the navy does a lot of training for war fighting. one thing they do is shoot torped torpedos, drop sensors. sometimes they end up on the ocean. so how do you recover them? >> we have gus here. he's almost ten years old. he's a trained mark 5 animal. he can dive up to depths of 1,000 feet. we are just going to do a deck demo here and show you what we do under water. >> reporter: gus is taught to pull on the cable to make sure he's made a secure connection. then you reel it in? >> go get it. >> reporter: he can recover up to 40 items per day. >> water! >> reporter: his buddy joe is so well trained even i could recover a test object. joe just made me look good. he did everything we talked about. now he gets a little reward. the navy trained sea lions to use clamps to recover not just objects but people. i got in the water one last time to sea how sea lions can conduct swimmer interdiction. the result -- the same as the dolphin. caught, but with a twist. a clamp that attaches to my leg. reeled me in like a fish. he caught me like a bear

i was fresh out of the navy. i had done seven years in the navy. i was working for a fortune 500 company in the suburbs. there's a knock on my door and it is the police. a white woman had been sexually assaulted by a black male. i am the only one in this high rent complex. i am also in the army reserves. on top of that, i am a college they knock -- i am a psychologist didn't. then knock on my door and i think, it cannot be me. they said to give them my clothes. take it. i can help you in any way i can. not a problem. they came back and said, come down, we want to talk with you. i said, no problem. i went down there and they took my photo i.d. from my job and said that the woman identified your photograph. i am the only one in the photographs line up with a necktie on. i am the only one who could afford to stay there where i work. to make a long story short, i found myself indicted in front of a jury that convicted me with no evidence and i was just shocked. my mother hired an appellate attorney. he was telling me all the time that i was in cousin,

tell me about the navy seal team 6. what is it about this team that would be brought in on a mission like this? >> well, more will emerge over the coming days, i'm sure. as the military does an affirmative action review. we'll find out were there ac gunships in support, where were the apache support helicopters and why were so many on one helicopter. i assume it was a high value target. some reporting is it was a bomb-maker. but there are 10,000 some odd special troops in afghanistan. they bear a disproportionate burden in this extremely dangerous war. 15,000 nearly kildow and wounded u.s. troops so far in the conflict. >> you talk about it possibly being a high value target. 22 seal team members, a total of 30 u.s. service members. does that seem disproportionate or given the terrain, the cover of darkness, is that how many people you need to go after potentially one or two people? >> well, it's a small unit. you get on the ground and in the mountainous areas, the taliban are there in force. they are ferocious fighters

and welcome to the washington navy yard. our navy's oldest shore establishment. for those of you who don't know, this is a special place in american history. through war and through peace, sailors, civilians, naval architects and businessmen came together at the navy yard to build and repair america's fleets. here, opportunity was created and innovation rewarded. here was spent the great sweat and muscle of our overseas security. not far from where we gather, u.s.s. constitution, old ironside herself, was brought in for repairs during the war of 1812. the navy yard manufactured the mammoth 16-inch guns atop the decks of our world war ii battleships. and here, scientists and engineers fashioned the optical components that made possible the great accuracy of those guns. and so it is fitting indeed that the president announces a new initiative to put the muscle and intellect of a new generation of veterans to work again. many of these young people have served five, six, even seven tours in combat. some of them suffer from serious wounds, seen and unseen. all of them
