jason, these guys have an awfully dangerous job, no doubt about that. what was it like being in the war zone with them? >> you know, i should tell you, it was tense. it was really tense for a first-timer such as myself being out with these combat engineers. to put it in some perspective for your, randi, one report shows some 268 troops were killed by ieds last year. the combat engineer's job is to go out and find those bombs before they can do in harm. so we got a first-hand look on how they try to accomplish their mission. >> what we do is we make sure that our route is cleared before we step off. >> reporter: on mission with combat engineers in a remote area of southern afghanistan. these soldiers hunt for ieds, those roadside bombs insurgents use to injure or kill. >> they watch us and wait to see what we do, and then they act. >> reporter: but they also search for the people who plant them. on this particular day, it wasn't long before they found both. >> they came out positive for some of the compounds that we think could be involved in suspicious

jason, what a ride it has been for investors today. >> reporter: absolutely, grace. my neck hurts from all the wall street whiplash. we surged out of the gate up 170 on the job report for the dow. then it fell as much as 230 before staging a comeback on word out of italy that they are going to institute new reforms for their finances which could attract bond buying from european central bail to avoid a bailout. spain is also a big issue. that sent the dollar lower against the euro and helped the stock market but in the final hour of trading it's weakening quite a bit. the dow at the moment is up only by 25 points. after yesterday, we'll certainly take that when the dow lost more than 500. nasdaq has been having a tough go of it all day down 32. s&p lower by 4. the nasdaq real admitting hit hard by san jose network gear maker brocade communications. it's going to miss its revenue forecast for the prior quarter. its shares are down almost 30%. it's a sign that business investment might be starting to weaken and that obviously have an impact on the stock market. >> well

we'll go to jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. jason, what trying heard it rebound? >> reporter: absolutely crazy ride over the last few sessions, hasn't it been? we get these big drops of several hundred points followed by big gains of a few hundred points. now we are entering the witching hour for the stock market, the final hour. we'll see if we end up with a smashed pumpkin or a glass slipper. hoping for the glass slipper. there are a number of factors leading to today's gain all sparked on the uncertainty. today coming from some good words from the labor department on jobless claims below 400,000 for the first time in four months. it's approaching a territory that indicates job growth. we need to see it further lower but at least it's in the right direction. the key will be stringing this out and turning it into a trend. if we are over 400,000 next week, the market won't be excited. we need more than one report to feel better about the economy. reports out of europe, european regulators might enact a temporary ban on short selling particularly spain and italy. t

this could be, what, thursday, friday, monday, three days in a row, jason? >> reporter: hard to believe after the week we had, to think that we're basically on par in the stock market with where we started last week. we've had three straight winning sessions. today really getting a big boost from the merger and acquisition activity, investors love that kind of news. we have two, google and motorola for $12.5 billion, and assuming it gets regulatory approval which would be pretty tough but time-warner buying insight communication for 3 billion. and positive moves for all of that for the stock market. and as far as google goes, this is not just google getting into hardware, there are a lot of fallout from a deal like this. by getting into hardware, with its android system, google does risk losing some of its android partners like samsung and hvc. they may be forced to look elsewhere and that is giving microsoft a boost because microsoft windows mobile may have greater exposure against android and apple ios. and black berry maker are research in motion is watch

but here now to talk about it jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. good morning, jason. we better do better than yesterday, that's for sure. >> reporter: good morning, frank and grace. there really hasn't been much in the way of good news for wall street outside of corporate earnings, which once again have been very strong. but the economy is a severe problem. number of indicators have shown that with weak manufacturing, personal spending, 2nd quarter gdp. the jobs report on friday not expected to show a lot but adp which tracks private payrolls says 114,000 jobs were created was month. but what adp says is usually rozier than what the labor department reports two days rater. the unemployment rate staying at 9.2%. even with 114,000 jobs it doesn't take in government cuts that's still woefully short of what's needed to chew away into unemployment. we need about 250 to 300,000 jobs create each month to help out there. stock market falling for all sorts of reasons yesterday. the economy, uncertainly about the debt deal and still the possibility of a credit downgrade for the
