gavin newsom, there is not much i can say. i would not be here but for gavin. he offered me the opportunity to come here to be the chief of police. at the time when we worked together, i could not have asked for a better mayor. you were there to support, you never micromanaged. you provided the tools for me to get the job done. as we were talking about replacing a mutual friend, someone i supported greatly, because i believe she was the most qualified person to be the attorney-general in this state, we started talking, and the offer came up, something quite unexpected. frankly, i have to think about it. it was not something that i was ready for. but i cannot tell you, gavin, how much your support has meant for me, and obviously your endorsement in the election. to my right, senator feinstein was somebody that i respected for many years. when i was at the lapd, we work with her office regularly, dealing with assault weapons. how do we make our country safer? no one, other than the military, should own an assault rifle. hopefully, we can get back to that one day.

i'm very proud that gavin newsom as mayor appointed him police chief and then district attorney and many times people who are appointed can't win in an election, but george gascon did win and today he is here on his own as an elected official with 62% of the vote in the city and county of san francisco. [applause] >> he is the 12th elected d.a. and our first hispanic american district attorney. [applause] >> gavin mentioned all the various accomplishments that he has had introducing the chief of police here, a computerized crime tracking system, go ahead, that's an important thing. only more than one person should clap. [applause] >> only one thing i'm terribly jealous of is that during his tenure, murders in san francisco were the lowest they had been in half a century. [cheers and applause] >> i thought i was the one who did that. willie thought he was the one who did that. it was clearly gascon, the one who did that. he has also launched an aggressive program to reduce truancy in our city. bottom line -- he has been in law enforcement for 30 years. bottom line -- no one has found faul

so round of applause for gavin newsom and that extraordinary effort. [applause] >> in just a few minutes, the swearing-in ceremony will take place and it is most appropriate that the man who will administer the oath of office will be administering it to george. carlos marino, i had the great pleasure of participating in his swearing-in ceremony for the supreme court of california. he left a lifetime appointment, dianne, that you had participated in clearing him for in the u.s. senate in 1998. he left a lifetime judgeship appointment to assume the awesome responsibility to be one and a member and an associate justice of our state supreme court. his career is really unusual in that after leaving yale university, graduating and coming home and going to work, his friends and relatives were on his case full-time. his mind was so agile and so able to understand insurance policies and other kinds of complicated things that it prompted him to go back to school. he didn't have a license to practice law. what he was being asked were the kind of things that a qua

[applause] and gavin newsom named the first female fire chief, joanne hayes-white. [applause] and you kept gavin newsom's chief of staff, steve. where are you, steve? [applause] and then, mr. mayor, all this just didn't happen, all the business of the beautiful blue drapery decking out staal and -- city hall and the blue carpet and the horns aplenty heralding your arrival, that all happened because of the committee headed by none other than charlotte cholets and maw enthusiastic, and they put that all together with the inaugural committee. stand up. you're a member of that inaugural committee. [applause] and then, of course, mr. mayor, you hosted, during the christmas holidays, an event for a very important international unit, and as this city obviously unfolds in its international importance under your leadership, the counselor corps of san francisco is going to be very important. and for the 70 or more countries represented, would the council corps members please rise, so people can see who you really are. [applause] >> now, san francisco would never be complete -

to lieutenant governor gavin newsom, you're bold, your ideas have inspired me to go beyond just the bureaucratic jobs that i've had and your lessons about not being fearful and taking risks have all been absorbed. thank you very much for your years. [applause] charlotte, you're going to be with us, aren't you? thank you very, very much for all yours years of service. and we hope that you will continue and help us out. to the board of supervisors, each and every one of you, i am ready to carry out the duties of this office and to do it in a way in which you will be proud. and to specifically supervisor david chiu and sean elsbernd who really had a lot to do with the pivotal discussions we had about this office, thank you very much for that strong and continued encouragement. i very much appreciate that. and to our communities, to all of you who have come today to witness this, i want to thank you. because it is really for your behalf that we are doing this. and i want to say to all of you, i make that pledge that i will do my very, very best to represent all of the communities that you -- that yo

it's quite a style contrast between him and gavin newsom. what do you say about that? >> this time he's coming with the support of the people of san francisco, so it's a little more significant. style point, no question. we'll be in and out of there in a couple of hours. if this was gavin newsom, there would be events throughout the city and party at night. if it was mayor brown, we would have had parties all weekend. we're in and out in a few hours, get a little policy and we're on our way. >> what about style for the rest of his tenure? four years. you look at a guy who calls himself a nonpolitician who presumably won't be running for state office next as we've seen with the next couple of mayors. why do you think that will be different? >> not so sure it will be. he's got the people behind him with next four year term. he has to make the appointment to the board of supervisors. this is a highly political decision. this is someone who's got to get elected in november. right away gets into the politics. >> what he has to deal with is a bit of a bureaucrat for a 20 yea
