texas governor rick perry leads the pack. mr. perry has 29% support. mitt romney drops down to 18%. 15% remain undecided and michele bachmann comes in with 13%. since announcing over the weekend, mr. perry has had some tough words for washington starting with fed chairman ben bernanke. >> is this guy prints more money between now and the election, i don't know what you all would do to him in iowa. but we would treat him pretty ugly. printing more money to play politics at this particular time in american history is almost treason oust in my opinion. >> mr. perry raised some eyebrows with these comments about the president. >> laura: bill o'reilly talked to don imus this morning about the governor. >> speaking of rick perry, is he for real? >> bill: yeah, oh yeah. absolutely viable contender. nice economic story to tell in texas. and you know, you know he is for real when the "new york times" attacks him, which they did 13 seconds after he announced calling him some kind of fascist and all of that. so, yeah, he certainly is a viable contender. >> joinin

mr. perry is more conservative than mr. romney and he often uses spirit in his presentations. mr. romney is running as america's ceo. a man who has succeeded in private business and who knows how to handle the free marketplace. governor perry is pretty much running on that as well showcasing texas economic success story. the truth is that both romney and perry have many things in common. including good hair both them would offer a challenge to barack obama. at this point it's gobble to say which man has the most going for him even though governor perry leads in the polls he is untested in debate and americans don't know him very much. governor romney has big name recognition but many are suspicious of him not popular in republican primaries. the perry romney battle is a toss-up and could go either way depending on how the candidates perform in the upcoming debates. as they like to say in texas. there will be a high noon between these two men. a verbal shootout that will leave just one standing. and that's the memo. now for the top story tonight. let's bring in the aforementioned c

james, karl rove has been somewhat publicly negative toward mr. perry. can carl robe bring governor perry down? >> he's going it try. he's not on the team. and he thinks perry's gone too far to the right. but you know, they -- >> wait a minute, karl rove thinks rick perry has gone too far to the right? >> yeah, yeah. because if you say the things rick perry is saying he is saying in the primary process and you get too far right, it is difficult for the main stream to embrace you. that's what karl is suggesting. but it is more than that. their love affair ended in the early 90s when there was an opening in the u.s. senate seat. >> oh, so this is person. what happened? >> rick wanted the senate seat and perry gave it to kay bailey hutchison. rick was in a tough race against john sharp and rick wanted to go negative but karl wouldn't let him because he wanted to run up the numbers to make bush look presidential. then what happened, the last thing that happened, is karl ran kay bailey hutchison's race against perry to unseat him in the primary. there is no l

this is rick perry republican presidential candidate day one. the next day mr. perry being a presidential candidate, of course, went to iowa. this, the interweb will forever record is rick perry, presidential candidate, day two. he's answering a question about social security here. >> look, the whole issue of -- have you read my book "fed up"? get a copy. read it. it is, because i talk about the entitlement programs in there. >> have you red my book "fed up"? governor perry released a book in november, as in november nine months ago. the book was meant to introduce him on the national political stage. it was one of the first big hints he might be running for president this year. if you do want to know what rick perry thinks about entitlement programs there "fed up" will give you an earful, or eyeful, whatever. quote, certain of these programs massively altered the relationship between americans and their government violently tossing aside any respect for limited government. by far the best example of this is social security. social security, rick perry is saying

they're popular subjects for republican primary voters, but if mr. perry does get -- if governor perry does get the nomination he'll have to do a lot of scrambling to get back to the middle where he will not get votes from independents. these are extreme view snoops that's what i wanted to ask you about because he is emerging about one week in, is that the real risk here is alien eighth the independents that will not bring them in under the tent. >> rick per se a big personality, a colorful figure and in the field that's been lacking someone who is colorful and has a record and he's the longest-serving governor in the country and these kind of remarks i don't think women will gravitate to them and i think independents are not looking for views that satisfy the extreme right of the republican party. he's very reminiscent of former president george w. bush, but he's even more swaggering than bush was, and i thought the country went the opposite direction with president obama. i don't know if the voters as a whole are ready to go back to the texas image

actually, mr. perry's entrance into the race may be a good thing, because it will get more people focused on this case, and i think if you looked at the totality of the case, there's plenty of other evidence besides the forensic evidence demonstrating willingham was in fact guilty. as far as stonewalling the investigation, a forensic negotiation exceeding its jurisdiction and it's appropriate they were reined in to what the texas law permits it to do. i don't think that's really a case of stonewalling. >> governor perry does appear to approve of the execution of mentally retarded criminals. also juveniles. he thinks the juveniles should be executed as well. does that take him outside of the norm of what most americans think is just? >> no, i don't think so. i mean, the law at the time of these cases was that the minority status of the person as well as any mental deficiencies could be considered by the jury. must be considered by the jury. all the evidence can be presented to the jury and the jury

you know mr. perry a bit. there is something about him, is it the fact that he is very texan that has attracted a lot of people? >> i think so. i think i was always struck by the extent to which the rest of the country is attracted to texas and texas politicians. >> steve: things are big there! >> things are big there. and it is different. i was a citizen of texas for five years when i was running halliburton, enjoyed it very much. but there is a different feel to it. it's the west, the strong sense of independence, and a little bit of arrogance maybe. >> brian: or confidence. >> those of us from wyoming think we're a little arrogant, too. >> gretchen: i loved living in texas, too. let's talk about afghanistan 'cause that was a huge part of you when you were vice president. august was the deadliest month for us over there. i'm interested in your thoughts about these trigger effects that may go into effect with pentagon cuts if the super committee cannot come up with $1.5 trillion in cuts. your response to that
