>> i don't think you can learn how to be steve jobs. steve jobs is singular. there will never be anybody like him. he is the closest thing the business world has to a super hero. i don't think anybody would deny that. in terms of the marketing flair, i don't think tim cook needs to have that, to steer the company in the right direction. i think with apple, it's about the products. and that's where the question of, you know, innovation, can he replace steve jobs in terms of innovation. the management structure at apple is actually pretty simple. there's a lot of people that report directly to steve jobs. there isn't a whole lot of dotted lines and mishmash. it's pretty direct there. it's also famously brutal. so the people that are there at the company are there for a reason. so i think that, you know, we can expect more great things from apple. but there's no question that apple is steve jobs. and this company is about to change. >> pretty dramatically i would imagine. tim cook presumably will have a salary slightly higher than steve jobs' $1 a year, what he t

steve jobs stepping down as ceo of apple. joe, is this a surprise, lots of speculation about steve jobs' future because of his health? what's your view? >> the only real surprise is that it happened tonight, really. he's been sick for a long time. he has not looked well, obviously, in appearances recently. everybody he's had a liver transplant, a tumor on his pancreas. so his health, one assumes has been deteriorating, and there is a certain kind of sad inevidentability to this moment. >> obviously apple's become this extraordinary global business. one of the biggest market caps of any american companies in history. what impact will steve jobs standing down as the chief executive officer have on the company, do you think, if any? >> well, steve jobs is one of the great innovators in the history of modern capitalism. he's also one of the genius marketers. with ways of getting people to get interested in and buying products, that nobody -- we haven't seen in a long time. apple is going to miss that, without question. and the re

in terms of steve jobs, how would you describe him? this guy's tough to work for -- demanding and very perfectist, correct? >> absolutely. i mean, that is legendary as far as how much of a perfectionist he is. look at the products he gets out of it. extraordinary products that they can sell at a premium. the average laptop coming out of apple is far more expensive than anything else. and then of course look at everything that everybody's tried to do with tablets, copying apple. he got it right the first time, and the most amazing thing about steve jobs is he seems to know what it is we want before we know we want them. like the ipad. that sort of culture, if he can -- if he's infuseded that into apple, then apple will at least in the short term, the next five, seven years, be just fine. >> right. so he is stepping down as ceo, but it sounds like he's still going play a role with apple. how important is that for apple's stability and success in the future? >> i think it is very important. and we don't know day to day exactly how often s

now we have the steve jobs resignation. easy to lose sight that the markets in the last three or four days have actually been performing pretty well, coming sharply off their lows that we've seen in recent weeks. here in asia, another update for the asian markets ads well, getting a lot of tail winds at the moment from better than expected, that's right, better than expected economic data coming out of the u.s. who would have thought that. we had terrible numbers. both of those were a little bit unexpected after some truly dreadful numbers we've seen in the u.s. now we see better than expected numbers. that's helping investors on this side of the world, pretty much everywhere, not just in asia. the shanghai comes up 3%. but pretty much good gapes all around, nina. >> i'll bet ipad is on durable goods, andrew. even if they do cost a pretty penny. let's look at how u.s. markets stand in terms of the futures. this is how we're looking at the moment. it seems though broadly speaking we're seeing a little bit of upward momentum

and as steve jobs quits as chief executive of apple, we assessed the company. let's get back to this attrition in libya. this doctor has been working in a number of hospitals in tripoli. he tells me about his experiences. >> i have been to three or four of the hospital's around central tripoli and some of the urban areas as well. most of these hospitals were the private hospitals, which have been opened up for all civilians. the owners of the hospitals have opened up the hospitals to a few casualties and to get medical treatment for anyone that needs it. they are quite stretch at the moment and relying very heavily on volunteer doctors. there is a shortage of staff, particularly nurses. it is medical support staff rather than actual doctors. i went to the main hospital very briefly, which housed one of the biggest emergency departments. the scene at the emergency department is quite chaotic. there are injuries -- you know, injured civilians and allies there every minute, perhaps. some patients have very horrific wounds. and they are inside that department. ther
