bob redell is live in milpitas this morning. we understand there were warnings sent out before this even happened. >> reporter: yes, the worker wasn't supposed to be on this site or that specific site. part of the site, good morning to you, that's one reason why police are considering a charge. criminal charges against the contractor who is building a small mansion in the calaveras ridge estates community. this is where a worker was crushed to death saturday afternoon. the man a 37-year-old carpenter, had been doing some wood work in a 12-foot deep trench when a wall of mud collapsed on him. the ground was so unstable it wasn't until late last night that the coroner was able to remove his body. the city tells us that no one should have been in the trench to begin with. last week wednesday the building department issued a stop work notice because of recent rains and a lack of shoring that made the hillside too dangerous. >> stopped the work and don't do construction. apparently they ignored that stop work notice. >> reporter: and

bob redell live at san jose police headquarters where they have broken up talking to the media, bob. what's happening down there? >> reporter: yeah, about an hour ago. good morning to you, jon. they hit the panic button when they learned someone had abducted an -y11r-old girl at gun point. an amber alert has been issued. there are 50 to 75 san jose police officers working this case trying to find 11-year-old taylor vo and her alleged kidnapper, here he is, a 42-year-old man, named tri le. both last seen together in a late model american-made minivan, license plate unknown, which explains why the freeway signs aren't lit up. around 1:20 li went to his ex-girlfriend's home where she lives with her parents, two brothers two daughters. a family member tells us le stormed in point the the gun at the head of the father and demanded his ex-girlfriend. she wasn't home. le allegedly busted into the bedroom of her daughter and at gun point took 11-year-old daughter taylor instead. the family believes taylor's mom and le got into an argument in the hours leading up into the kidnap, le is doing

that's where bob redell is live. s the victims are fighting for their lives in hospital as the suspects are still on the loose. >> reporter: even san francisco police admit that this is a head scratcher. what would compel a man to brutally beat two elderly women to the point where they are now fighting for their lives in the hospital here in san francisco? investigators tell us that this was a home invasion, happened at the house on 20th near noriega around 9:20 last night. a man broke in, attacked the 76-year-old woman who lives there, beat her in the head, stabbed her several times in the upper body, another woman, 56 years old, accidentally interrupted the attack when she stopped by the woman's house to deliver food from a nearby restaurant. the man greeted her at the door and hit her with a hammer. now, in spite of her serious injuries, that woman was able to get outq of the house, make her way down the street, across that way over there, you can see the restaurant, the orange awning, that's where she arrived. th

bob redell join us live. crime is the very reason police say that will no longer respond to burglary alarms. >> good morning, laura. a policy that went into effect yesterday, january 21st. it was planned in advance. several people were stabbed. two people were shot. one of whom is still fighting for his life. you can see there were four different locations for the incidents. the violence started at 10:00. someone shot a man and a teenage boy at an end of the year party. it's one of those victims who have in critical condition as of last night. elsewhere around midnight tlfts a large fight in which several people were hurt. some were take on the the hospital with stab wounds. while they are busy with stabbings and shootings, they won't be bothing with burglary alarms anymore. yesterday it instituted a new policy that officers will no longer automatically respond to alarm out of business or home unless they know for sure there is a break-in. they consider this number here in 201098.4% of all burglary alarms wer

bob redell live near the proposed construction site and what's going oun. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. there is a group of residents opposed to using taxpayer money to pay for a 49ers stadium that would be in this parking lot next to great america. the victory comes in this sense. they have now forced the santa clara council to take up this issue again tonight at its meeting. the registrar of voters confirmed that california played fair collected enough signatures to force a referendum on the city's decision to line uf $850 million in bank loans to help finance the project. at the meeting one of three things could happen t city preels the loans, submits the issues to voters, unlikely, or ejects the referendum petitions which is most likely. the city's argue summit that the bank loans were never subject to referendum because that move to approve them was administrative in nature. in other words, they are just carrying out the will of the voters who approved the project in june. santa clara plays fair believes the voters were hoodwinked. the

nbc bay area's bob redell is live at the silicon valley national auto show on the new ford lab and what this means for the bay area. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. ford announced this morning they'll be opening up a research and development lab in palo alto, relatively small, maybe 15 engineers, much like a start up with the freedom to innovate, to try to come up with the new technologies that, say four to five years from now, would change our driving experience. right now, this is state of the art. touch-screen technology inside the car. this is actually voice activated as well. voice-activitied entertainment system, downloadable applications. in the next four to five years, though, ford automakers would like to see a car constantly connected to the internet, compatible with your wireless devices and loaded with sensors that would keep you and other drivers on the road up-to-date with the road conditions or would let you know if you're getting too close to another car. general motors, bmw already have their own r & d lab here in the bay area. by opening its

and that where bob redell joins us live with the latest. what can you tell us? >> reporter: jon, police don't know why someone would attack a 70-year-old woman in her home. was it robbery, was it something else? whatever the motive, the result was devastating. two women including that one are both in the hospital fighting for their lives. the act took place around 9:20 in that home here on 20th around 9:20 as i mentioned. someone brutally assaulted her, then another woman showed up to deliver chinese food. apparently unaware what if was going on inside. the attacker turned on her as well. we understand that he used a hammer on both women, possibly a knife as well. the lady delivering the food was able to make it back to her restaurant which is just around the corner where her fellow employees called 911. both women are at sf general, both with life threatening conditions. it's possible that the elderly woman is the one who is fighting for her life the most. the attacker did get away. no arrests so far. jon, laura. >> thank you, bob. 6:49. pg&e is investigating w

bob redell is live in newark where one company will hold a jobs fair. how many positions are available? >> reporter: quite a number. good morning, jon. target in the east bay is planning a job fair that will start today and the hope to hire 300 people in the next three days. the job fair will be at the newark location we're at now. but this will be for positions at a new store opening in fremont. this is certainly an expression of confidence and the local economy and target's not alone in this. the bay area council just released a survey of 450 executives in the bay area, local companies, and they are also expressing confidence and more saying they plan to hire more people in the next six months. over half saying everything is status quo and about 70% who plan on letting people go in that same amount of time. this is a slight increase, though, over the last survey that the bay area council released. so there you have. local companies expressing confidence, target putting their money where their mouth is by hiring, planning to hire 300 people. the job fa
