but, of course, lee is -- lee does well in the overlining campaign. what's interesting he's doing exactly what he doesn't want to do and then the interesting question then becomes, you know, is he just personality-wise unsuited to fighting that? also, gallagher makes this point, let me point this out too. lee fights a masterful if delaying action in the overlying campaign. johnston, if weigley is right, but what happens at the end of all these things? >> you still lose. >> you still lose, why, you're pushed back and what happens? what kind of operation occurs that plays to all the federal advantages? >> a siege. >> a siege, all right. and lee says that very early on. he says this very early on. if this becomes a siege, we're done, all right, because and he says this as early as the seven days because if mcclelland can bring up his heavy artillery, all the northern logistics and material is just gradually going to overwhelm the confederacy and therefore siege -- what happens after a siege? what happens after things like donaldson, henry, vicksburg? you

russell weigley criticizes lee. but what good things does he say about lee? [ inaudible ] what do you mean by that? >> very aggressive. typical west point-ish general. >> okay. all right. so everyone agrees that lee's sort of positive traits, aggressiveness. so what are some examples of that being a good thing? >> crossing the river instead of, like, sitting back to face it, he moved forward and attacked or moved on and culled his bluff, forcing -- >> all right. and what happens? who wins? is he successful? all right, because aggressiveness obviously can be a negative aspect, right? so lee is successfully aggressive, all right, so that would be the seven days, the example you give there. what is usually we think of his best, most important battle? second bull run, all right. what else? tessville. these are two great victories so everyone -- this idea -- remember, we talked about strategy, operations, tactics, all right? so everyone at the operational level usually acknowledges -- very rarely will any historian say lee is not a good campaign general. all right

lee. mr. lee was the dialysis patient and he's probably in his 80's and every time we would drive up to buchanan street, the hospital, mr. lee would say, "good job, fine driver, number one driver" and he would go like this [thumbs up gesture]. and then as brian would be helping him off the van, mr. lee, i heard him so often say, "brian, if anybody gives you any trouble you send them to me and i'll take care of them." and here great big old brian would say, "henry, you're the first one i would try to get help from." and he says, "the second one is elsa." [laugh] so we knew that we were being relied on by brian. a few weeks back, mrs. lee called brian early in the morning to tell him not to bother picking them up because they were already at the hospital. mr. lee was ill and she had taken him to the er. the next day or so, brian, on his lunchtime, found out that mr. lee had been admitted to the hospital and he went up to mr. lee's room and just stuck his head in just to say hello. and the minute

lee is seen as not. it's a result -- you said it. the lee mystique. i think that has been -- the lee mystique has taken a beating among a lot of historians in the last decade. starting with tom connelly and then others. but whether picket's charge will ever be downgraded to bullheaded stupidity and grant's assault elevated to valor and courage, i wouldn't hold your breath for that to happen. it may happen some day. last question? anybody else? yes. >> the theme of the civil war this year is after gettysburg. there's been much discussion based on brown's thesis of a book he's coming out with next year that has two positions. one that virtually immediate had no chance at being able to cut off lee before he made it to the potomac. and the other that in a sense the gettysburg campaign is successfully -- able to gather so many supplies that what he takes with him over the river sustains the army of northern virginia for months or even into the next year. i was wondering of your impressions on those. >> i haven't heard kent speak on this and haven't read th

i really want to welcome the san francisco mayor ed lee. it is difficult for me to call him mayor lee because i have always known him as ed. you are going to get to know him really well. the 43rd mayor of san francisco was born in seattle, went to college in maine, this tiny college out there. he decided to come back and get his law degree from uc-berkeley, and then was appointed by art agnos in government in 1979. he became the director of the human rights commission under willie brown. he became the director of public works. 2005 city administrator, and then the fateful day in january 2011 when the board of supervisors could not decide on anybody and decided that family was not going to be a threat to their future political aspirations. [laughter] he got more than six votes, six more than anyone else. and he became the interim mayor. he did an amazing job. he is outspoken, both feet on the ground, a person you can trust, a person who is very honest, and based upon his experience, knows how to get the job done. i believe he is the best pla

the mayor ed lee suspended mirkarimi in march without pay. he is now trying to remove him permanently. this is coming in fits and starts. this week was the most news we had in a while. mirkarimi's wife, eliana lopez, an actress from venezuela, had been in venezuela with her young son since march. she came back to the ethics commission to testify on behalf of her husband saying he never should have been prosecuted. we must say he also has pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor false imprisonment of his wife. that story was december 31st when he reached and grabbed her arm during an argument and it bruised. that led to the misconduct and criminal conviction. >> belva: where does it stand now? >> there are a couple of moves. the ethics commission will make a recommendation to the board of supervisors. mirkarimi once served on the board of supervisors. they will say if the charges should be upheld. if that happens, you need nine votes out of 11. it has only been done once successfully in the history of san francisco. if mirkarimi is removed f

i would like to say thanks to mayor lee. we also -- always believed san francisco is an important port and trade and cultural center in the western part of the united states. it has a long history of business and cultural exchange with china. as i come to san francisco this time, i have some new feelings. i have been to san francisco many times but no time like this time that makes me more convinced that both sides share a stronger desire for corp. and no time like this time that i sense -- for cooperation. there are nmany opportunities in front of us, especially in the field of infrastructure. as i said this time, i have a delegation of 100 people coming from 40 companies. many of them in fact specialize in infrastructure field. the closely followed -- they have been closely following the projects in city developments, in airports and seaports renovations, and real-estate, and high-speed railways. some have already had the experience in engineering design, construction, and management in the united states. so i hope that yo

david lee miller watched the story from the beginning. he is live in new york city with a look at this right now. david lee, what is it? >> reporter: bill, it is an enormous report. take a look at the size of it. it is hundreds and hundreds of pages. the report's authors say they examined more than 3 1/2 million e-mails. they interviewed more than 400 people. at the end of the day this is a, very damning report for penn state and specifically coach joe paterno. the report cites paterno specifically and it says that he influenced others at the school not to report an incident of alleged abuse. i'm going to read from the report now or the preamble to the report. let's bring up a full screen graphic. it says, and i quote, our most saddening and sobering finding is the total disorder regard for the safety and welfare of sandusky's child victims by most senior leaders at enpenn state. most powerful men at penn state failed to take steps
