we've gotten up to 32 at the seattle-tacoma airport. throughout the morning t will finally improve ever so slightly. we think later today temperatures will jump up into the 40s. that will quickly improve the roads and allow the power crews to get things back online. as we say that, heavy rain is on the way once again. this is a very active weather pattern. a storm today and another one for sunday in the west. this is a much warmer scenario than the last one. we're going to expect heavy rains in northern california. the northern sierra is going to deal with heavy rain. higher elevations will get the snow. eventually, once the warm front clears, we will get that warm air into seattle and things will dramatically improve late today. this morning, still be very careful. i know school is cancelled in get rid of the ice on the trees and power lines. a lot of my weather colleagues are, you know, have had a rough go over the last couple days up there. >> it happens. >> it does. it's been one of the toughest places in the country to forecast. >>

the weather channel's jim canner toy is live in seattle now with -- cantore is live in seattle now with the conditions. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, joe. we're talking about getting a season's worth of snow in seattle which is about 5.9 inches on average. all in one day. and that will be enough to shut down the city, first of all. started snow being 30 minutes ago here. it's a general light snow. i'll tell you, you go to the south, into olympia and portland, we've already got 32,000 customers without power down there as a heavy, wet snow is coming down. just above the surface of the city. i mean, it's like 500 feet. they are getting hammered down there. all that is going to be moving this way. of course, slaem's been very prepared. we've been talking about snow since sunday. yesterday, as you see from the pictures, it was to our north. that's where we had most of the snow. that caused all sorts of problems on the roadways. they even had to close snoqualmie pass for a while due to avalanche removal. they'll have to do it again today because all this snow, as you mentioned, in

seattle, you ended up with officially four. the north end of town didn't so so well, only about two. bellingham, only an inch, but they don't get a lot of snow in seattle. you just saw from the pictures driving was interesting to say the least. the cleanup is still going on. some areas got more than that, some areas got up to a foot near the south of tacoma to olympia. interstate i-5 near seattle and portland will be a rough drive. and the storm system hasn't ended. there's another slug of moisture raking all of oregon. the winds aren't quite as strong as yesterday, but we are just socked in with the warmer air mass moving in. a lot of the snow is being washed away in the greater portland area. the higher terrain is still getting significant snow out of this. the rainfall totals over the next 48 hours, very impressive. look at this. the reds here, that's as much as three to four to five inches of rain for the california/oregon coastline. that's why we'll be dealing with the flooding problems. most of the snow will be in the wit

we are watching the heavy snow, but not in seattle. oops. forecast there, kids will be disappointed. yesterday, they were thinking maybe 8 to 12 inches, that forecast has been lowered probably down to maybe 2 to 4 inches for downtown seattle. so i know the schools are already closed, the flights are already canceled. it is too late now. heavy snow stayed to your south. from tacoma southward to olympia and portland, snow with sleet mixed in over the last couple of hours. those are the areas that will get the highest totals. the mountains and ski resorts end up with feet of snow out of this, the headline grabber was downtown seattle getting the epic storm. now it doesn't look -- for them, it is more of a typical winter event. in the mountains, it is a very impressive snow event. you see the snow total cut down from bellingham all the way down to seattle. we're still going to get a huge snow event as we go throughout the next two days moving through the inner mountain west. boise to the mountains outside of boise getting nailed. great ski areas
