nbc bay area's christie smith is live at uc, berkeley, now. she joins was these new details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. lieutenants here at uc, berkeley, tells me overnight at least four people needed medical attention because of alcohol poisoning and certainly drinking and college are not that unusual together, it looks like some students are off to a rough and early start. >> we just heard a loud screeching sound and, like, a crash, and we also felt the building shake. >> reporter: a driver lost control overnight, hitting a gaes meter at pull nam hall causing a gas leak and evacuation for hundreds of students in their dorm. >> we ran to see what was going on. we heard people screaming and yelling and it was really crazy. >> reporter: everyone was okay, but uc police say the 22-year-old driver believe to be a student was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. officers say they've been busy. already a number of calls for students drinking so much they needed medical attention. >> probably a little higher than we would like to see and

ago, hundreds of uc berkeley berke -- berkeley students evacuated the building because of a gas leak. alex savidge is out there now. what's happening, alex? >> reporter: the car barreled into the ground floor of the building there early this morning and sheared off this gas line. the leak prompted the evacuation of more than 200 students from putnam hall, a high-rise hall a couple of blocks away from the campus. this happened at 2:45 this morning. gas was leaking into the air and pg&e crews came this to turn off the line. in the meantime, students had to be kept out of the dorm for more than an hour until the leak could be capped. a uc berkeley sergeant says university staff members say the fire alarms were alerted -- were turned on to alert the students. >> the fire alarms went off. people got out of bed. were freaking out. didn't nope what was going on. and people started returning out of the emergency exit -- didn't know what was going on. and people started running out of the emergency exit and went downstairs. >> reporter: at last check, uc berkeley police say the driver of the
