pakistan -- i always maintained pakistan can do without the aid, but what pakistan needs is good, positive, constructive relationships with the united states. we have tried hard to have market access, etc.. but nothing came out of that. finally, the question of whether this is a transactional strategy, i would say if you look at the size of pakistan and you look at conventional and unconventional military capabilities, it's in a region where the united states has stakes and basically, this relationship has a strategic quality to itself. given all the problems i have mentioned, there is the question of how it should be managed. one can discuss in greater detail, but what i feel is that this relationship has to be managed and delivered on the basis of realism and frankness. it is an important relationship for pakistan and i think it's important for the united states for all the reasons i have mentioned. it's not just the question of the stabilization of afghanistan. there is an opportunity because stabilization be -- stabilization depends on reconciliation. for reconciliation, there are only

i couldn't face writing pakistan. afghanistan for some reason was easy for me to write and i could not face writing pakistan. it was just this writer's block. i was writing around the half of the book that dealt with pakistan or only writing the funny bits, and then i went to visit my mother for ten days over christmas, which is a great way to write a book, because you realize that you have an excuse to get away from your mother for half the day, you know, because at least my mother likes to talk about feelings and emotions and things like that. so, i would take half the day and i would write the book, and then i would come and i would read it to her. and that -- i wrote all of pakistan in those ten days. i wrote about 5,000 words a day. it was all inside me waiting to come out and i kind of needed my mom around almost to hold my hand and to walk me through it. she didn't know any -- my parents did know any of the stuff i went through because you're protecting them. so i was really difficult for her as well to hear ev

i also wanted to ask the role of pakistan. pakistan is a key regional actor in central asia. right now our relationship with pakistan is complicated. pakistan is obviously an important player in terms of regional stability in central asia. can you describe the -- how the pressler amendment has affected our relationship with pakistan? and how do you feel the united states needs to interact currently with pakistan and in the future? how do you feel we should use the aid as a weapon of influence based on the current relationship that we have now with pakistan? >> yeah, thank you, senator. i think pakistan is an enormously important country in the central command area of operations. in fact, when i was the acting commander, i considered it to be among probably the top one or two countries to be addressed. and we've had as you described it yourself, a very complex relationship with them. i think it's one we need to stick with. and to your point about the pressler amendment. that was a period in our history where we made a determination that we had such stark differences with pakis
