, and we're going to be working on this effort with support from michigan universities, the michigan regional council of carpenters and millwrights, the operating engineers union and the teamsters. i appreciate all of their support and hope others will join us in this effort. in addition to the special messages, we took a number of other very important actions. first we began a dialogue on reducing taxes on industrial equipment, which needs to continue. michigan's been a world leader in manufacturing, and we want good job growth to happen in this important economic sector. now this conversation needs to be done in partnership with our local jurisdictions, since it's a critical part of the revenue. let's look for a long-term solution that generates more and better jobs while properly supporting our communities. we accomplished major reforms of our state pension and retiree medical system. these reforms moved our benefits structure to bet ear line with the private sector, so that we'll remain a good place to work while at the same time reducing our long-term liabilities by more than $5

congratulations, michigan. you elected a republican legislature and republican governor last time around. and so now, if you are black and you live in the state of michigan, you may soon have only a 50-50 chance of your vote counting in michigan toward who represents you in your city or town. that letter that was sent to governor snyder a few weeks ago expressed concern about the governor's expanded emergency management law, irreversibly undermining voting rights in the state. dozens of the elected officials asked for a meeting with the governor before he took further action under the law. we spoke with the office of the congressman who was the lead author of the letter, the office said to their knowledge the governor never responded to the letter let alone agreed to hold the meeting. michigan republicans who support this emergency manager law say it has nothing to do with race, it's about competence and fiscal responsibility, which cannot be achieved through the democratic process and for the democratic proces
