despite the fact that new hampshire is so different than south carolina does it effect south carolina? >> one thing we know for sure candidates go to south carolina there will be a lot of money spent down there a lot of advertising. leading up to the aspect of mitt romney's career i suspect he will get the same treatment as gingrich got in iowa. the question will be if mitt was damaged at all by that, who can gain from it? what gingrich and santorum and huntsman are going to be fighting about is who will be able to go to south carolina and say i am the real alternative? >> you know in new hampshire, is it a state given to last minute changes? >> the numbers here don't show the things we are likely to show a mast minute change we saw in iowa. partly because it is romney, he was the governor tof the state next door. a lot of people made up their mind this time around. what we are hearing is there seems to be a sense that is not quite as vibrant as politicking and solid as it was in previous years. it comes to in a sense mitt romney is likely to be the big winner here so there's not goin

nothing could be finer than to be in carolina in the morning ♪ >> and with regards to south carolina, last time i came in fourth, so, you know, our team recognizes this is going to be a challenge. >> republican presidential front runner mitt romney is in south carolina fighting to win south carolina's republican primary, coming up on january 21st. that's a saturday, about one week from now. four years ago in that 2008 south carolina presidential primary, the momentum was against him, and he came in fourth. this year, he appears to have the big mo. why? one, organization. romney's ground campaign is mighty and motivated by a likely big win. two, cash. romney has in cash $19 million to use for advertisements. more than any other competitor. three, endorsements. key south carolinaly politicians, notably the governor of south carolina, nikki haley, romney is now 18 points ahead of his closest competitor, rick santorum who, by the way, narrowly lost to romney in the iowa caucus. now in south carolina a week away romney is polling at 37%, santorum 19%. romney is 19 points ahead of the third

south carolina today? in a week when lots of top tier candidates couldn't fill a room this is the crowd that turned out to see apparently the most popular pseudo politicians in the state of south carolina. neither of them named mitt or newt or rick or the other rick. that is coming up. that's old news because now it's about south carolina. that will not be an issue when it comes to the debate. of course santorum will talk about it because he'll say i won the voters there in iowa but mitt romney's not going to worry about that. the key tonight is simply going to be how quickly will you see them go after romney and how does he handle the attacks? he is going to have to have much better answers than he had beforehand. now that rick perry's out, there's more time and you can't lean on rick perry screwing up. >> will? >> time. yeah, first of all on the santorum news, it's just north of inconsequential. doesn't impact the debate hardly at all. roland mentioned the key word, time. the field has just dropped from five to four. that means more time for each can date. as somebody who goes on tv, let me make a promise to you, when you have 30 seconds, can you get away with saying damn near anything. when you have to actually have minutes to explain your position, it weeds out who knows what they're talking about from who doesn't.

on the other hand, john mccain won south carolina. so there is room for a center right candidate to win south carolina. he has to play hard. that's why he was down there today. >> that's right. and john mccain was down there. i want to play a sound bite of something that happened in new hampshire regarding rick santorum. it could be very interesting when it comes to south carolina. this is a conversation with a student in new hampshire, crucial, because we know in social issues very different than south carolina talking about gay marriage. >> if your point is people should ab loud to do whatever makes them happy. right? is that what you just said? >> as longs they don't harm other people. >> okay. so if they're not harming other people, who determines whether they're harming people or not? >> anybody who understand. >> if there's -- so everybody can understand it. everybody can -- so we're not going to have courts. so there is some objective standard? >> two men should have the same rights as a man and woman. >> what about three men?

and up next south carolina is conservative. greenville, 22 percent of the vote will come from this part of the state. turn out will be big for newt gingrich who wants the state to come big for him. he said that conservatives are coming home and with a win here tonight, he will end up being the nominee. there is ron paul and rick santorum competing aggressively . the weather might be a factor. we have had driving rain storms here in greenville and folks coming in here soaking wet and may make people think twice about going to the polls. there is not as much bad weather where romney is stronger. it is the moderate south carolina electorate. we'll see whether or not it stays as strong as it was. i will eat at tommies and vote afterwards rather than before hand. >> karl, is there much talk about the turn out with the women there? south carolina defies expectations in primaries elsewhere . of how has it been. >> it is shifting a bit. most of the polls suggested in south carolina he had a bit of an edge with seniors over newt gingric

so i want to say he's not particularly pretty in south carolina, south carolina to be different than the campaign hall tonight. >> no question. unfortunate thing and thing i worry about is how this affects republicans as a whole. i don't think this is very healthy for the republican party. i think this sends a mixed message. almost siding -- going on the other side of the aisle. the last thing we want to do is divide this country anymore that. is what president obama has done. so here, i see governor romney coming in and trying to unify us, trying to bring this country back together. that is what he needs to do. that is what we need. >> greta: what is good for the goose and good for the gander. there are speakers nor speaker gingrich. it took its toll on speaker gingrich. it's harder for him. governor romney is sort of talks about being big, you know? and having everyone join together. he can fight. >> there is no question. i have no problems with -- i have broad shoulders and i know the governor does but this is now a different ideology. we're going to. >> greta: he's winning now. >
