. >>> up next on a second look, north to alaska. from the brave men and women who connect the remote towns by air to the hardy souls, the men running the i dit rod race, and a man who shot a bear in his backyard. these stories and more, all straight ahead on a second look. >>> good evening. i'm julie haener. this is a second look. this year marks the 100th anniversary as alaska being organized as a territory of the united states, 35 years after the united states purchased alaska from russia for $7.2 million. the equivalent of about 120 million today. when alaska became a state in 1959, it was the largest in the union in terms of area. vast stretches of alaska are undeveloped and pristine. no roads. no towns. and to get to one place to another, most often means one thing. flying. in 1984, ktvu's george watson brought us this report on the pilots who braved the endless skies and unforgiving terrain of alaska every day. >>> there are virtually no roads to anywhere around here. in fact, there aren't that many anywhere in alaska there. a

we flew out of core dovea, alaska -- cordova, alaska, went to kayak island. kayak sticks out from the coastline at an angle that allows it to collect an incredible amount of marine debris on just an average year. so the reason to go to kayak was to see what else might be unusual other than the typical marine debris, the nets, the ropes, the buoys. we saw -- we saw real evidence of what was coming our way from the tsunami. we saw colored buoys, large styrofoam blocks. there was a large container that had washed up very recently. we've got a picture here from noaa that shows some of what we saw washed up there on kayak. these are all the plastic buoys here, the black ones we were told are what you see more of coming out of japan. now, have we been clearly able to identify that these came from japan or this was -- this was the usual marine debris? noaa is working to sort all of that out. but that gives you somewhat of an idea of some of what we saw out there on kayak island. now, many saw pictures of -- of this huge dock that recently arrived on the coastline in

in the next 48 hours we're going to track a rather unusual system developing out in the system of alaska. that's going to drop down and we're not looking at too much major cold air with this. nothing in the way of rainfall. but this will help to increase winds up against the coastline. so that will get our fog machine going as we go throughout tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. that will keep 50s and 60s at the coastline and back for the interior valleys, not any kind of major heat. we'll see the numbers go up into tuesday and wednesday. tropical update, tropical storm isaac, you're traveling this way, you have family out here, this is stealing all of the headlines and out here in the gulf, what you're noting, in the past 24 hours, this is starting to fully operate almost like a category 1 hurricane. inflow and outflow boundaries are going pretty good. that we think over the next 24 hours will enable this to strengthen. winds at 75 miles per hour. as we head throughout tomorrow afternoon, a category 1 just before landfall. we may see this jump up to category 2 status early wednesday morni
