terry mcsweeney is live at the novato police department. they are investigating whether a fire last night is one of the arson fires? >> reporter: yeah, they are. this guy might have changed his modus operandi this was in a garbage can, suspicious, no doubt the question is, is it the work of the day who has set 56 other arson fires since saturday night? take a look at pictures of what this guy has been doing. the first batch or the most recent i should say batch of fires in the rush creek open space preserve, 24 fires beginning sunday night into monday morning. the previous fires saturday into sunday in the seascape village neighborhood, five, six mile as part, fires set between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., nobody injured, no homes burned. the fire last night at 7:00, is considered suspicious. >> the fire last evening in the ignacio area of town, garbage can fire considered suspicious but we haven't been able to link it to the other arson fires. >> reporter: novato police and firefighters out overnight patrolling the city as best they can. they've cal

terry mcsweeney is live in novato. the most recent fire was not set that long ago. >> reporter: it was 1:00 yesterday morning. there's a little good news. he apparently did not strike overnight. is that because he took the night off or because of the increased patrols by novato police and fire department going into the areas where he has struck. take a look at some of the fires that he has set, 24 of the 56 fires, in the rush creek open space preserve neighbors say the smell of smoke was strong, scary. the previous fires in the seascape village neighborhood. >> it shows that the person is mobile and at this point it would be a guessing game as to where they may show up again. we are a fairly large community, 28 square miles resource only go so far itch >> reporter: that is why arson experts from across marin county are being called to help with this case. novato police and fire patrolling overnight. this arsonist taking advantage of strangely bone dry conditions here in january, scaring residents, putting a strange on

the temperatures, boy, take a look. 125 in novato. 29 in santa rosa. below freezing in napa and fairfield. the north bay definitely the coldest part of the bay area this morning. let's also include in that the inlandest bay valleys. 32 degrees in concord. the 680 ride is going to be right there near the freezing mark. warming to 34 toward livermore. san jose 40 degrees on tap. 43 in mountain view. looks like san francisco is coming in at 47. all in all a cold start. by 9:00 after the sun comes up, we should see enough warming that we'll say goodbye to the 30s and some of those 20s we're seeing up there. we'll replace those with solid 40s and 50s and then by about noontime we'll see more 60s come into view. a lot more green by 2k-bg in the -- 2:00 in the afternoon. we're looking for low to mid- 60s with the clear skies. the clear skies do begin to diminish a little bit as we head into tuesday. we have cloud cover headed our way. clouds for sure. the winds will pick up a little bit. will there be rain as the system pushes on through? that's the big quest

allie rasmus is in novato where there was another suspicious fire a couple of hours ago, good morning allie. >> reporter: it happened around 1:30 this morning in the rush creek open space in novato and you can see it in the darkness it is just over this hill. it burned about three quarters of an acre in the open space preserve however it is not threatening any homes. firefighters will allow it to burn itself out and an italian chef would not say whether it was connected 209 or so grass fire over the weekend here in novato. here is a location, most of them in the redwood boulevard and sea scape drive. they believe they were deliberately set and there is an arson investigation underway. it started on 9:00 p.m. on saturday evening and a couple of hours later somebody set fire to a grassy area of the sidewalk on redwood boulevard and that damaged a fence and pg&e power pole and they put out between 15 to 20 small grass fires and most of them set were small but were located very close to homes and residential areas. again it is an open space preserve this fire but it's right across the str

in novato where firefighters are struggling to keep up, allie rasmus is there, allie? >> reporter: firefighters had to hike over this hill to get to the fire and i will show you what it looks like over this hillside. according to firefighters it has burned about three quarters of an acre and it has not threatened any homes or structures. they say they will let the fire burn itself out. in novato, investigators and police have spent the last hour chasing a fire bug and it's set in the neighborhood of sea scape and redwood boulevard. here is a map of those locations, most of them are small and didn't cause any serious damage. most of those fires were 20 feet away from homes and given the atmosphere, it could have caused some problems. until 3:00 a.m., firefighters were putting out fires on other locations we showed you a moment ago. there was one structure damage so far but the fire chief says there have been additional fires since last night. there was one on redwood boulevard and the most recent one happened in the rush creek open space preserve. live in novato allie r

all of these suspicious fires have happened in south novato. this area here, this is where one of the fires was set. you can see where the black patch in the found is. this is where the fire was. this is a -- this is a burnt- city looking wood chips. this is just 10 to 20 feet away. that's augmenting the risk and -- and the ringer. nova police think they have a firebug on their hands. this started around 1:30 this morning. firefighters had to hike to get to it. it burned about three-quarters of an acre. it's not very big and it's not threatening any homes in the area. firefighters put a line around it. they said their strategy in tackling that fire was basically to let the fire burn itself out. as of about 45 minutes, that fire was still smoldering, in that open preserve. the battalion chief wouldn't say whether the fire in the preserve is definitely connected to the 20 or so other fires. but they have been much of the weekend looking for an arson. it all started with a dumpster fire saturday night. a few hours after firefighters went to that d

tonight's novato looking for arsonist on terror. first fires set saturday night in the seascape village neighborhood this morning arson happened 5 miles north in the rush creek open space preserve. lillian is live with the latest on an intensifying search. >> fires set between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. and so officers are on heightened alert in case the person responsible is out again tonight. >> police stepped up patrol. there on the look out for arsonist so far there have been 56 small fires since saturday night. 24 happened during the early morning hours in a rush creek open state preserve. barry lives nearby off this drive. >> it was pretty strong. entire house smelled like smok smoke. it was definitely scary. >> the fact that the latest rupd of fires happened 6 miles away from the seascape village neighborhood where first fires set is troubling to investigators. >> it shows that the person was mobile and at this point it would be a guessing game where they may show up again. we have a fairly large community. 28 squar
