as you probably all know, last tuesday, november 8, the people of san francisco elected edwin lee in his own right, to serve as mayor of san francisco. let me say, on a personal note, the day before the election, i was having coffee at my favorite cafe in glen park, and lost in my e-mail, whatever i was doing in the moment. all of a sudden, i hear some commotion and see the mayor coming in to shake hands with me. he was doing parts of his campaign stump. it is already a tradition, in a few months that he served as interim mayor, among the department heads, you cannot be incognito in this town, because the mayor will find you. maybe in a cafe or someplace else that you hang out. this mayor likes to be everywhere, likes to know everyone. that is what the city really needs, somebody who knows the city, knows what the city is all about, what the city wants. has got the kind of discipline, the kind of 7 to 9 scheduled to make it happen. he has already set an example, and we are all looking forward to a hold term of this with him. ladies and gentlemen, it gives me a great pleasure and it i

[applause] >> thank you, earl. it is my pleasure to introduce our first honoree earl arniconie. he has lived here in the bay area for the past 22 years with his wife brigitte. currently working as the workforce investment act program coordinator and for the united nations -- united in the nations of east bay, earl encourages native american youth and adults to finish their high school, diplomas, as well lead g d's, an enrolled in vocational programs to further advance their training. he also assist those who want to achieve a higher educational degree by promoting recruit and and retention of native american students throughout indian country. as earl is a veteran of the indicted states marine corps and a graduate of the seattle police academy, he assists native american veterans i

[applause] >> well, welcome. welcome to city hall, everyone. it is my pleasure to welcome all of you here to the seventh annual philippine-american celebration heritage month. counsel general, thank you. mayer brown, thank you very much. i know you are out there somewhere. board president, thank you for being here as well. i am is so happy, because we have a lot of things to celebrate. and i want to first and foremost thank one of the people that i have had a chance to work with, and i think she is a proud member of the filipino-american community here in san francisco, and that has been my chief adviser on families, children, education, and of course she is the president of our school board. hydra mendoza, thank you. thank you for being here. [applause] you know, as we celebrate filipino history month, we recognize the filipino history that is inextricably a part of our city's history. and during the historic struggle that we kept seniors -- remember those years where we stood on an alliance to protect our senio

[applause] >> good afternoon. welcome. thank you very much for the introduction. i have a lot to be happy about this day because it is the 100th anniversary celebrating international women's day, and to tell you we have quite a bit to celebrate. we have probably the highest number of women commissioners ever in the history of the city today. isn't that wonderful? [applause] we have clearly a good and growing balance of women, on the board of supervisors, commissioners, and department heads as well. i'm extremely proud to be heading up this very complicated city. [laughter] one that does not let me sleep very much, but certainly it -- i have said this in many cases, just literally these eight weeks i have fallen in love with this city even deeper because it is such a wonderful place to be. every community i visit, every corridor that we walk together, it fascinates me house on many other people who live and work here -- but even those who don't -- just love this city and they do what they can to make sure that it is running

i am pleased to introduce the honorable edwin lee, the first asian-american mayor in san francisco history. he was appointed unanimously as the successor mayor by the board of supervisors in 2011 to fill the remaining term of mayor news who was sworn in a s lieutenant governor. mayor lee won the election and will serve a full term as mayor. prior to his employment with the city and county of san francisco, he was the managing attorney for the san francisco asian law caucus. he worked there from 1979 to 1989. he was born in seattle. he was born in a previous year of the dragon. he is a summa cum laude graduate of bowdoin college and san francisco school of law. please help me welcome san francisco's mayor.
