -- as a vulnerable user on our roads,

now, mayor lee, if you'll forgive me, i was told there would be a teleprompter. so i'm not that good of a speaker. just off the cuff, so i've got a couple of notes. and basically i want to make this brief because i want to get on to the performances but there are three things that i would like you guys to remember or to address. one is sort of why me? why s.f. cat? and why carnaval? so the first question, at least some people are asking, is why a half-white, half-lebanese guy from ohio heading up this organization? and i'll tell you, it was pretty easy, it just took 20 years of participation and commitment to the mission district and to the carnaval community. i've been involved, my first -- i took part in 1991 and i performed as a dancer, a d.j., a drummer. i became king and i also performed with over a dozen groups including aqra rela who are going to perform today. i guess could you say i'm culturally curious. and fortunately for me san francisco is, in my opinion, and i've traveled quite a bit, this is the best place to be culturally conservative. i'm sorry,

what did you learn about harper lee and her reasons? >> well, i was fortunate enough to get great access to two very close friends of her. a new york city couple who gave their friend, harper lee, money. they remain very, very close dear friends to this day. the other person i was also very privileged and fortunate to talk to was alice finch, harper lee's older sister. alice is one of the first women in alabama who was ever admitted to the bar. she -- at 99 she's the oldest practicing attorney in the state. she continues to practice every day, and she hopes to celebrate her 100th birthday in september at her law desk. she was quite a character and told me quite a bit about how the lee girls were raised. and her answer to that question is, she quoted her sister saying, she couldn't top what she had done. she had nowhere to go but down. and i think the combination of this kind of overwhelming thing, the somewhat autobiographical nature of what was written about and not to disappoint yourself let alone the other people out there waiting fo

[applause] mayor lee: thank you. should i stand up here, joe? is this right. ok. thank you out, everybody. at it is my pleasure to be here, to share with you what it has been like for the first quarter, maybe a third of this year, but also to begin by telling you this is a very unique city. and i continue to be so enthralled by the wonderful people who live here, that work here, even though i finished the ninth of tin budget town hall meetings, numerous meetings with community-based agencies, inviting people who have not been there for years, as they tell me. i am hearing so many stories, stories about white people came to san francisco. and just -- about why people came to san francisco. and just so many stories about whether or not their dreams or conditions were fulfilled, or they are here working were living with their families or they are trying to conduct business here. it has been wonderful. a lot of people have been asking -- i really -- to i really enjoy it? the word " julyenjoy -- "enjoy" is a little strong. i set out on a commitment t
