kimberly tere, nbc bay area news. >>> a grass fire slowed down the commute on 101 tonight. it started near the cesar chavez. crews were able to get the upper hand quickly. the usual crawl slowed even more. no word on the cause of the fire. there are some homeless encampments in the area. >>> a painful night in the east bay for the family of a 3-year-old boy killed in a drive by shooting. police say he was caught in the cross fire between rival gang members last week. two men are under arrest in connection with the killing. lawrence denard is the suspected gunman. willie torrence is the suspected getaway driver. torrence was arrested friday night after getting information from the police department which credits the public for getting them leads. >> it was very challenging in the beginning. i got to say that most of the information we received are from citizens who were just distraught and sick to their stomach about what they knew happened. >> police say torrence was on parole when he was arrested. detectives have not yet recovered the car or the gun used in the shooting. >

kimberly tere has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: we just talked to oakland police just minutes ago who say this investigation is moving rapidly forward but stopped short of confirming any arrests of been made yet. they say operations are going on in places in alameda county and outside of alameda county and that the u.s. marshals and other agencies are now involved in this investigation. police say they are confident this case will be wrapped up soon and the suspects brought to justice. meantime, a memorial continues to grow out here at 65th and international for the 3-year-old who was in his stroller yesterday when he was shot and killed. just days ago, 3-year-old carlos fernandez nava said something to his mother that she says unnerved her. >> translator: a week ago he said mommy, i'm going to die. and i said don't say that. so i didn't want to let him out because i feared that he could be run over or something. >> reporter: it was far worse. yesterday just after 1:00 p.m. he was killed in a drive-by shooting, struck by a stray bullet. he was with his parents headed t
