we're in orlando, florida tonight. texas governor rick perry was a frequent target tonight by his fellow presidential hopefuls and as you just heard, michelle bachmann called him out on an hpv-related order that he issued in the lone star state. joining me now to defend her state is michelle bachmann, how are you? >> good to see you again. >> sean: this is two debates where this is a pretty big issue for you. and you keep bringing it up with governor perry. what did you think of his answer that he thinks he made a mistake. he talked about opting out, opting in. what is your reaction? >> well, one thing we found out after governor perry gave his response, he said he did it because he talked to a woman then made the mandate after talking to this woman. we found out he didn't talk to her until after the mandate was put in to affect. so he gave us another false statement this evening. that is going to hurt the governor, i think. >> sean: you're referring to someone up here talking about it. i heard it. an abc news article?

some 3500 florida republicans gathering in orlando. that is where we'll soon hear from several of the g.o.p. presidential contenders and then the folks will cast their votes and they have a straw poll there and a pretty good indicator in the past of which republican wins the florida primary and goes on to win the republican nomination and watching it all, chief political correspondent, carl cameron live from the orange county convention center. hi, carl, great to see you. an exciting week in orlando with the debate and now, with the vote. we understand not all the candidates are there, but that they're campaigning around the country today. give us a rundown. >> sure, the two frontrunners in the polls and the two likely to do well in the straw poll and mitt romney and rick perry have departed. mr. perry in orlando, did talk to a room over 500 delegates. taking part in the convention, this is the fifth, for 20 years they've been doing this and can culminates with a straw poll. they haven't always at the presidency at the rpof events and

cnn reporter peter hamby joining us from orlando, florida. peter, why is the contest there, florida, florida, florida, considered so important? >> reporter: florida will be the state in the general election, no doubt next year, one of them, one of the major swing states. but the state republican primary will be pivotal. the candidates believe, people in florida believe it was for john mccain in 2008 when he defeated mitt romney and catapulted himself to presidency. presidency five is the name of the confab, a philly day event, started with a debate thursday night, a conference where they all spoke. today a straw poll where 3500 or so republican activists will cast a vote in the straw poll and pick for president. rick perry is the only candidate competing in the straw poll,

chris stirewalt is here in orlando as well. it seems as if rick perry may have read your power play where you write the following. the for romney hits perry on social security, the more republican primary voters who mostly agree with perry will be annoyed by this line of attack. so when perry was given an opportunity to respond. he tried to focus on president obama, then a few jabs with governor romney at the end. do you think he's reading "power play"? >> i think what you are seeing right now -- you called it sparring, and this is like before a heavyweight prize fight that the could combatants are sizing each other up and looking for each other's vulnerabilities. perry's people are making it plain. here come some knockout jabs when they come after romney tonight. he has taken his licks in the first two debates. now in this third debate he's coming back at romney. romney wants to look presidential, wants to make perry look like he's too extreme so he will look have a cooler performance and those two will collide with each other

in the meantime as jon said, to orlando. court recessing for lunch but not before the defense rested its case without defendant bob ward taking the stand. you might remember this name. bob ward is a millionaire developer accused of killing his wife back in 2009. his team deciding he won't testify and that didn't stop his emotional outbursts in court. steve harrigan is live in miami with more on this. steve? >> reporter: jenna, really doesn't come much of a surprise that bob ward did not choose to testify. that's because he has had two outbursts so far. one pounding on the table when his daughter was testifying. a second time shouting out in the courtroom that he did not in fact have a $10 million insurance policy on his wife. it was just a short time ago in court today that bob ward told the judge he would not testify in his own stwens. -- defense. >> do you wish to testify? >> no. >> do you understand that by choosing not to testify that the jury will be instructed that they can not in any way hold that against you? >> yes.

in orlando. are these people as mean as they sound when they play the audience in these republican tv shows? >> no, wean you're dealing with people one-on-one, they're not repeating what they're hearing in the debates. however, you'll hear from a lot of people privately, certainly from the campaigns privately, things like the let him die moment did not thrill anybody. things like what you saw last night with rick perry is a bit different. what chris said is exactly right. where basically you're describing something that's supposed to be a hardline issue for the republican base right now in very compassionate quote/unquote weak terms. immigration is a hot button issue here. it's not a huge surprise that debate crowd reacted that way to that. i think there were other moments that were a little more shocking in debates we've seen recently like the applause of the death penalty and so forth. >> let's listen to how mitt romney followed up at this today at the conservative political action conference i

we begin with orlando. all eyes on the political world today are on the two battleground states that could decide the 2012 presidential race. florida and ohio. first in florida, nine republicans gather in orlando tonight for the sixth presidential debate. the third in 15 days. and the third match-up between rick perry and mitt romney. the pressure for tonight's debate is clearly on perry whose debate performance last week in tampa was enough to worry some republicans. especially donors. already eyeing the general election. in case there was any doubt that we're going to see a slug fest tonight, yesterday the top two republicans did nothing but pummel each other. it started simply with a flurry of press releases. romney's campaign called perry governor sub zero, saying governor perry criticizes president obama for an economy that added zero jobs in august, yet texas added even fewer. perry's campaign shot back, rick perry's texas created more private sector jobs in the past two months than mitt romney's mass

we go straight to carl cameron live from orlando. talk about i guess we can say an upset, yeah? >> sure. absolutely. the georgia businessman, herman cain, clearly winning going away and it's an expression of his strong debate performance earlier this week, a raucous speech at the political conference that took place here yesterday, and again, rallying the crowd today behind basic core conservative common sense principles, and herman cain's victory clearly comes at the expense of texas governor rick perry. perry had invested a lot of time and mone in this straw poll and was widely considered to be the odds on front runner until he had his debate performance earlier this week in which he got very dinged up for his positions on illegal immigration, something which conservatives have a lot of disagreement. perry drops to second and didn't even get half of what herman cain did and he sees on his heels mitt romney, most of the national polls and statewide polls with the exception of new hampshire suggest that perry has a significant lead on mitt romney outside the margin of error. but

it's call the ongoing presidency five conference in orlando. our political reporter peter hanbury is in florida for us. peter, there's so many conferences to keep up with, but what's the importance of what's happening in orlando right now sfp. >> there's three debates down here, and today there's the presidency five straw poll which is a test of grassroots support here organized by the republican party of there are. so like you said earlier, this is a great chance for the presidential candidates to really come down here, drill down and meet some of the voters and the important republican activists who are going to really have a say in this primary, which has been decisive in the past in picking the republican president. it was for john mccain in 2008 over mitt romney, it cemented the nomination for mccain back then and it probably will this time, t.j., too. it's an important weekend here. >> did they make any news necessarily in some of the speeches they made in orlando? can we expect that or are we going to hear a lot of the more of the same?

harrigan in orlando with the latest on the story. steve? >> reporter: uma, the prosecution here in orlando set to prove that 63-year-old millionaire real estate developer bob ward took a revolveer two years ago in the master bedroom and held it 18 inches away in his wife's head, shot her point-blank and killed her with a single shot. the jury agreed with the assessment. here was the scene in court a few minutes ago. >> we the jury found the defendant guilty. >> reporter: second degree murder is what they were going after. this could mean a penalty of anywhere from 16 years to life for bob ward. the prosecution in its case relied heavily on a 911 tape. during the 911 call, bob ward said on five separate occasions, "i just shot my wife." his own words "too much t wordso recover. the defense tried to show diane ward was on drunk, on antidepressants and possibly suicidal but the jury did not buy it. we could see 16 years to life. sentencing is in november. >> uma: thank you for the update. we have just learned that prosecutors in italy plan to

this sensational trial has made big headlines in orlando, not just because of the twists in the case but also because of ward's bizarre behavior. during a jailhouse meeting with his sister-in-law and daughter, ward can be seen dancing and laughing, even pretending to take off his shirt at one point, and then there are exchanges like this one: >> there's money in the account for you to get stuff, there's all sorts of goodies, you can buy a bra, so i was thinking you'd enjoy that, and hemorrhoid cream, so i think that there's going to be of plenty taken care of. >> bizarre. first i want to correct something i said before we went into that piece. she wasn't shot five times. she told -- he told the dispatcher five times that he had shot his wife, okay? so she was only shot one time. joining me now is judge jeanine pirro, host of "justice with judge jeanine ". so they claim he essentially confessed when he made that 911 call to shooting her and they cite statements like she's dead, she's done, i'm sorry. you say this guy might actually get acquitted. >> you know, it's very interesting, be

it's the orlando international airport. a man named jose perez is working as an ins inspector in secondary screening. off of a flight from london steps muhammad khatani. he claims that he can't speak english and he's assigned to mr. perez, who would later tell the 9/11 commission "that guy just gave me the creeps." so he gave him the hairy eyeball treatment as we would say in philly, and there was something that rubbed him the wrong way. that's why an interrogation ensued. against the advice of his colleagues, melendez perez says i'm not letting this guy in the united states. i think he's up to no idea. so he puts him on an airplane back out of the country. and this guy who can't speak english, in schwarzenegger like fashion, says "i'll be back." then comes september 11, three months later khatani is captured, captured fighting with bin laden. and because there had been a fingerprinting in orlando, they i.d. this guy and say there's more to this guy. he tried to get into the united states a month in advance of september 11.

cnn political reporter peter hamby is in orlando for us. peter, how unexpected was this? >> it was very unsuspeexpected g into today, don. things started to shift in the middle of the day once we started talking to some of these activists who participated in the straw poll here in orlando. and it seems that perry kind of turned off a lot of people during his debate the other night. some of the party activists here had questions about his record on illegal immigration. so a lot of people's second choice was herman cain. it's hard to find a republican than doesn't like herman cain. they might not think he's qualified to be president but they like herman cain. so you know, when perry kind of makes people unsure about him during the debate, people might be parking their support with herman cain as they kind of figure out am i with perry, am i with romney or somebody else. it was pretty sacrificing and the reaction of the crowd in the room i got to tell you was he can static. people here were definitely for herman cain. no doubt about that. >> you know, you like a lot of peopl
