the epicenter was in the east bay hills near san leandro. the quake hit about 11:36 last night with smaller aftershocks about 5 minutes later. >> anne makovec is in menlo park at usgs headquarters. we didn't feel it. did you? >> reporter: no. a lot of people were sleeping. i slept right through it. it happened at 11:36. and it was a pretty small earthquake. a lot of people making fun here on the west coast about what they were talking about on the east coast everybody was freaking out about what had happened there and then we have an earthquake that's much smaller than what they had and everybody still concerned about it. we saw a lot of posts from people on facebook and twitter who did feel it overnight centered in the east bay. let's look at the seismograph from last night. it was centered three miles from san leandro, 3.6 magnitude but it was felt from danville to san francisco even up to marin. according to the u.s. geological survey it was between 5 and 9 miles deep. then there was an aftershock 2.3 magnitude about 5 minutes later. now,

about 3 miles from san leandro. according to the u.s. geological survey it had a depth between five to nine miles and then there was an aftershock, 2.3 magnitude, about 5 minutes later. this one was obviously significantly smaller than the earthquake in virginia yesterday. it was a 5.8. the strongest quake to hit that region in decades. according to scientists here, there's a couple of differences in the region that makes the earthquakes themselves different. one of them is the plates underground. here on the west coast we have a lot of plates underground. we are o.j. verge of several of them clanking into each other. the east coast is one big plate. the other difference is the climate. >> the earth is hotter in california than the east coast and when the earth is hot, the seismic energy doesn't travel away from the earthquake fault nearly as far. >> records he says. >> reporter: the virginia quake didn't have many aftershocks. based on the fault's history it probably won't lead to another big one anytime soon. facebook and twitter blowi

a man was shot on 159th avenue in unincorporated san leandro. then a car was stopped at i- 580. allie rasmus joins us live to explain how the two crime scenes are related. >> reporter: well, it all started here on east 14th street and 159th avenue in unincorporated san leandro. around 4:45, deputies say a man was shot as he ran out of this driveway here behind us. now, this driveway goes back to a home and a backyard that's set off from the front of the street, a short time ago, we got a closer look of what was in the back yard of that home -- that home. this is what the gunman was after, marijuana plants in the back yards of the home. but the owner of the plants, the man who lives here, had a security system in place. >> well, the alarm that he had set up near his marijuana plants was a great aid in letting him know someone was there. >> reporter: a sign warns there's also security cameras here. the man who rents this house chased the marijuana thief down the driveway and shot him. neighbors heard the gunfire. >> four or five gunshots. >> reporter: and then what happened? >> an
