it was stated by mitt romney in 2002. it was sort of a lost footnote, but when romney ran for governor in 2002, there was some question whether he was el jabl to hold the aus, because he had been living and working in utah for a few years. when he testified, one of the defenses he used was that he had taken a leave of absence from bain capital and intended to return after the olympics. those are his words, that's not an interpretation. so obviously that didn't end up being the case. he never went back to bane. he ended up running for governor instead. but as late as 2002, he was asserting this was a leave of absence and he had plans to come back. >> was he filing massachusetts tax returns when he was running the olympics? >> he was filing out of utah at the time. that was one of the reasons why there was some dispute whether he should be allowed to run for governor in massachusetts in the first place. i believe the calculation was he had saved $54,000 by filing in utah rather than massachusetts. he agreed to repay that su

mitt romney is now in no position. he made the decision he wants to deny having anything to do with bain capital in 200, 2001, 2002 rather than as some republicans have argued say, look stands up for bain. >> you were in charge. stand up for it and deny bain was involved in outsourcing, whatever it is you want to claim, even though the record shows that no, it was. at least then you create in the political world a dynamic of the president's campaign says one thing. romney's campaign says another. the other is sort of left with what do we believe? by mitt romney wanting to deny at bain, that argument about what bain did is off of the table. now, it's sort of conventional wisdom reaffirmed because mitt romney sees a stink factor doesn't want to be associated with bain from 2000 to 2002. now, it's an accepted fact that bain boast bought companies and scaled them down or moved the jobs overseas. now, the only question was: was mitt romney involved or not? he is trying to hide on this island by saying, no, i was riding the

mitt romney invested in two different ways. through is subsidiary of bain capital and through an offshore company. here's the map. from 1998 until 1999 romney's share in global tech ranged from 6% to 10%, according to mother jones. so his money, his investment, was flowing to hong kong company global tech. global tech manufactured household appliances in china. and there's a reason we show american jobs flowing to china. see, the company relied on outsourcing by american companies to fuel its business. here's what global tech's ceo said back in 1998. although it appears that customers such as sunbeam are not outsourcing their manufacturing as quickly as we had anticipated, we still believe that the long-term trend toward outsourcing will continue. the company's success relied on american companies' desire to outsource, and mitt romney, well, he was happy to invest his money. bear in mind, this is just a small part of mitt romney's outsourcing and offshoring problem. romney says he will create american jobs. >> if i'm president,

to you had, npr reports on the connection between mitt romney and a notorious tax shelter user mitt romney served as director of marriott international, the hotel company founded by willard marriott who willard m. romney was actually named after. kleinbard who work odd for the joint committee on taxation said marriott was one of those companies that loved to buy tax shelters. bloomberg reported this year on one marriott tax shelter, the internal revenue service challenged the shelter and marriott lost in court. judges called the shelter fictitious, and a scheme. and the company was forced to pay $29 million. kleinbard notes that when the shelter was adopted, mitt romney was the chairman of marriott's audit committee. that means mitt romney had oversight over that tax shelter for marriott. and a new twist emerged today in the dispute over when mitt romney left bain capital. today, buzz feeds andrew kaczynski points out that during a primary debate, mitt romney said this -- >> i think people understand that i'm a man of steadiness and consistency. i worked at one company, bain for 25 years.

and mitt romney lost to sarah palin. john mccain denouncing today what he called a stupid question about that today. saying the reason he decided not to pick mr. romney for vice president after he vetted him for the job was because, quote, we thought sarah palin was the better candidate. he meant this as a sign of support for mr. romney, but it did not come out that way. the main reason mitt romney cannot defend his decision this year to not release his tax returns based on what john mccain did last time around is because when mitt romney was trying to get john mccain to pick him as the vice presidential nominee, mr. romney gave to john mccain 23 years of his own tax returns. 23 years. mr. romney felt okay disclosing that much about himself in order to try to get the job of vice president. but now that he wants the job of president, not so much. >> i have already put out one year of tax returns. we'll put out the next year of tax returns as soon as the accountants have that ready, and that's what we're going to put out.
