welcome to my home in the pacific palisades. i designed and built my modern home on this private lot, which is very close to the city. it was very important for this house to be modern but not too ultra modern. so i soften the look and feel of it by putting linears throughout the house. we are viewing the formal living area, which i love very much. and it is because of its sheer volume and its openness. with the touch of a button, the doors open up and you have a nice inside and outside living space. i custom-designed the whole house, including this bar which is in the heart of the living/entertainment section. it has been built out of african mahogany. actually, all the woodwork throughout the home is made out of african mahogany, too. next we have a cool game room, which has a pool table and a decorative tile fireplace. the dual fireplace separates the dining area from this gourmet kitchen, which is open and very light. another unique feature of my home is the partition which is totally different than the traditional hallways.

today's fourth of july parade on mcarthur boulevard in the palisades neighborhood of northwest washington. and today more than 24,000 people became u.s. citizens in 350 ceremonies and that includes 100 people in mt. vernon. brittany morehouse talks to one mother who serving in the military. helping wounded warriors is one of the many reasons why she's proud to be an american. >> well i came to the united states about seven years ago. and i always wanted to enter the u.s. military. >> patriotism was in her blood before she became a u.s. citizen. >> one nation, under god. >> and both of carline's children were born in the u.s. >> i'm glad because of the freedom and opportunities that are there for them, you know, and i guess now i'm a part of that. i am very excited. >> and so are they. >> i'm happy she's an american now. >> an american wearing a navy uniform. > we're the ones that take care of the wounded warriors, the retired veterans and we are on the battlefield also. > wingate lives in leesburg, but stationed in bethesda. it was her one year anniversary of the joining the military. >>

in fact, we took a field trip to pacific palisades, and we were taking the 10 freeway right no the pacific ocean and everyone stopped talking. they saw the beauty of the ocean, and they just stopped talking. they just stopped their conversation all the way. so this is such a great opportunity for us to be able to go beyond the pacific ocean but over to china. thank you so much. >> hal, thank you so much. i'll ask hal because i was talking to your wife about this, your commitment to education on a number of levels. but why the choir? what was it that struck you, too, especially? i know i got some insight from her about your commitment to education and inner city development as well. >> well, my wife and kid have volunteered and been involved in inner city education, but just to see them left out when the rest of the kids were going over, they couldn't be left out. i think it's so important in this global economy we live in, they see not only what their future competitors are going to be here in the united states and what they need to be successful but also in china. you know, it's a country
