february and march are two of cordova's snowiest months. son tracy, cbs news, alaska. >> pelley: we wondered why there's so much snow in alaska and so little in the lower 48. our researchers worked on it today, and it turns out the reason is something called the arctic oscillation. right now, air pressure over greenland is lower then normal, so the high-speed wind, called the jet stream, has pushed father north than usual. the jet stream is blocking cold air from dropping farther south. last year it was just the other way around-- high pressure in the north arctic pushed the stream south and we had record snow in the northern united states. what does it mean right now in ndow plow parks and ski lift stops? we asked cynthia bowers to find out. >> reporter: in northern michigan's tourist towns, the errmer the weather, the colder the cash flow. a long, hard winter here is when you don't have snow? >> yes. >> reporter: don and anne rafton sunk their life savings into this houghton lake motel and snowmobile rental business. normally this month,

heather hintze of cbs anchorage affiliate ktva is in cordova. >> reporter: cordova residents who parked at the airport for a quick trip out of town were surprised when they returned. >> i've been in cordova almost 30 years and i have never, never seen this much snow. >> reporter: if they didn't remember exactly where they parked their cars, they were in trouble. after more than 200 inches of snow in just a few weeks, a heady rain over the weekend added to the misery. >> trying to get this heavy load off before the rain and the next snow. >> reporter: boats in the harbor started to sink under the weight of a rain-laden snow. folks in town were left to deal with a slushy mess while cars were rerouted from roads threatened by avalanche, national guard soldiers were hard at work trying to prevent roofs from buckling. snow that high can weigh up to 100 pounds per square foot. the soldiers are expected to be here through the end of the week and cordova residents are glad they no longer have to face this winter weather alone. for cbs news, heather hintze, alaska. >> pelley: the snow may have l

in cordova, alaska, it just won't stop. nearly 200 inches of snow has buried the town of cordova this winter and more fell yesterday. the last time we checked with national correspondent ben tracy, he had made it as far as anchorage. this morning, we can tell you ben is in cordova. through the blizzard to get there. >> the pilots told us we had a 1% chance of making the landing here in cordova. as you can see, we made it. we're driving in on the only road that goes into cordova. it's surrounded by mountains and glaciers. the national guard has been doing everything they can to keep the road open. it's really the only way into town. when we got into town, we saw this. >> the only melting snowmelter that's mobile in alaska. >> they brought this thing in on a barge. it heats the snow to 150 degrees and flushes it down the sewer. >> are you melting the snow because there's nowhere else to put it? >> yeah. that's one word for it. >> this is a treat. it's completely backed up with snow. >> you got to get the snow out of here. >>

cordova, we are in the wilderness, only accessible by boat or plane. we're fortunate that because we sort of expect this stuff, people have stockpiles of food. we've, you know, had good fuel deliveries, so in terms of food, fuel and lec tris itty, we were fine. but we just couldn't keep up with the snow and it was getting to the point where we were starting to see roofs cave in, we were starting to lose buildings and that's when we really, you know, that's when it sort of got to a more serious situation and we needed the mancle pow-- manpower. >> you're a relatively small fishing town community of about 2,000 or so. you apparently went through some emergency preparedness training just in case something like this or anything else were to happen. what did that training prepare you all for? >> well, i think we're really lucky our town has been very proactive on emergency preparedness, and, you know, the town has been through a lot of things over the years. in 1964 we had a big earthquake that uplifted the ocean floor by five feet. we had fires in the '60s

donna cordova from our nbc station in sacramento has more on this from the scene. >> get paramedics. don't mustbaby. >> reporter: witnesses yelling at some of the passengers who got off of the light rail train after the crash who were trying to help the victims in the suv which you see like crumpled near the center of the screen. >> only maybe about 30 yards south of the intersection and the vehicle had flipped over and its on its top. >> reporter: the suv and the train collided at 26th avenue near 25th street in south sacramento. here it is being towed from the scene. of the four people in the suv, three are dead including an infant, a boy. the lone survivor in the suv, a woman is being treated at the hospital. 50 people were on the train. several of the 16 injured train passengers were taken to the uc-davis medical center including a 13-year-old boy. >> he has lumps on the back of his head. he has a neck brace on. eyes is red from crying. he's scared basically. >> reporter: investigators are looking at video and evidence at the scene. they're also talking with witnesses on the trai
