primary bid against rick perry. >> laura: they were against him and for kay lay -- bayly. >> laura: you pick sides and do what you do. you can't be surprised if perry is annoyed by that or frankly if bush is annoyed bush is criticizing him. now we find out that jeb bush is very encouraging to someone like a paul ryan, that paul ryan should get into the race. jeb bush was thinking 2016 according to some sources. now jeb bush encouraging ryan according to steve hayes at the "weekly standard" fox news contributor. that also adds a level of intrigue into this. >> yeah. if those reports are true, laura, it would spell a kind of a death nail death nell. whatever his intentions with the karl roves and the tony frattos and tony wieners. perry wants to be able to tap into the bush donor network. >> laura: money. >> if is he urging other people to run it could mean that perry will have a tough time accessing that money. >> laura: that money needs to be shaken down from the trees. thanks a lot for the reporting. >> thank you, laura. >> laura: when we come back, president obama promises to lay out

i'm laura garcia-cannon. a young boy's fighting for his life this morning after being hit by a wrong way driver in san francisco. it happened last night at mission street and new montgomery. christie smith joins us live from hayward where police eventually caught up with the suspect. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. witnesses describe a horrible scene of a driver in a truck hitting a 9-year-old boy who was trying to cross the street with his family. hitting other cars and speeding off. the truck had major front end damage. that's one of the things that alerted police in hayward overnight to a similar truck. san francisco police brought over witnesses who believe it is the same truck involved in the hit and run last night. we're told that 9-year-old boy is from philadelphia and had just gone with his family to see a giants game. he was taken to sf general where we are told he has life threatening injuries. reporting live in hayward, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> let's hope he's okay. th

. >> reporter: good morning, laura. most of us have experienced this before, you're walking into a grocery store, like a safeway and you you approached by a petitioner, somebody asking you for a signature. safeway wants to put a stop to this, they are serious about it. tailing to take some of the worst offenders, they are fitting back. about two dozen political petition signature gatherers protested safeway's crackdown saying the corporation is disrupting their free speech rights. saying safeway -- it says that the petitioners don't follow corporate policies, they block enchances and harass customers so safe way is taking action. in some cases there are injunctions. in those cases this could be settled in court. i just hung up the phone with the organizer of the protesters and he tells me it's an intimidation factor on behalf of safeway. he says you know what, though. it's not going to work. these petitioners are going to be out. he says the next step for them is to start a letter writing campaign to the bar association

and in chicago, laura washington, columnist for the chicago "chicago sun-times." as you look at this right now, you look at the pictures of the president, do you think chicago really prepared him adequately for this job in washington? >> in many ways, to be a chicago politician is to be prepared for anything. the world comes to chicago and you learn how to deal with it. as i've reflected on it over the past few months, there are two things that might have upgraded against him. there's only one side of the aisle. it's an intense political atmosphere, but it's a hot house from liberal democrats. i don't think he has the experience in dealing with the other side of the aisle. secondly, in many ways, even more importantly, with the exception of one congressional race he lost, he's lived a charmed political life, he's really been very important in his choice of opponents. he's been elected against great odds, but in the ensd, rather easily. he's never really been electorally in a tough race he lost. and there are lessons that way. and i think we might see in some of th

in brentwood, laura anthony, abc7 news. . a young boy is honored a as hero for his action at a pool on monday. the 8-year-old was presented with a plaque and treated to a ride on a san jose fire truck yesterday. he is being rewarded for jumping in a pool at an apartment complex to help save a 3-year-old girl who was drowning with her grand far. >> i wasn't scared. i just jumped in. >> he pushed the little girl to safety as the two neighbors helped her grandfather. the neighbors pumped on the girl and grandfather's chest until paramedics arrived. the little girl is doing fine. we're told the grandfather is hospitalized in serious condition but definitely jumped in to save a life. he said he wanted to be a software engineer when he grows up but there is a job on the fire department. >> riding on the fire truck could have changed his mind. every little guy's dream. >> this morning, remember the wind shield wipers may need action. >> grab the steering wheel with both hands. breezy this morning. coming up on 4:52. we have temperat

. >> i want to bring in laura howe. laura, it's good to see you. >> it's been a day of preparing for earthquakes and hurricanes here. i think as bob said, none of us were used to feeling earthquakes, so, you know, i think we were all pretty surprised by it as well. >> you saw here in new york and a lot in d.c. people running for the streets. they were trying to get out of the buildings. is that the smart thing to do, though? >> that's an okay thing to do once the shaking stops. what we always recommend is for people to drop, cover and hold on. that means you get under a nice sturdy table, and hold on until the shaking stops. there's lots of myths about getting in doorways or running out immediately, but the fact is you want to cover yourself while the shaking is happens. you don't want to be injured by flying debris. but nottent after that shaking stops. so i think we all tried to get out of the building after that happened, and we evacuated our buildings here as well, but we all hit the ground and went under tables imm
