oakland city officials are surveying the damage today, following yesterday's chaotic occupy oakland actions. with an unsuccessful event to break into the vacant kaiser center, protesters broke into city hall. today, mayor jean quan showed report of some of the damage, saying the occupy protests have strained the city's resources and angered oakland residents. >> i think they have been treating us like a playground and i think everyone is losing patience. i think they are hurting the movement. oakland occupy is one of the national policy of occupies to be nonviolent,. >> the city estimates the damage from occupy protests since october is about $2 million. >>> hundreds of people were arrested in oakland last night, and today, some of those arrested were being released on bail. protesters entered a ymca building last night. they say they were invited in by ymca employees. they say police boxed them in, then arrested them for trespassing. they blame police for any violence that ensued and say they were only trying to protect themselves. >> we were just helping people and it was a peaceful prote

why oakland? >> well, you know, it goes back really to the 60s or even before that. oakland is the birthplace of the black panthers, and that movement sprung out of racial discrimination economic inequityies and however it also was part of this dynamic in which the police cracked down on militant active activist, and that fed even more militant activistism. it's a vicious cycle we're seeing. i spoke with members of occupy oakland who can say yes the black panthers is what we're log to here. although not all of them by any means condone vandalism i think they're willing to tolerate it more partly because that have culture that it goes back all the way to the 60s. >> the mayor of oakland, jean quan has asked occupy protesters to condemn the violence over the weekend dissociate themselves from it. have they done so? will they do so? >> well, i don't think that they will in oakland least not based on conversations i've had with people. it's a question of the broader occupy movement. and they're in a d

terry mcsweeney is live at oakland city hall with the details. >>> the city of oakland suddenly losing 28 million dollars in redevelopment money they are talking about job cuts and program cuts no wonder so many people turned out last night, standing room only at the city council meeting. there was a lot of noise, especially from occupy protesters. take a listen. occupy protesters say they were there on behalf of labor and they forcedb: meeting to be adjourned for 30 minutes. councilmembers notified thousands of workers last week that their jobs might be eliminated. first it was thought that maybe 200 jobs could be cut now they are talking about 105 only 81 of those jobs are currently filled. the rest are job openings that will not be filled. one man feels the short notice. the notification going out next week, the short notice flies in the face of the city's mission statement to treatment employees with dignity and respect. >> we are seeing none of that today. tonight, those words are not worth the paper they are written on. >> reporter: also facing cuts bunt for the oakland zoo three
