christie smith live in oakland right now and, christie, it sounds like this will not be pretty. >> reporter: yeah. you know, no doubt, this is going to be a painful day for oakland city workers, because the redevelopment funds paid for nearly 200 full-time jobs here in the city. so, what's expected today is more than 1,000 pink slips will be going out to workers in oakland, although it's estimated that less than 200 workers will actually lose their jobs after february 1st. what's happening is that the city council wants room to make tough decisions as it tries to recover from a huge loss of about $25 million in redevelopment funds. this after state subsidized redevelopment programs were completely slashed, and these programs are used for things like fighting blight and building affordable housing. >> for the state of california, we are -- we have been ordered to dissolve redevelopment, and many other local governments in other cities are dealing with the same issue in their own way. >> reporter: these layoff notices could hit nearly every department, and the city administrator is also askin

that is where nbc bay area's christie smith is now. she joins us live with a look at all the demolition. we see the wrecking ball right behind you, christie. >> reporter: yeah. good morning. it took five or six swings of the wrecking ball for it to finally do some damage to this old jail but it's happening. 78 years after it opened its doors, last act of san francisco sheriff mike hennessey. he said he vowed to close san francisco jail number three in his first campaign for sheriff 32 years ago. there were reports that it was deteriorating quickly with rumors it was overcrowded. it was built for about 550 inmates but often held 750. it took a federal court ruling in 1997 to finally force the closure. hennessey told us this was a long time coming. >> the interesting comparison, for example, is this opened in 1934, the same year that alcatraz opened, in 1934. alcatraz was closed down in 19 63. this building continued to operate for another 40 years after alcatraz was shut down. same type of construction, same type of cell block area and

reporting live in novato, christie smith. jon and marla, back to you. >> lit hope they catch them. >>> north bay prosecutors are make their case against a suspected serial killer charged with killing four women. today's hearing is the very first time prosecutors will publicly detail their case against. 78-year-old joseph naso, charged with killing four women in the 1970s and '1990s. each of the women were prostitutes who had initials if nur first and last names that started with the same letter. he kept news clippings of the killings in i safety deposit box. >>> police are on the trail of a hit-and-run driver who reportedry got out of his car to check on the man he or she killed and then took off anyway. officers say the car plowed into the man as he was crossing the street last night at intersection of 73rd and bancroft avenues in oakland. witnesses tell police a suspect pulled over at a nearby gas station, saw how bad the injuries were and took off. officers have not released the victim's name but say he was 51. police say

reporting live in san francisco, i'm christie smith. >> thanks. union city high school teacher is due in court to enter a plea on multiple charges of having section with a student. 36-year-old peter faces 21 felony charges for having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old. investigators say that the james logan high school teacher began the relationship last march. they are looking for additional victims. >> killed in an instant. the driver at a light never saw this couple. he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and it cost him his life. robbery suspects smashed into oohis car going 80 miles an hou. this happened on mowry avenue. the two-car collision flipped the suspect's car. two ran but they were later caught. moments before the accident police were chasing the suspects from a robbery scene. officers say they backed off before the crash occurred. >> an east bay city could begin using a controversial method to combat gang violence. the hayward city counsels sl talking about a gang injunction. opponents say it's an infringement and too exp

"today in the bay's" christie smith live in oakland right now. she has the information and details on what's behind all the layoffs, good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you, john. yeah, this is a big hit for oakland city workers. about half the workforce, 1,500 people, are expected to start getting those pink slips today. the only people who won't would be police officers and firemen. now, the expectation is that about 200 people will actually lose their jobs by the end of the month. what's happening here is the city's trying to meet a february deadline to dissolve the redevelopment agency after the state-subsidized program was basically axed last month. oakland considers about half the city blighted, so it had a really active redevelopment program, and it paid for nearly 200 full-time workers. and some told us they've already given all they can. >> we have given up more than 20% and they're coming back for more. it seems like the more you give, the more they have come back for. >> reporter: now, the cuts are trying to make up fo

reporting live, christie smith. john and laura, back to you. >> the two men accused of beating bryan stow will not be in court but their lawyers will be. they will be there to set a preliminary hearing date for luis sanchez and marvin norwood. the two accused of assaulting stow after that opening game at dodger stadium. they pleaded not guilty back in august. this preliminary hearing will likely be held next month. it will determine if there is enough evidence to charge the two with stow's beating. stow continues to recover at a rehabilitation center in san francisco. his family says he is able to stand now and is relearning how to talk and write. >> it is 5:33. joseph nasowill be back in court for week two of his preliminary hearing. he is accused of killing four northern california women between 1977 and 1994. during last week's hearing it was revealed he had a list of ten women's names among his things, four of those are believed to be the women he is charged with killing. there was a line that said, quote, girl

live in oakland, christie smith. back to you guys. >> thank you, christie. it is 4:33 right now. a teenage boy accused of murdering his parents is scheduled to appear in an observe land courtroom today. the 15-year-old is suspected of killing the couple friday. the bodies of robert kamin and susan poff were found in their car. kamin's brother says the couple adopted the boy nearly ten years ago. he noticed a change when the teen started playing violent video games and hanging out at occupy oakland camps. >> they got him when he was 6. he had been in foster homes. he escaped from his original parents like when he was about as young as 3 years old. >> the district attorney's office says the teen is to be arraigned as an adult. >> a teacher in a south bay elementary school will be in court today answering the charges of sexual assault on a child. craig chandler taught second and third grade in san jose. prosecutors say he sexually assaulted two students on school grounds between august and october of last year. chandler will be arraigned this morning. >> also today, the man accused

christie smith is live in lafayette. police this is not the first time this realtor has been busted. >> reporter: that's what we're hearing. it all started with shall as , said, a 12-year-old girl who had her web cam on during an open house. apparently she saw someone going through her things. police made an arrest here in lafayette and now are wondering if there may be more victims out there. they arrested douglas john caligeno, 46 years old. they say he went through people's things, taking jewelry. in 2010, he was a real estate agent who used his acticess to lock boxes in san ramon and sold items from those homes online. he was then convicted of burglary. lafayette police put his picture up again and san ramon police recognized the man. a search of his home turned up items they think were stolen and a gps system. >> he had programmed in multiple locations around the lafayette/lorinda and alamo areas, where they were having open houses. and so, obviously, we're hoping that if anybody out there was a victim of this gentl

today in the bay's christie smith is live in oakland with what we can expect. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. they are giving you fair warning. this doesn't happen until a month from now. what's happening is that the upper deck into san francisco is going to be closed down while the lower deck coming into oakland will remain open. this is happening february 17, that's a friday, starting at 8:00 at night all the way through tuesday, february 21st at 5:00 in the morning. the toll bridge program oversight committee made the announcement. they will share more details later this morning. but what this is for is for construction of a slight detour near the toll plaza that will mean that the upper deck must be closed. if you recall, they did something similar last year. they are saying, though, that weather could slow things down so certainly something to watch for. this is the same area near the oakland touchdown that they worked on. but the hope is this could help speed up the opening in 2013. drivers will notice a slight realignment when the

christie smith is live in oakland with what's behind the massive layoff notices. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. city workers in oakland have been bracing for this for quite some time, the expectation is that a huge stack of pink slips will go out today, about 1,500. and then at the end of the month, about 200 city workers will actually lose their jobs and that's to make up for about $25 million that will be lost when redevelopment agencies are dissolved. this after the state subsidized programs are basically eliminated last month. cities use them for things like building housing and fighting blight, and oakland considers nearly half the city blighted, so this is a big hit. city workers say they've given up a lot and there's not much more they can do. >> we have given up more than 20% and they're coming back for more. it seems like the more you give, the more they come back for. >> reporter: now, the workers will receive a courtesy notice and then a letter at home a little bit later in the next week. the mayor and the city administrator expected to
