i want to start this talk by focusing on haiti. which might seem like an unusual place to start talk about american history. but i would argue that without understanding haiti we cannot understand the history of louisiana or the south. now, i think today when we think of haiti, we think about the images you see on television of the horrible poverty and devastation from natural disasters that have taken place there, but in 1791, through the early -- through the beginning of then 19th century, haiti was beacon of hope, beacon of liberty, for enslaved people to cross the new world. that's because starting in 1791, slaves on the island of haiti, which at the time was -- you can think of sugar as the oil of that time and haiti as the saudi arabia of the day. the most lucrative commercial point, fueled the entire economy of france and that was basically driven off slave labor in haiti. there were tens of thousands of slaves on the island. mere thousands of white planters who governorred the island and it was a very combustible environmen

we came see a foot of rain in haiti. this is a slow moving storm. it's been inching along last night. this is not what you want to see for an area that that's as impoverished as this island. as far as the forecast goes, we still have to watch south florida and the bahamass. things are looking more encouraging emily will turn away from south carolina and florida, so your forecast has improved but anyone along the florida east coast, the storm should be closest to you come sun up saturday and all during the day saturday, probably wind and rain. but then the storm should hook and curve away from the eastern seaboard. so right now it looks like possibly florida's problem on saturday. and that will be about it. not a huge hurricane or anything, so just a rainy, gloomy day, which by florida standards and because of the drought would tually be welcome. yesterday this was off the charts. we've been talking about a hot summer. we were 114 degrees in little rock. it was hotter than phoenix, arizona at 111. this 114 w the hottest temperature ever in little roc

haiti may get the worst of it as far as heavy rains in the days ahead. so here's the new forecast just out from the national hurricane center. two things we like to avoid. storms going into the gulf of mexico because the water is extremely warm and then it usually does hit the u.s. we like it to curve out to sea into the open atlantic. this storm will be interesting because it has to go first through the mountainous terrain of hispaniola. there's tall mountains here. there's a chance that emily won't survive that. if it does survive, then it will have a chances to regenerate. the hurricane center right now thinks that they're going half and half, they think it could dissipate, it may survivsurvive. it will be close to florida or the bahamas. and then the cone of uncertainty through georgia and south carolina. so areas in the northeast need to pay close attention. the key time period will be in two days from now if it survives going over haiti. if it doesn't, we're all fine. if it does survive, we could have serious problems. here's what our computers are
