i want to bring in rick klein now. and rick, as you know, we've been pouring over this poll all day. curious what you thought of the numbers tonight. voters were asked who their first choice is, second choice is. 43% say they're so convinced newt gingrich is not only their first but second choice, as well. 31% said as much as romney. so, what does it say to you about momentuomentum? >> reporter: it's all on gingrich's side. he's done something that's very hard to do in politics. he's turned around negative perceptions of himself and now he's dealing with a wider poll of voters who are willing to give him a shot. one other note from that poll, from the "register," gingrich came in second place on the question of most likely to have a scandal in the white house. behind only herman cain. >> just six days until the abc news debate, next saturday night. how crucial will their performances be, particularly gingrich and romney here? >> reporter: it has all the makings of a decisive moment this is the first time they will face

i want to bring in rick klein tonight, who was in that debate hall with all of us last night. rick, the bottom line tonight, who won, who lost? >> reporter: newt gingrich was the clear winner. he turned the target on his back right around. he still managed to come around as a grownup on the stage. and romney with a definite loser. he lost a chance to stop gingrich's momentum and worse, david, he committed the cardinal sin of debating. he delivered a line that became a punch line. >> as you know, a lot was riding on last night for other candidates, as well. people talking about the newest name to emerge last night, newt romney. >> if you look at newt romney, they were for obama care, principles, if you look at newt romney, they were for cap and trade if you look at newt romney, they were for the illegal immigration problem. >> and this went on throughout the night. do you think michele bachmann gained any traction with this, rick? >> reporter: she had her best debate in months if she can make this newt romney guy famous, you may see a break. if they are worried about them and s

let's turn to msnbc policy analyst ezra klein. ezra, let's go right to it. has president obama seen job creation since he's been in the oval office? >> let's go to the record. in 2009 he comes in, we lost 5 million jobs that year. it's hard to say that in obama's first year of office in a massive recession, that he deserves all the blame for that. most of his policies hadn't begun. in 2010 which is the first year you can fairly only partial i attribute to him. obviously the president isn't the only thing. we gained jobs. i don't think anybody would say the job creation is going at the pace we'd want it to, although i think i and others would argue because in part we have not had the cooperation from congress. to say he caused it is beyond a stretch. it simply is not true. >> the candidate romney says he wants to go out and make the case that president obama hasn't created jobs. and he has. a net of 100,000 when he was at bain. is that accurate? >> i don't know where that's coming from. bain is a private equity firm. he would borrow money against the assets o

and by the way, the advisers prevented joe klein and you from getting any access to romney for these pieces, right? >> that's true. and that's been their policy throughout, lawrence. nothing personal to me or to joe. but instead their view is that romney did a lot of interviews in the last election cycle. and they simply don't see the value to doing any more. i wouldn't say that his strategists have control of romney. what they have done is sort of narrow cast him. joe was talking about how they're running him now as a conservative. i would refine that maybe to say they're running him as a business deserve conservative. and stuart mentioned to me an analogy, kind of an unlikely one to the dynamic philadelphia eagles' quarterback michael vick in which he said, you know, michael vick, don't try to turn him into a pocket passer. let him be a rollout passer. in fact, design a system in which he can be the best rollout passer there ever was. they're doing that with romney except, of course, romney is the opposite of vick. he cannot improvise. and{ so they have created a pocket for him, an
