county police tell us a baltimore county officer accidentally fired a shot and hit a baltimore city officer in the arm. they said it was a through and through wound. basically, the bull lent went in and -- bullet went in and out the other side. you talk about the investigation into this. this started as a warrant. what happened from there? >> detectives were out here for part of an ongoing narcotics investigation, to serve a search warrant. once on scene they took one of the suspects outside. they restreefed about 2700 pounds of marijuana and $900 in currency. other law enforcement agencies made entry inside the home. the other person was an adult female. she was cooperative, safe and unharmed. at some point there was a discharge of a weapon. we believe that weapon was discharged from a baltimore county police officer who was part of that task force striking a baltimore city officer on the task force in the arm. that officer was taken to shock trauma. our criminal action division is investigating. >> reporter: tell us what they look for. you're not sure if it was one shot that was fired or

baltimore county police immediately closed off the roadway. they found that at least two vehicles had struck this teen. one vehicle striking the teen knocking it into the path of another vehicle. police have had the road shut down here. this is putty hill avenue, between wilson and harford road. for about the past two hours or so, conducting their investigation. the state medical examiner's office just responded to the scene. they're going to take the youth's body to the medical office for an autopsy. at this time, police have not released the identity as to the 15-year-old victim, pending notification of next of kin. baltimore county police continue to maintain a crime scene here as they continue their investigations. at least one of the two vehicles has been towed from the scene. back to you on tv hill. >> captain mike, thank you. and we will bring you an update tonight on eyewitness news at 6:00. >>> another developing story. police race after a suspect, waving a gun out his window. the chase through two counties in the city, ends in gunfir

>>> a major milestone for baltimore police. the big drop in the murder rate and what's behind the sudden decline. >>> hello everyone i'm vic carter. here is what people are talking about tonight. the city known for its highest murder rate is about to record the fewest homicides in 10 years. it's a big accomplishment for police who vowed they would decrease the numbers. >> reporter: 175 people were murdered in baltimore, if that number holds it'll be the lowest homicide in the city since the 1980s. christmas eve this cherry hill neighborhood the site of baltimore's 195th homicide. this year investigators aren't stretched to thin. with days to go less than 200 people have been killed in 2011, that's a drop from 219 this time last year and a far cry from 315 murders in 1993. since 2007 the murder rate has fallen in baltimore. last night police commissioner told wjz more work needs to be done. >> the goal is beyond the numbers because here's what we know. while the numbers have come down over the last four years, it hasn't changed

police in -- a police chase in baltimore county, baltimore city and anne arundel county ended with two officers firing their handguns. the driver they were in pursuit of would not stop. it all came to an end in north highland. apparently the suspect exited the vehicle with a gun pointed at his own head. officers rick -- officers ordered him to put down the gun and he refused and turned the gun on one of the officers. at that point, he was shot. he is in the hospital with minor injuries. a buyout deal will carry a lot of weight when the issue goes before the the commission for public approval. the governor claims it will improve energy resources and produce jobs. it requires up to 300 megawatts of energy built. >> several children testified before a congressional panel today, painting a bleak picture of what it is like for almost 2 million children in this country. >> a sixth grader from pennsylvania. >> we lost all her friends. i was afraid to get close to people because i knew that we had to move again. >> a high school student from florida. >> we had to read at the gas station at the

wjz is live at baltimore county police headquarters. and derek valcourt has the new information. >> reporter: police releasing some specifics about that fight that led the officer to use his pepper spray as many parents express their unhappiness with how the situation was handled. >> reporter: when a school police officer used pepper spray at chesapeake high school tuesday, several other students in the school got sick, including a pregnant danielle nicholson. >> my throat was starting to close up and my eyes were starting to water because i was getting a little hazy and dizzy. >> reporter: she and as many as 15 other students released. police saying it all started when two students wouldn't stop fighting. even after the officer and a teacher tried to physically break up the fight. >> our officers tried to physically struggle with the student on the ground. the officer warned him that pepper spray was going to be used if there was additional violence. and then the student then attempted to go after the first student again. >> reporter:

>> reporter: it has been a busy day for baltimore city and baltimore county police. the police in towson apparently trying to stop a car on york road, right in downtown towson. this occurred between chesapeake avenue and towson town boulevard, on york road. while trying to stop this vehicle in the foreground, it fled from police and then crashed into this taxicab, occupied by three elderly females. and the driver of the cab, of course. now, at this point, it's not known how serious the injuries are to anyone in the taxicab. the people that were inside of the car that fled from police, jumped out of the vehicle and ran. they were apprehended by baltimore county police here in the towson district. now, police do have york road closed in both directions between chesapeake and towson town, as they continue their investigation. apparently at least one suspect in custody for sure that we know about. another person of interest being detained. the folks that were inside the taxicab have been transported to local area hospitals. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you, captain m

it was a baltimore city man who did it at a number of locations. barry is live with details. >> police tell us they have arrested a 29-year-old man. as you mentioned, he is a former employee of goodwill. it is a crime spree that has shocked and surprised a lot of people. a gunman brazing -- brazenly going into stores. now,scott pettaway is charged with armed robbery and use of a handgun in commission of a crime of violence. these happen during business hours. some customers were not aware of what was happening until police were called. the robber would force employees and customers into an office and then take money from the cash register and the safe. richard pettaway is a suspect in least three of those robberies. >> we did determine he was an ex-employee of goodwill. he knew how they kept the money inside the store and what their operations were. that is why they were the easiest target to rob for him. >> now, he is a former employee of a store and he is being held without bail at the detention center. wbal-tv 11 news. >> thank you. harford coun
