we're in shanksville, pennsylvania for the first event to mark the horrors, but also in so many cases the heroic nobility of september 11, 2001. ten years ago tomorrow. shanksville, pennsylvania, now a place of history because here where we are today for this day of remembrance, is the crash site of united airlines flight 93. the jet liner had left newark that morning a decade ago, headed for san francisco. there were 33 passengers aboard. seven crew members. they numbered among them true american patriots who, getting word upon what happened that day, stormed the cockpit. we're live in downtown shanksville in front of the volunteer fire department. the memorial, itself, for flight 93 is a mile up the road. it's been closed for the past couple hours, closed to the public and the media so family members who traveled here, family members of those who died on flight 93 are able to get for many of them their first up close look of the new phase one of the permanent memorial. we were able to see part of that permanent memorial, however, earlier. a couple prominent features you'll notice is a welcome center then a long black granite wall that will take visitors really to within a few yards of the actual impact site. a place now called sacred ground marked by a 17 ton boulder that's been placed there. there is a white wall with the names of the passenger and crew of flight 93. that isn't going to be unveiled to the public until tomorrow's dedication. also in that wall there is actually a gate, a gate that leads to sacred ground and only family members of those who died on flight 93 will be allowed through that gate. >> coming here on th

now this morning's ceremony caps off a week of reflection and attributes in shanksville. president obama and the first lady placed a wreath at the memorial there. they also viewed the wall of names. 40 marble slabs inscribed with names from those aboard flight 93. many surviving relatives still live here in the bay area. they say the ceremonies have been deeply personal knowing the pennsylvania field is the final resting place for their loved ones. now the country's second largest memorial for flight 93 is here in the bay bay area. coming up in ten minutes the special connection that mourners say they have with the victims. >> there is jittery nerves over another september 11th style attack lead to several disruptions over the weekend. two fighter jets escorted an american airlines flight from l.a. to new york yesterday. that was after crew members noticed three passengers making repeated trips to the bathroom. a denver flight was escorted by f-16s. three passengers on that flight was detained. >> i started noticing something when the pilot said don't move very stern. >>

laura ingle is live in shanksville. tell us about the dedication ceremony today. >> reporter: good afternoon. it was the emotional day that many did expect. we were expecting quite a bit of rain because it had been raining here, creating a virtual mud field here, behind us. but the sun came out. and gave everybody a very pleasant surprise today for today's ceremony. that really touched so many people. this is a long-awaited moment for family members of the united flight 93. for years, the people who have come here to pay their respects have been kept at a distance. hundreds of yards away on an overlook. the two questions that people ask when they come here to pay their respects is where did the plane go in the ground a how close can i get to pay my respects? today, they are going to get a lot closer. that will continue. i want to give you a live look at what is happening now. the public now getting a chance to look at the wall of names. that was unveiled and dedicated today, each passenger and flight crew members' names
