tonight, we are 50 years of the san francisco manila sister cities. there's a bridge that connects the thrill of the orient to the city by the bay. it is a bridge of ambassadors, one made of people whose roots and hearts and the pacific ocean. in april 1961, the city of seven cisco formally and stated a committee under the office of the mayor to become the preeminent cultural and economic [inaudible] between san francisco and manila, developing a system that promote closer ties between the cities. this year, the san francisco manila sister city committee represents -- celebrates its 50 year, marking five decades of service to our people. the san francisco bay area filipino american community salutes this milestone, a legacy of goodwill and true filipino american pride. >> representing the san francisco manila sister city committee, are defective chairman -- our de facto chairman. she donated it to the city of san francisco and had a specification, i'm giving it to the city that will be used forever for the enjoyment forever of the people of the city of san francisco. it has ever since. every summer the stern grove association in san francisco rec and parks put on 10 free concerts. usually people come out at 10 in the morning it's a family affair. everybody is on the lawn with picnics and it's free. anybody can come out. it's a great way to spend a sunday. >> goes to 1-2 in the afternoon and runs until 5. [music]. thanks to the stern grove association they renovated the concert meadow. it used to be a rolling grafsy area. put in a new stage and stage building. they put in terraces. we get from 8,000 to 12,000 people. and the meadow next to the concert meadow is full of people even though they can't see the music they hear it. i walked into the meadow several times and they don't even care. we do have literally events going on day and night. the concert association has kids days during the week. the performers come out for hundred 200 kids. now, the truckadero truc

here in san francisco, we once again showed that we are a city that knows how. we brought everyone to the table. be put in the long hours. we had tough negotiations and reduced the pension reform measure with business, government, and labor standing side by side. we did it in a way that reflected all of our hard- working city employees. where else have you seen that across the country? while we are on the subject, let's take a moment to remember [unintelligible] [applause] war and was at the center of reform, as he was with so many great causes. -- warren was at the center of reform, as he was been so many great causes. we will always remember your measurable contribution. we miss you. pension reform reminded us that we can solve the problems, if we just set aside small differences and focus on but we agree on, roll up our sleeves and get it done. that is the spirit of innovation that we must embrace to meet the challenges of today and down the road. let me tell you where a little innovation can go a long way. in your city government. in 2011 we saw the power of

we have a wonderful city of san francisco. i know that we pride ourselves in being an international city. begins with celebrating all the diverse cultures and making sure everyone is recognized, that we have our education institutions reflect that, our cities, official events, reflected that but i know i have benefited greatly, not only as an attorney, but as someone who has worked in the city to have worked with so many leaders of the arab-american community. the business leaders have done very well here. knowing, also, the challenges that you face -- i also know there are so many examples of arab-american leadership in the technology world. just look at silicon valley and see how successful arab- americans have been. we are now recruiting those very companies to come to san francisco to make sure that we work with you for job creation. i am also very excited about so many small-business owners who are of arab-american descent. you have done so well in working in all of our different neighborhoods. i want to continue working

in this up until now, and his promotion is so reserved and will will serve the city of san francisco. i am so excited to be able to work in our city, where we think there is the most innovation. our fellowship program takes start of culture and puts it inside city government. we help cities write apps, we help them understand how start- ups were, we use the lean start a methodology, and we helped change the culture within city government. what we are doing now, enabled by s.f. citi, are some new platforms. so many people applied to be part of code for america. it if you have ever wondered whether the tech industry cares about government, i can tell you i see it every day. we had 525 people apply for 25 slots. and that is applying for the opportunity to work for a small stipend, move here, and work under challenging conditions. beyond that, there are hundreds of thousands of people who want to do this in their spare time. we are building a platform that would allow the city of san francisco to put out its needs and have people code on projects to make apps for citizens. that is, the c

i moved to san francisco 15 years ago for all the reasons that we all love our city. our cable cars. our hills. the diversity of our neighborhoods. and have loved every minute of being here. >> like many of you here, i did not actually grow up in san francisco. i grew up in another part of the country that was not quite as tolerant or quite as diverse. san francisco drew me, as i think it through all of us, because we live in a very special place. i just want to say on behalf of the board of supervisors -- we have a special responsibility and a special leadership role in the world. as we come together, we symbolize all of this date we have in humanity, the faith we have in the fight for civil rights, the faith we have, frankly, as a common family. >> i consider myself someone who shares the progress of value that need san francisco's -- many san franciscans hold dear. >> i do believe that a majority of this board share the same progressive values, and i think there is a danger and an overly narrow definition of what is progressive. we have to remember that being progr
