with that, we bring in jeff ranieri. it is beautiful. how's it looking for the weekend? >> pretty good throughout saturday and sunday. just as jantober is catching on, it starts to exit. we've seen temperatures drop 10 degrees today, down to 61 in santa rosa. livermore, 61 as well. and 60 right in redwood city. also seeing some marked cooling in los gatos with 59 degrees. 57 up into san francisco as the onshore flow returned. the fog is coming back and a lot of low level cloud cover hanging around at the coastline. right now, we have 42 in napa. 48 in fairfield. it's that cold air that's already starting to settle in, that is going to bring us a bone-chilling night yet again with some fairly light winds right now, anywhere from 2 to 3 miles per hour here for our interior east bay sections. 7-mile-per-hour wind in redwood city and 6 miles per hour in san jose. so for tonight, while we had a weak disturbance pass well off to the north in washington and oregon, that meant little to nothing for us today as we're still finding ourselves with very, very dry conditions with hig

jeff ranieri joins us from the weather center. >> welcome to our new home. the weather center, as you mentioned. we have the latest in the hd graphics, live doppler radar. there's no better place to track this weather than in our weather center. there's no better time to debut this than right now. three systems in three days to break th dry spell of 32 days without rain. let's get a look at the live doppler radar as it scans around. 350 mile radius, returns in eureka. it's still dry here for us. aithe mn band of moisture is off to the north. it's going to sag to the south as it continues to develop and tap inep moisture tomorrow. what will it mean for thursday? anywhere from a quarter to inch of rainfall, the heaviest in the north bay. a second system for friday. also that third system as we head into sunday. we are going to time line all of this for you coming up in just a few minutes. it's beautiful, isn't it? >> it's nice. >>> still ahead, new claims into the italian cruise ship disaster. what really happened according to the em battled cap pain. >> they

meteorologist jeff ranieri joins us now. you said the operative word here is storms with an s. >> yes, yes. it is plural, and we are looking at three storms in three days here as we head throughout this week, so great news for the sierra. snow levels still a little on the higher side but nonetheless they will be picking up something this week. we picked up a lot in terms of cold numbers today. 49 in san rafael, 50 in fremont, 47 in los got oatogatos. numbers dropping into the 40s not only in the north bay where we have seen that routinely the past couple of weeks but for everyone, including concord and livermore. 49 in gilroy, 47 in san jose and right now 50 in sunnyvale with 45 in san mateo. light winds will aid in this freeze warning impacting a lot of us. look at this, north bay, east bay, south bay, also peninsula under the freeze warning where we'll have isolated 20s and 30s for tonight. remember those pets and remember to protect those plants. we have nothing in the way of cloud cover impacting us here. but big changes

let's check in with meteorologist jeff ranieri. >> the freezing mark for napa and sonoma, 31 respectively. livermore 35, redwood city, 37. we did have a little bit of cloud cover move in today but definitely no rainfall. we did have a slight charge chance for showers offshore that stayed offshore to bring us rainfall, more hope in our 7-day forecast. numbers above average despite the hazy conditions looking at the dry cycle shifting for us, the system offshore, not enough to trigger any kind of shower activity offshore. we did think we may see a few bands of this. it was so far away, no chance for showers making in blow pressure developed this morning. clear with storm activity, in alaska, had cordova, alaska, ten-plus feet of snowfall. really unbelievable up there for us, high pressure that will crank down the dry northerly winds, we head throughout tomorrow. again increasing fire danger across the hill tops, north and east bay. as we head throughout thursday, we are still look at cold and clear mornings, remember to cover the plants and bring the pets in, very chilly the next couple of

jeff ranieri, i think some of us are also getting ready for a little drying off as well. >> yes. after that much-needed rainfall, we are going to see this trend starting to shift for us. i did want to show you all this rainfall total graphic one more time in case you missed it. these numbers impressive. over a 72-hour period santa rosa picking up over 6.5 inches of rainfall. napa nearly 4.5. close to 5 in morgan hill. san francisco downtown over 2.5 and close to an inch in san jose so numbers really varied widely, but overall it was some excellent news for the water season here across the bay area. as the doppler radar scans around, we are finding some dry conditions. that's good, especially with all of the rock slides we've been reporting on but we could use quite a bit more rainfall for our season. the numbers not too bad. we did get in some on sunshine but still a lot of cloud cover overhead today. 54 in san jose, 51 in livermore, 53 in san francisco. holding on to some low 50s up into the north bay with santa rosa a little warmer there at 57 degrees. as we continue throughout

let's get rejoined by the chief meteorologists jeff ranieri. the cold and the rain. >> we have that in the seven-day forecast, it has been a long time coming and 31 days with no rain and all indications are pointing towards seeing this dry spell broken here as we head throughout the next 48 hours. much-needed rainfall eventually coming back. it is all about the cold. not nearly as much as last night. cloud cover helping to insulate the numbers in 38. 40 in fairfield and 39 in novato and dropping to 35 right now. 40 in sunnyvale. we are still expecting cold widespread 30s and a freeze warning in effect. the main thing many of you notice is the cloud cover increasing and warping for us and ahead with larger changes including rain, wind, and isolated thunderstorms. let's get to the freeze warning for those of you in the south bay where we expect some of these interior valleys to drop down to isolated 20s and the areas of frost. we are looking at light winds that was once again in san jose to campbell looking at the coldest levels on the map. in te

to see how this february is shaping up and beyond, let's chick in with jeff ranieri in the nbc bay area weather center. how does it look? >> what we're finding in the satellite radar picture, pretty tire when you look at the current state. while we have a cool front moving across, it's not producing much in terms of rainfall, and let's go ahead and get a look at the predictions. over the next 30 days, it's going to be dry here. we're looking at a snow pack of 40% of normal here in and throughout the sierra. when we soom in, what you'll find is over the next 30 days, below average rain chances by all accounts for the bay area. even for the next 90 days, we'll continue to trend dry with likely this drought development continuing for the northeast, also the south bay continuing right up to lake tahoe. so not great news there when it comes to this dry weather. now, right now, when we look at the numbers overall, we're starting to see things cool off a little bit after another mild day despite the cloud cover that hung around from the fog this morning. pretty warn influx from the south, also

here is chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. >> we will have a look at the radar in just a bit. as you can see, it is intensifying, mainly for the north bay. that's where we had from one to two inches of rain fall today. wind sustained at 20 miles an hour. gusting close to 30 at times. can you see from vallejo, to san rafael, that's the heaviest the past half hour, 45 minutes. with some of these cells that moved over, any why from a quarter to half inch per hour. now, the peninsula starting to pick up here with heavier returns off-shore. that is moving into san francisco and also red wood city as we head throughout the next hour. for the east bay, it slowed down. but all of that rain we just saw on the coastline, that is moving your way as we head throughout the next couple of hours as well. for the south bay, picking up in san jose right now. it is intense off-shore. as winds ramp up to 26 miles per hour at our coastline. temperatures mid to upper 50s for most of us. right now testimony patriot with 50s, on the entire board here from santa rosa from san jose. fairfield in upper

meteorologist, jeff ranieri -- i am getting myself tongue tied -- >> yeah, because we have not had rain in so long, and it has been a while since we had winter weather. it was probably this number that got you tripped up, 31 days with no rain in the bay area. and we have a sign of changes to come, and right now it's bitter and frigid out here, and 44 in livermore, and 47 in san mateo. up here in the north bay and san francisco it's not nearly as cold as it was this time last night. we have the cloud cover starting to slowly increase. it will save some of us tonight from freezing conditions, but we are monitoring the freeze warning as we head to tomorrow morning. 20s and 30s expected for the freeze warning. we are not expecting as much cloud cover down here tonight and early tomorrow morning and we could have areas of frost, and all the way down to morgan hill and gilroy. morgan hill had the coldest number this morning at just 19 degrees. there is the cloud cover, and increasing rain showers. our moisture in rainfall is still 1,000 miles out. and as the storm gets its legs behind it, it
